VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital: Reviews
Negative experience: This is the WORST place to take your pet in need of care. I did not originally make a review as I was so traumatized from my previous experience. As I just had another unfortunate experience here I feel like warning people .. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE IF IT IS IN A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION - THEY WILL ENCOURAGE YOU TO PUT IT DOWN Two year ago on Feb 7th I brought my dog in as he collapsed. They let me know that they seen he was bleeding internally but couldn’t save him as the vet that specializes in these situations was not in & could NOT be called in. The vet that was on told me he would need 10k up front just to open my dog up and TRY to find where the blood was coming from but my dog would most likely die on the table as this wasn’t his specialty. And they told me they would NOT call in the vet that can do such a procedure which is crazy to me as this is an EMERGENCY VET. imagine going to the hospital because you’re bleeding out and they don’t call in a surgeon to help you. They then pressured me into putting down my dog when they couldn’t even tell me for sure what happened to him. (He was running around at the beach and then laid down and wouldn’t get up). Not only this but i bought a PAW PRINT from them as I was hoping to get my dogs real paw stamped to keep forever any they gave me the most artificially made fake dog print i have ever seen which looks nothing like my dogs paw. This was the WORST experience of my life. Fast forward to this weekend. My bunny needed urgent care as she was experiencing dystocia. The vet that was on this night was a female so i knew it was not the same vet. They assured me they could help. I got into the clinic with my bunny around 12am. They mentioned wanting to try to pull the baby out. I told them that my exotic vet said to NEVER pull the baby out. If there is complications, get an emergency C-section. They rolled their eyes at me and after her being in for 6 hours - they indeed did try to pull the baby out - they RUPTURED my bunnies uterus and decapitated the baby bunny that was coming out. My bunny then was loosing a-lot of blood and they informed me they couldn’t do surgery & the most ‘humane option would be to put her down’. This was NOT an option for me. The vet did not seem to care about my bunny bleeding so much and the techs kept trying to pet my bunny even after i told them she was scared and uncomfortable. She was showing very obvious signs of irritation with the techs. I then got another vet clinic to pick her up from the VCA where they preformed surgery & were able to help save my bunny. The VCA billed me over 1000$ to not save my dog & give me a botched foot print The VCA tried to bill me 900$ for almost killing my bunny until I mentioned that was crazy and they then billed me 660$ which is still ridiculous as you promised to HELP ME and instead you RUPTURED my bunnies UTERUS and then ‘couldn’t do anything’ about it. They also billed me for medication to go home with that i didn’t want or need as my bunny was clearly being transferred for surgery and her medication was different / stronger from the actual surgeon who cared enough to save her life. DO NOT EVER GO HERE. DRIVE THE EXTRA DISTANCE AND GO ANYWHERE ELSE
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience Alicia. We truly appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention. A member of our leadership team would be happy to talk with you. Please don't hesitate to reach out and call 250 475 2495, if you are comfortable and wish to discuss further.
Negative experience: (And I thought lawyers were expensive.) Astronomical prices for procedures that other comparable vet clinics charge much less for. This and one instance of what I consider to be unfortunate conduct on the part of an oncologist who works for Central Vet who diagnosed my cat’s cancer (which Central Vet charged me $7450, for a CT scan, which my cat suffered a bad reaction to), where a consultation appointment with my local vet was abruptly cancelled with less than an hour’s notice. Based on my experience with Central Vet I believe profit, above all else, is the supreme focus of this business & based on how they treated me I would never use this clinic again and would not recommend Central Vet to anyone. My closing comment to Central Vet: claiming ‘location’ as a reason for the prices charged, after researching this further, I don’t believe is justifiable.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Steve. We understand how challenging this situation must have been for you, and we truly appreciate your feedback. If you’d like to discuss your concerns further, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly via phone, we’d be happy to connect you with management should you wish to discuss with the leadership team.
Fantastic experience: Our dog was attacked by wolves on January 24th. Wylie was brought into the emergency and taken care right away.We were very impressed with all her care and she's made an excellent recovery. I'd like to thank the surgeon whom I'm sorry but can't remember her name. I did speak to her on the phone but to tell you the truth I was in shock for days. The first vet we saw was Dr Spencer she was kind and informative. Thanks to Dr.Boller,so kind and practical with his practice. A huge thanks to Dr.Seguin. Your kennel -side manner is impeccable and you are kind and personal. You gave me techniques to help Wylie to make her better and it worked without having to go back in for more surgery. It was very expensive, but some of the costs were altered which made it easier. Thanks to all the other staff. Vet tech Melissa and Megan.I think!!? The office staff were great and informative. I can't remember them all but Gabriel and her partner that night with the short black, sorry didn't catch your name. Theresa,so sweet. Also the girl with the beautiful red hair....so sorry I can't even guess, maybe Stacey?? It's been quite a couple of weeks. Thanks so much for helping our girl, she's back to her poodleyself
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're so relieved to hear that Wylie is recovering well and has returned to her usual self! It’s clear from your kind words that you really appreciated the care she received, and we’re grateful for the trust you placed in our team. We’ll make sure to pass along your thanks to all the staff you mentioned. Wishing Wylie continued health and happiness! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything. ❤️
Fantastic experience: Brought our large breed, reactive, rescue dog in for emergency treatment. The staff were kind, gentle, transparent, and everything was fairly priced in my opinion. They kept my partner and I looped in throughout each step of the process and were extremely kind to my special needs pet (who does not trust / play nice with new people, especially when sick and scared!). They have kindly answered my many questions (free of charge) over the phone about follow up care and recommendations over a month after our visit. As a health care provider myself, and a lifelong rescue dog owner, I am extremely thankful and pleased with the care received. The VCA is highly competent, aren’t trying to make money off of people, and genuinely care about the animals and nervous pet parents in their care. I hope we never have to come back, but if we do, I know my pet will be cared for and in good hands. Thank you so much for all you do.
Thank you so much for your kind words Molly! We're thrilled to hear that your experience with us was positive and that we could provide the care and support both you and your dog needed. We know how important it is to feel confident in the care your pet is receiving, and we're grateful to have earned your trust. If you ever need us again, we'll be here to help. Wishing you and your rescue pup all the best!
Negative experience: I waited more than six months to write this because I do not leave negative reviews lightly. I only share this because other pet owners deserve to know what we experienced. Our 11-year-old Boston Terrier was referred to VCA Oncology by his cardiologist in April 2025 for a heart-based tumor, a chemodectoma that had been diagnosed three years earlier. From start to finish, our dog’s care at VCA Oncology was deeply disappointing and heartbreaking. A CT scan was performed to determine whether he was a candidate for stereotactic radiation therapy and to assess margins and tumor advancement. Due to a mishap and the treating doctor being ill, the initial results were not reviewed in time and we were essentially told we needed to put our dog through another CT scan for up-to-date results. The risks of additional anesthesia and radiation, plus the trip from Vancouver to Victoria, were required because of their mistake. There should have been another qualified clinician available to review and interpret the imaging when the primary doctor was unavailable. I guess they only have one radiation oncologist on the team. We went ahead with the additional CT scan. We received a phone call about the results but the discussion felt casual and lacking in compassion. There was no in-depth explanation about how far advanced the tumor was or that it was infiltrating his atrium. Given his age and the tumor advancement, we should have been thoughtfully and thoroughly advised that even inflammation alone could tip him over the edge and that this approach was palliative, not likely to shrink the tumor. We should have been clearly told that, given his age, the risks were significant and the treatment might not be worth the distress. Instead we were encouraged to try it and told the side effects and risk were minimal. This was a very expensive treatment, over $20,000, and we were not given the full, balanced information required to make an informed choice. If Dr. Hammond and the team truly cared for their patients and their owners, they would know when to turn cases down and they would refuse interventions when the risk versus reward is not in the animal’s best interest. They failed to protect our dog from unnecessary suffering. One month after treatment our beloved dog passed away. The inflammation and the advanced disease progression caused a rapid and devastating decline. After he passed we discussed the case with his cardiologist, who agreed this was not the right step given how advanced the condition was. She had referred us so we could make an informed decision, but the information provided was inadequate and felt misleading. To top it off, we never even met the oncologist in person. Please beware, do your research, ask for every detail and a copy of the scan, and insist on an in-person consultation with the treating oncologist. We feel we were swindled for money and that our dog endured unnecessary suffering.
Hi Lauren, thank you for sharing your experience, and we’re deeply sorry to hear about the challenges you faced with your dog's care. We understand how difficult it is to go through such a heartbreaking situation. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns further with you. Please feel free to reach out to the hospital if you're comfortable, and a member of the leadership team will do everything we can to address any questions or feedback you may have.
Fantastic experience: Our dog got diagnosed with seizures and we got a referral to Dr. Zwueste, since meeting her she has been so much help for our pup. She is very caring and I am so happy with how helpful she has been. I am beyond amazed with the service that this vet has given us. I have highly recommend them to all my friends and family if they ever need to go to an emergency vet for anything pet related. The neurology team has went above and beyond to help our dog and I am forever grateful for them. Thank you for the support you have given us and our dog throughout this difficult journey Dr. Zwueste. You are truly an amazing human that truly cares about her patients and animal patients I couldn’t ask for shredder to be in better hands.
Thank you so much for your kind words, C! We're thrilled to hear that Dr. Zwueste and our neurology team have been able to help Shredder. Your trust means the world to us, and we're grateful for the opportunity to support you both. Wishing Shredder all the best!
Fantastic experience: The medical oncology team is wonderful. Couldn’t be more grateful
Thank you so much for your kind words, and pictures of Spooky, Alexa! We wish you both the best, and will pass along the message to the team ❤️
Fantastic experience: Excellent care. Thank you to the staff here, especially to the tech who oversaw my dog in between intake and doctor care. The tech was the best handler of a nervous dog that I’ve ever seen at a vet clinic. She checked in us frequently despite a very busy and late night. Grateful to the clinic - and my dog is healing well!
Thank you M, for your kind feedback, hoping your pup is feeling better!
Fantastic experience: They really care about their patients and the people who bring them in, thank you very much for your care
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback Alberta! We're glad to have provided a good experience for you.
Fantastic experience: Abby was wonderful fixing my pup’s bleeding nail last night. The whole team is friendly and genuinely caring. Highly recommend!
Thank you for your kind words José! We're happy to hear your feedback, and glad you had a good experience with us.
Fantastic experience: First time visiting tonight because I had to take my parrotlet in for an incident with a blood feather. The women who helped me when I arrived and the veterinarian were all lovely. The veterinarian handled him with extreme care. She cares very much about the animals she helps. Highly recommend for emergency situations with your feathered friends!
Hi Elliana, thank you so much for leaving your feedback! We appreciate the kind words, and glad your parrotlet received great care!
Negative experience: This place is a real mixed bag. Some of the staff, medical and admin, are really excellent and some are hard to tolerate and have trouble staying professional while having to work under pressure. The private quiet room for clients having to have their pet euthanized is well thought out in its design and function, really well done. Complimentary tea and coffee also a nice touch to help cope with the long wait and soothe rattled nerves. Naturally, this is an intense, high energy, stressful place in which staff have to constantly adjust to ever changing priorities and it seems that overall communication is suffering quite a bit as a consequence. Messaging is not consistent and coherent and medical staff are contradicting each other when communicating with clients, thus my trust in their true knowledge and abilities regarding procedures, directions and best treatment options has suffered. Information is not being properly forwarded and client requests are at times not honoured even if they promised they would. Because of the high stress nature of this environment, you at times will be pressured by admin to sign waivers and release forms you did not have time to read properly, discuss with the doctor and fully consider. The doctors seem to quickly and unexpectedly exit consultations and you may find yourself feeling being left hanging and having to deal with an impatient and rude front desk person instead, who is not equipped to address your concerns. Said staff get frustrated and condescending because they just want to file the signed forms already, which is unacceptable in questions around life and death and very damaging and traumatizing to clients. Some front desk staff need to be monitored more closely in regards to their performance and level of professionalism. It’s a place where you have to expect to be exposed to somewhat traumatic treatment, e.g. being rushed, being ignored, being dismissed, at a time you might find yourself being most vulnerable. So brace yourself! One also cannot help and feel this is a highly for profit driven environment, so I am echoing the concerns of some other reviewers. ________ Edit: some interesting information comes to light when one starts digging in the news about Mars Inc !! We have a huge corporately run problem here in our community! ☠️ I encourage anybody to do their in depth research.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us and we’re really sorry to hear parts of your experience were disappointing. Your feedback about communication and consistency is important, and we’re listening.
If you’re open to it, our management team would really value the chance to talk with you directly and learn more. Please feel free to reach out to us at 250 475 2495.
Thank you again for taking the time to share
Fantastic experience: I took my loved one there for end of life and the staff were highly empathetic. The procedure of our visit had many details that were thoughtful and Dr.H was caring and easy to communicate with. Special shout out to the kind red headed woman at the front for her empathy and gentle way of leading us through everything. You both made one of worst days of my life a little less heavy.
Thank you so much for the kind words K. We really appreciate you having taken the time to leave your feedback, and glad we could provide you with the utmost care during your visit.
Negative experience: $1200 to triage and ultimately put down a three pound ferret. It took hours and my intuition is that if they'd acted faster, she could have been saved. They waved the cost of oxygen, so ... thanks for that? VCA / Mars is an aggressively for-profit corporation, maximizing every penny they can squeeze out of pet owners in their moments of need. I can't help but feel shame on the vets & other staff who would choose to work here rather working at existing privately owned clinics or leaving together to start a clinic that balances profitability with patient need, etc.
Hi Paul, we’re very sorry for the loss of your ferret and that your experience with us was difficult. We understand how hard this time can be. If you’d like to talk more about your visit, our management team would appreciate the chance to speak with you. Please feel free to call us at 250 475 2495.
Fantastic experience: I recently took my daughters cat to the VCA CVVH for an early morning emergency visit. They were extremely busy but were kind enough to do a brief assessment and then set up an appointment for me later in the morning at another clinic. Dr J. van der Lay and her staff went above and beyond to make sure that our cat was stable and comfortable enough, before referring us on. I was very appreciative of their kind and professional attitude, and the extremely reasonable visit cost. We are very fortunate to have a facility and staff of this calibre in Victoria.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Gail. We truly appreciate your feedback and are happy to hear that your cat was well taken care of and had a good experience with us.
Fantastic experience: Super recommend! Their are super clear with what’s going on. I really appreciated the phone call updates about my cat. A hit pricy but so worth it for their loving and care. Also pretty fast too for a walk in/ emergency.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Mia. We’re glad to hear you felt informed and cared for during your visit, and that our team could help. We truly appreciate you trusting us during an emergency and taking the time to share your experience.
Fantastic experience: I recently had to bring my pet into the emergency hospital, and I can’t say enough good things about Mackenzie, the assistant who helped us. From the moment we arrived, she was incredibly kind, calm, and professional. She could tell how worried I was and went out of her way to make both me and my pet feel comfortable. Mackenzie was attentive and compassionate. Her gentle manner with my pet showed how much she truly cares about the animals she works with. It made a stressful situation so much easier to handle. I’m so grateful for the care and support Mackenzie provided in a stressful time
Fantastic experience: Dr. Au Yong did my older dogs TPLO. She was very kind and compassionate. She took the time to answer all my questions. The support staff at Central Vic are also amazing! Everyone is friendly, helpful, and caring.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback, Alanna. We really appreciate your kind words, and glad we could provide the service for you and your pup!
Fantastic experience: Very helpful and clear when my dog got sick very suddenly. Was able to call and ask if my dog should come in or not, and get a yes or no based on current symptoms. kind and straightforward when it comes to being honest with whatever situation your pets health is in. Free tea and coffee. Wonderful staff. Thank you
Thank you so much for your kind words, Spencer, we really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. We're so glad our team could help make a stressful situation a little easier.
Negative experience: I would give a one star but that staff was nice, we bring our cat in for something we were concerned about and they have us wait in a room for upwards of 2 hours plus then when we tell them we don't want a urine sample test done they do it anyway, that was completely uncool. I think for now on I will be sticking to my local vet, at least they will honor what we said to have done and not go behind our backs and do a test we didn't authorize. And also giving us a medication for my cat then doesn't tell us the serious side effects.
Hi there, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re so glad to hear our staff treated you kindly, though we’re truly sorry your overall experience fell short.
If you're open to it, we’d really appreciate the chance to speak with you directly. A member of our leadership team would be more than happy to listen and take your concerns on board at 250 475 2495
Fantastic experience: The staff were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and very pleasant to deal with when you're in a bad state of mind and concerned about your fur baby, within 10 minutes the vet tech that took Piggies vitals gave me more information in that time then I have received over many vet visits and I am absolutely grateful for the pleasant attitude and the great treatment of both our pet and us. I hope I don't ever have to go back there but I know that if I do we will be taken care of especially Miss Piggy Smallz Keep up the good work VCA!
Thank you for your review Michelle! We require you to stay in your vehicle during your visit to ensure we are able to contact you via phone or in person at any given moment should any urgent matters arise with your pet. We hope your puppy is doing well and appreciate your patience during a very busy time for the veterinary community!
Negative experience: Be careful, they will profile you. You shouldn't have to show up in a benz to get good vet care. If you need another reason to not go here, VCA is owned by Mars Inc., an American corporation.
Thank you for sharing your feedback Natalija. We're sorry to hear about your experience and truly appreciate you taking the time to let us know. If you'd like, a member of our leadership team would be happy to chat with you about your visit. You can call us at 250 475 2495
Fantastic experience: I have been to this Emergency Veterinary Hospital a few times with a couple family pets and I never thought of giving them a review - maybe because of the sticker shock of the final bill! But I realized today the comfort I had knowing they were open when I needed them and ready to treat my dog as soon as I got there. It isn't easy/cheap to run a 24 hour care clinic (maybe why my regular vet clinic is now closed on Saturdays!). Our vet today was Dr Kippen and she was AWESOME!!! I wish she was our regular vet! She explained why my dog was probably sick (virus going around Victoria) and provided great treatment options. I went home with the medicine and printed copy of the diagnosis, treatment plan and follow-up notes. This is so helpful as it can hard to remember everything that is said in the treatment room as you are stressed out with your fur baby being sick and possibly being up throughout the night with them. The final bill wasn't a shock which was icing on the cake for our 5 star visit today.
Thank you for such a thoughtful review Shelley and recognising our team's efforts. Knowing we've met the expectations we have set means a lot to the team. Hope your pup recovers well at home!
Fantastic experience: I was so pleased with the care my sweet Tim Bit received. ❤️ he has idiopathic cystitis in his bladder. He had a flare up after 12 midnight. I was given all the advise on how to handle a possible treatment for the future. Dr Claudia Villa treated my kitty and I with compassion ❤️..wonderful front desk staff as well..
Thank you so much for leaving your review Shelley. So happy to hear you and Tim Bit received very thorough and compassionate care! Hope he continues to do well with treatment!
Fantastic experience: We have, unfortunately, had to visit emergency vets a few times now with our current and past pups. This was by far the smoothest, fastest, and friendliest pet hospital we have ever been to. Everyone was amazing, treating us and our little Corona with compassion and got us right in! The vet, Dr Gurney (hope that is correct) was probably the first vet our skittish little one was actually not afraid of! Very soft spoken, kind and thorough, the right type of vet you need in these situations. Thank you again :)
Hi Logan, thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us. So glad to hear little Corona had a positive experience with us!
Fantastic experience: Dr. Spencer, the admin staff, and the vet assistant were compassionate, gentle, thoughtful and efficient. Great modern facilities.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback N C. We are pleased to have been able to assist you and to have contributed to a positive experience during your visit.
Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about this emergency vet clinic. The entire staff was compassionate, professional, and incredibly understanding. They treated our pet with genuine care and made sure we felt supported throughout the entire process. What really stood out was how thorough Adam (the veterinarian) was, in explaining everything and how fair and transparent the pricing was—especially during a stressful situation when that kind of honesty really matters. It’s clear that they truly care about both animals and their people. We’re so grateful for the kindness and expertise we received here. Thank you for being there when we needed you the most.
Hello Nadia,
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. We truly appreciate your kind words, and it was our pleasure to be able to assist you during your time of need. We understand that emergency visits can be challenging, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you.
Negative experience: I strongly encourage reading the large number of one star reviews including this one. I echo many of the concerns left by other pet owners - communication is a huge issue, misinformation about charges for procedures, clinical incompetence (you have to hope to receive a seasoned vet) and complete avoidance on addressing complaints/concerns. Take your pet to Waves in Langford and avoid this organization at all costs. *Update - our cat required two emergency surgeries with our vet at Oaklands Veterinary Clinic due to several stones in his bladder and ureter. They did a complete and thorough round of diagnostics to include blood work. If VCA Central Hospital had done a simple X-ray this would have been caught immediately. None of this was even offered.
Hi, We’re truly sorry that your experience left you feeling this way. Your concerns are valid, and we appreciate you taking the time to share them. The offer to speak with management still stands, and if or when you feel ready, we’d welcome the opportunity to connect and support you however we can.
Fantastic experience: I love my cat. She is a 4 year old Burmese female . I got up and she was breathing oddly. I woke up and ran out the door. At the hospital a calm young woman said” 4 to 6 hour wait”. Then she looked at Merritt. It took less than 6 minutes to check her in and in the back and in an oxygen chamber. It’s horrible expensive to have skilled people, 24 hr operation and all kinds of equipment. And I was thrilled to pay. I don’t know if she will live but they are doing everything they can. Oh and they clearly love animals as almost everyone there spoke of what a sweetheart Merritt is. I’m rattled but hopeful
Hello Chris, thank you very much for taking the time to share your review. We sincerely hope Merritt continues to recover comfortably at home. We're glad to hear you had a positive experience with us, and we truly appreciate your kind words. She’s a lovely girl and very fortunate to have you.
Positive experience: Appreciative of this emergency care centre when one's pet is injured.
Thank you so much, Jackie, for taking the time to share your feedback. We hope your pup is doing well and recovering comfortably at home!
Positive experience: I’m incredibly grateful to VCA for giving Cosmo and me a safe, compassionate space to say goodbye. Though he was fear-aggressive and often wary of new people, the staff approached him with patience, kindness, and deep respect. They never rushed us and treated him with the dignity he deserved. They also allowed friends to come and say goodbye, which meant the world to me. It brought so much comfort to have that support and to surround Cosmo with love in his final moments. Thank you for holding space for all of us with such tenderness and care.
Hi K, thank you very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review. We truly appreciate the opportunity to serve each patient's individual needs, and we’re grateful we could be there for you and Cosmo during this time. It was our pleasure to ensure both of you received the care and attention you deserved during your visit
Fantastic experience: The staff are amazing, incredibly professional but also very kind and comforting. I hope I don’t need emergency care for my dog Huckleberry again anytime soon but I know if I do, she will be in great hands. Absolutely recommend this space if anyone is ever in need of emergency care for their pets.
Hi Sylvie, thank you very much for taking the time to share your review. We truly appreciate your kind words and are delighted to know that you had a positive experience and felt well cared for during your visit with Huckleberry.
Fantastic experience: My best friend is alive and well. All thanks to the lovely vet who treated her with haste in urgent times and the reception staff that were so accommodating and kind. I felt my concerns and parameters were heard and we were treated with such compassion. Thank you guys a million times over!
Hi Valerie, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your review. We truly appreciate your kind words and are delighted to hear that you received prompt and caring support.
Fantastic experience: The staff at VCA were so kind and accommodating during our time there. I am so thankful for their services and support when my dog was unwell. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the vet who treated my dog, but the tech, Brianna was lovely. Thank you VCA :)
Thank you for such a thoughtful review Jenelle! So Happy we could provide a positive experience for you and your pup!
Fantastic experience: This clinic helped us fill an emergency prescription that nowhere else was able to fill, on very short notice. They are amazing and have probably saved my dog. I can’t give them enough praise, thank you endlessly to the wonderful staff and doctors here who truly care!
Hi Charlotte, thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful review. We are genuinely delighted to have been able to assist you and your pup during what we understand can be a stressful situation.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic service here with our three year old Shin Tzu who had ingested some tennis ball fluff and we were concerned. It's a clean, lovely hospital and they were very good to us. We would highly recommend them.
Hi Suzanne, I'm delighted to learn about your positive experience with us, and I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback!
Fantastic experience: Our senior boxer went for an unexpected ‘sleepover’ at VCA this weekend. All of the staff we encountered were so kind and compassionate during this scary time for us. They were clear with their communication regarding treatment, costs and recommendations and kept us up to date with Ruby’s progress. We were relieved to know that she got lots of love when we couldn’t be there to give it to her.
Hi Jesse, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We're truly pleased to hear that we could offer your family the care you needed. Wishing Ruby a smooth and continued recovery at home!
Negative experience: Terrible experience. Our dog received a hack job surgery. The tech wanted to make out with our dog for ten minutes while he was bleeding from a gash. The emotionless vet asked bluntly “do you want us to revive him if his heart stops”. We had to repeat every question about our dogs medical history. It was overly expensive. The coffee machine delivered.
Hi Levi, we sincerely apologize for any dissatisfaction you experienced during your recent visit with us. We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. If you would like to discuss your experience further, a member of our management team would be more than happy to speak with you. If you would like to talk to someone, you can reach us at 250 475 2495
Fantastic experience: We were referred to the oncology department here for surgical removal of a cancerous tumour in a complex location. Reading some of the reviews made me anxious about the referral, but once the staff got in touch we felt very informed and supported throughout the entire process. The surgery went perfectly and the staff were available to us throughout recovery. Overall cost was under but close to what was estimated, which we were satisfied with. I don’t appreciate VCA taking over independent clinics, but the oncology staff here are doing an excellent job in our experience.
Hi Jess, we sincerely appreciate you taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. We're really pleased to hear that everything with the oncology department went well, and we hope your pet is on the road to a smooth recovery.
Fantastic experience: We had a wonderful experience at VCA yesterday when we brought our puppy in for a check-up. From the moment we arrived, Karen at the front desk was incredibly friendly and helpful—she even assisted us in contacting our insurance company, which made the process much smoother. Meredith, the vet assistant, was so kind and empathetic. She took the time to collect the exam samples gently and reassured us when she noticed how nervous we were. Her compassion made a big difference. Dr. Violette was fantastic! She thoroughly checked our puppy, explained everything in detail, and made sure we felt confident about caring for her at home. We truly appreciate the time and care she provided. We are so grateful to the entire team for their professionalism, kindness, and dedication. Highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for emergency veterinary care!
Hi Bruna, thank you for taking the time to leave such a kind review. Happy we could be of service for you and your pup, and glad you had a positive experience!
Negative experience: Horrible unprofessional place! While my dog was being admitted the Vet treating another dog in exam room accidentally let the dog out and it attacked my dog in the waiting room. Afterwards we were taken to an exam room where we waited for 30 minutes. Vet diagnosed problem. Left me in the room while my dog still in pain for another 20 minutes. Then a 12 year old vet technician comes in and tries unsuccessfully to administer a needle. After the third unsuccessful attempt I finally left, deciding to wait another 3 hours till my dogs vet clinic opened. In the future if my dog needs emergency care I'll drive another 20 minutes to Waves in Langford.
Negative experience: I picked up my dog yesterday the cost was 400$ more than what they had quoted. I was able to pay all but 143$ of the bill which was over 3400$. Only for observation and a couple medications. I told them I would pay the remainder today which I fully intended to do. However before I got a chance they spoke to the office they referred me to Evergreen and told them I hadn’t paid my bill. For this reason they refused to go forward with my dogs surgery tomorrow and my dog is on the verge of death and needs the surgery immediately. I also don’t like that when I initially went in they told me 4x to put my dog down immediately when there was an alternative. I’m not sure why they are so extremely unprofessional and not empathetic. Al they care about us money not your pet
Fantastic experience: Great quality of medicine! My dog has been here twice for emergencies and she had excellent care both times. Dr. van der Lee and Violette were both very knowledgable and helpful.
Thank you so much for reaching out to us Kirsten. We're delighted to hear that you and your pet had a positive visit!
Fantastic experience: Came here after no other vet could help my cat. He gets very anxious at the vet and usually would freeze up. This last time however he started being very reactive with the vets I saw. Nobody else was able to help him because of this. I was told to bring him here, and it was the easiest, most stress free experience I’ve had. All the staff I encountered were extremely kind and patient, including the doctor who was helping him. They even trimmed his nails for me without me having to ask! I can’t say enough how thankful I am to the team at this place for helping us out when I didn’t know where to turn. Obviously slightly more expensive than other vets I’ve been to, but this is an emergency place so to me that makes sense. Would 100% recommend, especially if you have a reactive cat who needs sedation. Thanks again :)
Hi Unity, We are delighted to hear that you had a positive experience with us. Our commitment is to provide the highest level of care tailored to the unique needs of each of our patients. It brings us joy to know that we were able to work together to create a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your kitty.
Negative experience: if i could give this scam of an establishment zero stars i would. it has taken me months to be able to write this review because this experience was so awful. i took my cat into this clinic because he was showing signs of severe pain when i had returned home from work late one night. i rushed him to this emergency vet as they were the first ones that came up when i searched on google with decent reviews. after an exam it turned out he had a urinary block and would need surgery. they told me this was a life threatening case and he needed immediate attention. before they could start anything, they needed a payment of $4000. it was past midnight and i’m a university student from out of province, i explained that i had no way of paying this sum right now as it was late and i could not contact anyone to lend money from until the morning. i told her i could pay a partial deposit of some sorts just to get his treatment started and have the rest by the morning. the vet had told me “we need the payment in full. you better figure it out if you would like your cat to be treated, his life is at risk here” i was left alone in the room and immediately started researching other late night vet clinics near me. i had made the decision to transfer him over to another clinic. when the vet came in i told her this and she responded “there’s no other clinics open, this is your only option”. i had then told her about the clinic i had found and she responds “well did you call them? how do you know they will even take him?”. i was done conversing with her over this as i saw it a waste of time asked her to bring me my animal. she had me sign a release form and told me “i will call this clinic within an hour and if we find out you are not there i am reporting you to the police for animal abuse and negligence. your cat needs treatment or he will die”. after about 15 minutes and a paid $200 bill for the pain medication they had distributed to him and his exam, my cat was in my possession. i had taken him to the emergency animal hospital in Langford; Waves. Amazingly friendly and understanding staff, they started treatment right away after i had explained my financial issues. the total bill came out to be just over $1000. This chain establishment of “veterinarians” financially takes advantage of people and their pets in their most vulnerable state. never bring your animal to this clinic. heartless, manipulative, and money hungry.

Fantastic experience: We accessed urgent care services at VCA central Victoria vet hospital 3 times over my beautiful dog's (Nova) life, and each time we were met with calm, empathy and competence from each person involved. The first time was around 10 years ago when Nova had eaten chicken bones and became symptomatic. The second time was around Christmas time a few yrs later when she had found a large bag of chocolate and had gotten into it. The final visit was two days ago when we had to come to the devastating decision for euthanasia after an unexpected event. Nova was my first dog and she occupies so much space in my heart..the anticipatory grief when we showed up was profound...and even though it was a busy evening, we were treated so gently and everything felt private, respectful and unrushed. The admin staff were quick at getting us into a room, the vet nurses were skilled and gentle and Dr. McCormack held space for our grief, and was very calm and quiet with our girl. Thank you to the team on that night.. you helped make a very painful experience a little easier.
Hi Caroline, thank you very much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review. We are truly glad to have been able to support you and provide care for Nova over the years. It means a lot to us to have been by your side during this challenging time, and please know that we are here for you whenever you may need us in the future.
Fantastic experience: I can’t speak highly enough of the incredible staff here. From Teegan, who warmly checked us in, to Meredith, who conducted the initial exam, and finally Dr. Gurney, who cared for our beloved Pekoe and had the difficult task of delivering the heartbreaking news that he wouldn’t be leaving the hospital—each one of them was compassionate, kind, and supportive. Even in the midst of my devastation, their empathy made a profound impact on me, and I felt compelled to leave this review as a way of expressing my gratitude for the care and comfort they provided during such a painful time.
Hello Pamela, we are pleased to hear that you received excellent care and that our team was able to support you during this time. Thank you for taking a moment to share your thoughts about your experience with us; it means a lot to us.
Negative experience: We brought my dog in last night to be put down peacefully. We thought she would pass naturally as she was 16 and felt it was her time and she was showing no signs of pain until right before we decided to bring her in. When we got to the clinic the receptionist subtly shamed us for not having brought her to a vet in the previous years (despite zero health issues). The vet then came in and proceeded to shame us for the same thing as well as for providing her with medication that we had already had for her to make her passing more peaceful. Despite the very hard time we were going through, they showed little to no sympathy and instead made myself and my family feel bad and inferred we did not care for our very loved animal enough. Seriously unprofessional work and not understanding of the situation.
Hi Joe, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We sincerely apologize for the experience you had with us and our staff. If you’re open to it, one of our leadership team members would be more than happy to speak with you further. Please feel free to give us a call at your convenience at 250 475 2495
Negative experience: This review is for 2 years prior; I'll explain why. We took our first born baby girl here on the recommendation of our vet. He actually called and set an emergency appointment directly without asking us what hospital we would like to take her to. He said it was a dire situation and we needed to go right then and there (covid times, so I wasn't even allowed in the clinic while he assessed her; he came right out the door and told me the VCA hospital was expecting me). She had a very elevated heart rate and breathing apprehension which is why I took her in; but she was eating and drinking normally. So I took her to the hospital on our vet's recommendation (I say 'recommendation' but he basically sent me there forcefully). My wife was pregnant with our second child about to go on maternity leave, and I was in Camosun College for my second year apprenticeship with an apprentice EI wage; so we didn't have a lot of money at this time. They kept asking how much we were willing to spend, and tried to guilt us into spending as much as possible for all the tests they felt was needed. Overall; they suggested $5000+. We couldn't afford that. We opted for $1000 which we still couldn't afford but made it work anyways, because we absolutely love our baby girl. After all was said and done, our baby girl came home with us with tests done to the budget we provided, and they set us up on very expensive medications that we were told she needed for the rest for her life. However; we were also told she'd be lucky to make it through the night; and even if she did and she seemed to improve, we had a year at best. The ABSOLUTE best circumstance was that she would only live for another year. So we did the very expensive medications for a few months; thinking that they knew what they were talking about, and of course our vet not only sent us there but also does surgeries there. He is very much a part of that hospital and we had very high praise of our vet. We didn't know he was a VCA sellout, and what this company actually was at that point in time. The medications she was given were for CHF (Cognitive Heart Failure). One pill was for her heart, and the other was for any fluid in her body caused by it. Twice a day we had to shove these pills down her throat. Any dog owner knows that CHF medication is a double-edged sword. It might help with heart failure, but it slowly shuts down other organs in their body; like their liver or kidneys, extending their life but essentially killing them another way. I didn't think this diagnosis was right from the get-go; there were ZERO prior symptoms and it came on really fast. But I love my baby girl and I did it anyways... for a few months. I reached out to other vets for a second opinion, and the ones NOT owned by VCA told me otherwise. So we stopped the medications immediately. It turns out, she doesn't have CHF. She might have had a mild case of pneumonia; which I guess the secondary medication prescribed was probably usefull in draining the water out of her lungs. That's all it was; the CHF medication did a number on her, and when the time finally comes for the end of her life, I'll always blame myself and the medication she was on that was not needed that most likely did a number on her other organs while she was taking it and it was not needed. I'll forever wonder how much more time she would have had on this Earth if we had just sought a second opinion from elsewhere to properly diagnose what the issue actually was. I'm proud; OVERLY proud, to announce our baby girl that was given a 'single' night to live, or a year at best has had two birthdays since then. Without the expensive and deadly medication prescribed. And she has been perfect since she stopped taking those pills. She became her normal self again. If our vet happens to see this and has wondered why we haven't brought our girls in there for a long time; this is why. Seek a second opinion; you owe loyalty to your best friend, not your vet, or money hungry corporations. UPDATE: She is about to celebrate her 4th birthday since then :)
Hi Matty, we really appreciate the time you took to write this review. Firstly so happy to hear she has celebrated her 4th birthday! We would love the chance to address your concerns and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss them with you further. If you could give us a call at 250 475 2495 and ask to speak with management, we would be more than happy to assist you.
Fantastic experience: Our dog has received amazing service here. We moved from the mainland in September and knew we would need to find a neurologist as our dog had been put on steroids by a neurologist in Vancouver after a lengthy seizure 4 months prior and was now being weaned off. The neurologist at VCA gave our dog a thorough exam and read her file from Vancouver and agreed with the assessment of weaning her off. However, 2 weeks later, our dog became immobile. It was frightening and I thought she was paralyzed from the waist down. When we got to VCA, I was verging on a serious panic attack. The neurologist was technically done for the day but said she would take the time to see our dog. She said that our dog needed to immediately go back onto a steroid dosage everyday and they would give her one that evening intravenously in order for it to be fast acting. The following morning, we woke her up to see if she could walk and she could. I cried from relief. After being back on the full dosage for 2 weeks, she had another check up with the neurologist. They diagnosed her with an auto-immune disease. Again, I cried from relief. After not having answers for 6 months at this point and paying $10k + on the mainland for inconclusive tests, we finally know what is going on and how to manage it without giving her steroids that have poor long term effects. Outside of neurology, she is also seeing a rehab specialist at VCA as she has lost quite a lot of muscle mass from the steroids and has been highly inactive these last 6 months and their immeasurable support makes me truly believe that my 8 year old dog will have a long and fulfilling life. Thank you so much VCA and to all the staff that have helped us and our baby girl. Picture 1: Her home after the IV steroid. Picture 2: Her a few weeks later
Dear Shawna, thank you for taking the time to leave us such a thoughtful review. We're delighted to hear that your pup has had a positive experience with us in various departments. We will certainly share your kind words with our team members!
Fantastic experience: Incredibly dedicated, friendly, and passionate staff! The initial evaluation and assessment of vitals is free. So if you’re unsure, bring your pet in and they take a look before you need to start thinking about any costs. They took incredible care of our boy and gave us great updates. They even accommodated us to visit him while he was in hospital.
Hi Kayla, I truly appreciate you taking the time to share this lovely review! It’s wonderful to hear that you and your kitty felt well cared for and had such a positive experience with us.
Fantastic experience: Offering a complimentary triage service is such an amazing thing to offer pet owners and shows their level of care and consideration for the animals in Victoria . Thank you Alexa and Melissa for providing such excellent care of our boy Kato.
Hi Cody, thank you for your kind review, and glad we could provide excellent care for Kato!
Positive experience: I have mixed emotions about this place. First visit was great to get a foxtail stuck in my cat's eye out. Vet was knowledgeable, awesome and cost effective. It was treated with care and attention. Home care was also easy to follow. Second visit- not so great and after $1000 worth of tests no verdict yet they failed to properly examine my cat's mouth which had a mouth infection which was part of the problem. Told also possible renal disease start when there are 2 tests that can determine with 95% accuracy and wanting to run more tests. Vets need to realize not everyone has pet insurance and give options. Told go home try to get cat to gain weight and take to vet for more tests. Well I put him on renal food to no avail to then take to the vet to confirm as I suspected- he has dental- mouth issues which was causing him to not want to eat and be lethargic. The last report from here also on my cat is WRONG including with errors based on assumptions by their staff. So one great and thankful experience and one not great.
Hi Simone, we are glad to hear you were happy with your prior visit. We are sorry to hear about your recent experience and we would be happy to talk about your concerns. Unfortunately we are unable to discuss this in a public forum, however, if you would like to contact the hospital and request to speak with leadership at 250 475 2495.
Negative experience: The past few days have been tough for our family because our dog has been sick. It all started with our dog vomiting and shaking uncontrollably, so we decided to take him to the hospital. When we arrived, we were checked in very quickly. Within minutes, we were in a room, and then a nurse came and told us she would take Buddy for a physical exam. She explained that we couldn't go with him so the doctor could examine him quickly. Within five minutes, she brought Buddy back and informed us that he was fine. They would give him an anti-nausea injection, and then we could leave. When we went to pay the bill, we were told we needed to purchase two cans of food, which was fine. The total bill came to over $300. We went home same night we noticed that there was a hug bump on his chest and after close inspecting him we notice he had a tick bite. We removed the tick and he seem to have a bit of comfort. The follow morning he was vomitted a couple time and ran stool that was blood. This really scared us so we immediately took him into our Vet which put him on meds and done some blood work to figure out the cause. I doubt that the hospital did any exam on Buddy, how can you not notice the huge bump on his chest and the tick on his belly. Your company and doctor and nurse are heartless and just wanted money. I would not recommend anyone taking there sick animal to this place.
Hi Lianne, we are sorry you are unhappy with your experience and we would be happy to talk about your concerns. Unfortunately we are unable to discuss this in a public forum, however, if you would like to contact the hospital and request to speak with leadership at 250 475 2495.
Negative experience: They care more about the money than the animals. Receptionists laughing and joking while you have a waiting room of grieving pet owners. $8000.00 or the option to put your pet down or surrender them so they can fix up the pet and then adopt it out to someone else. This without even looking at the animal. Saseenos is your best option, they actually care about you and your pets and work with you to be able to keep your pet!!
Hi Fro, we are sorry you are unhappy with your experience and we would be happy to talk about your concerns. If you would like to contact the hospital and request to speak with leadership at 250 475 2495.
Negative experience: We took our very sick cat and they turned us away, they wouldn’t even do a triage. They said they were at capacity. Very upsetting. We drove to Waves in Langford and received amazing service.
Hi David, we are sorry you are unhappy with your experience and we would be happy to talk about your concerns. If you would like to contact the hospital and request to speak with leadership at 250 475 2495.
Fantastic experience: The staff were very kind, and gave great advice on the phone when our dog was in distress. The one time we had to bring him in for an appointment, they were so helpful, and resolved our dogs issue efficiently. Thanks for the great service you provide in Victoria.
Thank you for the review Chanel, glad to hear you and your pup were happy with our service!
Fantastic experience: My partner and I went there just past midnight on our first night with our cat. The staff took great care of her, and Dr. Diana quickly provided a diagnosis. Fortunately, no procedures were needed. I’ll definitely return if my cat has any future issues. Thanks again to the night team!
Hi Oliver, thank you for taking the time to write a kind review. Happy to hear your cat is doing well!
Fantastic experience: We had such a good experience with Dr. Gillette. Our family dog was very unwell and she was so calm and efficient. Even though his prognosis was ultimately poor we had utter faith in her abilities. She performed a difficult procedure and made his last few days much easier. We were so grateful to have more time to say bye.
Hi Ashleigh, thank you for taking the time to write a kind review, and glad we could be here for you in your time of need.
Fantastic experience: So grateful for this place! We came from the gulf islands in the morning with a wounded cat, and the team here were excellent - a few stitches and sedation and 10 days in a cone but she healed up nicely and is back at it all again and we made it home on the evening ferry. Probably just a slow day but the team was calm and effective, professional and kind.
Thank you for the kind review Susan, and hope she continues to heal nicely at home!
Fantastic experience: This incredible team should be so proud of the amazing care they provide. From reception, facilities, the techs, imaging and docs, these people are the best of the best and I’m so happy they will always be there when my pet needs it most. Thank you VCA Central
Hi Sarah, thank you for taking the time to write such a kind review!
Fantastic experience: They are excellent. My golden retriever had a neurological episode and Dr. Bernard is fantastic. She is brilliant, kind, thorough and answers all of your questions. They have taken such good care of my senior boy. Thank you for being so supportive and kind during one of the most stressful and upsetting times.
Thank you for writing such a kind review Erica, glad we could be here for you in your time of need.
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience here tonight. They were able to get us in right away when our cat decided to swallow a whole hair tie before we could get it out of his mouth. I was never more happy to see my cats vomit with hair tie in tow in my life. The staff here are all really awesome, very professional, friendly and relaxed. I’m so glad they saved our kitty from having more issues if he were to have fully digested it. He is now pleasantly sedated and hair tie free! Thank you from pippin and our fam! ♥️♥️
Thank you for the kind review Chelsey, and glad to hear Pippin is doing better!
Negative experience: My dog got diagnosed with lymphoma and my vet referred me to them to answer questions about chemo/ other options as he's 13 years old. The doctor wouldn't answer any questions or even talk to me about the chemo without having me do a $300 "phone consultation " which wasn't even an hour. That's insane, I understand that they're time is important but I can't believe that they want me to pay to have someone too me how much that I'd have to pay for chemo or radiation therapy.
Hi Eric, we would be happy to talk about your concerns if you would like to give us a call. Consultations with our specialists do have a standard fee associated, which includes the doctor reviewing your pet's medical record, including any tests that have been completed, discussing all of your options and creating an individualized plan with you for your pet. Please let us know if you would like to discuss anything further. We are here to help.
Fantastic experience: Thank you sooo much to the staff and drs that helped take care of my dog Bear . Im so grateful for the amazing care we recived.
Thank you for taking the time to writ such a lovely review Christina!
I'm glad Bear is doing well, and thank you for the great picture!
Fantastic experience: Big Kudos and Appreciation for Dr Leger and team who cared for my girl Loki yesterday! The turkey decided to scale our fence after a deer (most likely) and got clipped by a moving car. Exposed bone on the back left leg. I was so impressed with the care we received. We (my other dog and I) were offered a private room and water while waiting for the vet upon assessment. I received a phone call several hours later to pick her up, and a text message today (within 24hrs) checking on her status. If only our human healthcare system was so caring!
Thank you for the kind review Rachelle! We sincerely hope Loki continues to recover well at home!
Fantastic experience: One star down due to cost, but 10 Stars for the absolute professional service, they save your pet if it’s possible. And I changed it to 5 star, if you treasure the life of your pet, as difficult as it is in these financial times, get these guys working on your pet, cant say the same about the many vets in Victoria that cost as much in the end after more pain and suffering. You saved my cats life and she is doing great.
Hi Larry, thank you taking the time to write such a kind review. I hope your kitty continues to do thrive at home!
Fantastic experience: I have nothing but good things to say about this vet hospital. They saved my baby Jazzy’s life and I’m forever grateful to the wonderful staff who work here. The receptionist staff are so welcoming and kind, the techs and nurses are so empathetic and sweet, and Dr. Boller was great, she and her team were extremely knowledgeable, communicative, and helpful. She genuinely cared about the well-being of my cat and she was also mindful of my financial circumstances, she took the time to work with me to come up with a treatment plan that was suitable for me and my kitty. Obviously the hospital will always be more expensive than a regular vet, but it was worth every penny to save my Jazzy.
Thank you the kind review Mandee! We're glad you received such a high level of care, and hope Jazzy continues to thrive at home.
Fantastic experience: We went there at around 5 PM with my dog Coby and he was having an allergic reaction to a wasp sting. They were fabulous got him in right away and checked him over and said that he would be fine and we could go home amazing group of people there very friendly and professional! Every time I’ve gone there with my dogs they have always been very thorough and compassionate.!
Thank you for the review Susan. We are glad to hear you received prompt service, and that Coby is recovering well!
Fantastic experience: We had an emergency situation with our dog ingesting something -VCA was there for us! Yes it is expensive, but they have Vets and techs on location 24/7 and they give an estimate and thoroughly explain your options - very professional and kind. Thank you VCA Victoria!
Thank you for the kind review Jenn, we will always be here 24/7 for any emergencies!
Fantastic experience: Our dog had an allergic reaction to ants, the team was amazing from arrival to departure! Nigel has lots of anxiety and the kindness and confidence of the team helped him remain as calm as he can be. Can’t say enough about VCA Victoria!
Thank you for the kind review Jennifer! Glad to hear Nigel had a positive experience with us.
Fantastic experience: I was here a few weeks ago after my dog had spear grass embedded into her ear ( which I didn’t know) and she ended up needing to get it surgically removed. The staff were so kind and empathetic and just treated us with so much dignity. The front desk staff member I think her name was Teagan ? Was so so kind and gentle with us and helpful and so compassionate while I cried and just was so professional with so many empathy and warmth . Thank you for treating us with so much warmth, empathy and dignity on a horrible evening .
Thank you for the kind review Adrienne.
And hope your dog is feeling better!
Negative experience: They gave me an estimate of $5300 bill off the bat and do ALL tests at once for my cat. This is a scam. Even for a human, you do test one by one. Not ALL at once. Especially it was only an UTI at the end. My final bill end up about $3500. I do not think it was fair. The guilt trip is real especially when pet owners weren't thinking straight. You are taking advantage of that. DO NOT go to this hospital if it's necessary.
Hi Calin, we're sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with us, and want to assure you that we are taking your concerns seriously. Because you have also contacted the hospital with your information, we will be able to review your visit and a member of our management team will be in touch with you soon. Thank you for your patience.
Fantastic experience: Cannot thank the VCA team enough for their amazing work. We brought in our dog due to her having ingested a spear grass seed that had lodged in her throat. The entire team at VCA, including the front end and a final year vet student, were responsive, kind and compassionate, and our vet Dr McCormack was amazing at addressing our concerns and helping our dog. We felt our baby was in good hands the whole time she was in their care, and the total cost ended up being much lower than we anticipated. We were given comprehensive home care instructions and three days later our dog is back to her normal self. Thank you again the entire team at VCA. (The place is also spotless and very comfortable to be in, which makes a huge difference during such a stressful time!)
Thank you for writing this kind review Christine. We're glad to hear your dog was treated with such care, and happy to hear she's doing better!
Negative experience: For gawd sake dont let your timid feline stay overnight for observation, better yet take your scardey cats to an animal hospital with feline only recovery rooms. My cat, who suffered a traumatic kittenhood and is already afraid was subjected to a night of blind terror for hours on end for sharing a “recovery room” (torture chamber?) with whining barking dogs with their jingling tags, and staff crashing and banging around at all hours because it was also a supply room, so the activity and noise level was through the roof 24/7. I was horrified when I went to pick her up and saw the conditions and will never go back. To their credit they did put a blanket over the front so there was a level of separation however the conditions are simply not adequate. There needs to be a separate room each for dogs cats and supplies.
Hi Diane, we are sorry to hear about your negative experience. If you would like to discuss your concerns with a member of our leadership, please give us a call at (250)475-2495 or email [email protected] to provide your contact information. We are happy to talk further to address your concerns. Thank you.
Fantastic experience: We live on Salt Spring and had to take our cat off Island due to lack of emergency vets and severely infected puncture wounds. The staff and Vets here at VCA were so amazing. I would highly reccomend them! Our kitty is doing great.
Thank you for you kind review Amedee, and glad to hear your kitty is doing well!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic emergency vet with great care! We have taken a couple of our cats here under emergency circumstances and we have been seen quickly (for an emergency practice!) and efficiently each time. I can't understand the wait complaints, this is an emergency clinic and functions like a human A&E, waiting is part of the course. Grateful to have this service in Victoria and thank you to the fantastic staff up front and back for their hard work
Thank you for your review, Chloe!
Fantastic experience: Nobody ever wants to find themselves in an emergency situation with their pet, but if you do, this is the place to go. The staff were all kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, and extremely efficient. The bill was also significantly less than I expected given the situation. I could not have asked better care for Newton. Thanks!
Thank you for your positive feedback. We are committed to providing care and support in emergency situations and hope that Newton is recovering comfortably at home.
Fantastic experience: VCA provided an exceptionally high level of care for my cat, Coal. Dr. Boller and her team kept me very well informed during his treatment and stay at the hospital with texts and calls throughout the day. Coal was admitted in a critical condition, but only 3 days later he was discharged after making a full recovery. I would highly recommend VCA for any sick pets!
Thank you for your review Nick, and happy to hear Coal is recovering well!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely wonderful service from all three vets, many techs, and administration staff! I could tell them genuinely cared about my kitty and I. Such kind staff made a huge difference for my anxiety and stress levels resulting from the situation. Cannot recommend them enough, they are exactly the people you want in an emergency situation.
Thank you for your thoughtful review. We are dedicated to providing the utmost care and compassion and sincerely hope that you and your beloved kitty are doing well following your visit.
Fantastic experience: I would like to thank Dr. Johansen for her exemplary care for our cat, and the human approach she had with me. She very clearly explained all of our options, including risks and outcomes, with kindness and compassion. I can’t imagine how difficult her job must be but she is fantastic at it. We have had experiences in other clinics and vet hospitals that were upsetting and confusing and I am happy to say that my experience here was excellent despite the circumstances we were there. I would also like to recognize the support team for their kindness and professionalism.
Thank you for the kind review, Jennifer. We strive to provide the best care for our beloved companions.
Fantastic experience: Very compassionate care for our old cat who had to be euthanized today. Everything was explained and there were lots of options. They made us comfortable and arranged it so we could duck out the back door when all was said and done. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We offer our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your pet and are grateful that we were able to assist you during this difficult time.
Positive experience: My pet came in for radiation therapy, was called a great candidate, and was treated like royalty during our time at VCA. Unfortunately it wasn’t a success, the cancer appeared to spread and my bestie quickly went downhill in the weeks following. The team wasn’t very responsive and I felt abandoned and helpless, watching my pet get weaker and weaker. Then had to say goodbye to my best friend a month after treatment so that they wouldn’t suffer. No treatment is guaranteed; this one unfortunately didn’t give us any additional time together or boost quality of life. I wouldn’t put my pet or myself through the stress of this treatment again. Radiation was both financially and emotionally draining and in the end, not worth it. We can’t go backward, however, immunotherapy and holistic treatments might have given my friend a boost for the time that we have left together and eased some of the suffering. This is just one experience, everyone has to make their own decision for their pet and circumstances.
Fantastic experience: We took our dog here last week for an emergency visit when our vet couldn’t see us and everyone at the hospital was helpful, patient and transparent in the costs and recommendations for our dog. They got him in almost right away and were diligent with update phone calls and communication. The bill ended up being lower than originally estimated so we weren’t hit with any surprise costs. Hopefully we don’t have to but in another emergency we wouldn’t hesitate to take him there again.
Thank you for your review Jackson! We are pleased to hear that you were satisfied with the level of care provided for your companion
Fantastic experience: We arrived home on Christmas morning from a 2 week vacation, and the first thing I did was find my cat and best buddy, Mini, to give him a big long hug. He was so happy to see us and hang out with us, up on the table, wandering around, that it wasn't until 8hrs later, when we sat down to watch a movie and he jumped in our lap, that we realised he was in distress, he had hid it well. He wanted so much to be in our laps, but his breathing was laboured and he couldn't get comfortable. We bundled him up and took him to VCA right away. The staff were amazing, supportive, and comforting when we received the worst possible news. Our sweet boy was in congestive heart failure, and the prognosis was not good. We asked them to do what they could, but his heart wouldn't stabilize after draining the fluid away, and he developed a blood clot, so we had no choice but to let him go. They allowed us to be with him at the end to give him his final pets, kisses, and hugs. We are shattered, but we can't thank the staff enough for their support for us, their care for Mini, and the all round sensitive way they dealt with everything. Thank you so much! Lance Montgomery and Elisabeth Ribeiro
We extend our sympathies and gratitude for your positive feedback. We are grateful that we were able to offer compassionate care to you during that difficult period
Fantastic experience: Blair ( The Vet ) was absolutely an amazing Vet in our emergency situation . Not only did he take time being very thorough with our priceless fur baby , Chloe-Lynn , He had amazing "bedside manner " as the saying goes . And calmed all of us , including a 3 way call between 2 different places plus one owner with her there with Blair . He didn't miss a beat ( while a baby of the 2 legged variety was crying in the background of the call as she was tired and ready to nap ) He kept all 3 owners in the loop and made sure that our Beautiful Blue Brindle Staffordshire terrier ( Large breed pitbull ) was given plenty of T.LC . The other staff was compassionate and comforting and treated my mother with respect and understanding. We were given clear concise direction for her care , as well as an understanding of what we are dealing with in depth . I am beyond grateful they could be there for us all . Thank-you so very much . With much respect I wish you all the best over the holiday season and through the years to come . Thankyou kindly.
Thank you for the thoughtful review. We take pride in the high level of care we provide for your companions!
Fantastic experience: It's not a great time when you have to visit a 24 hour vet, but this place was fantastic. The service and care was exceptional. Sure, it was a long night, but the team caring for my dog was great. Clean facility, incredibly equipped with I feel everything you could ever want. 10/10, would have a sleepless night again.
Fantastic experience: After several months of coming to terms with a deeply traumatic experience, I feel ready to share my thoughts on VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital. My wife and I were devastated when our new puppy, whom we had for less than a week, tested positive for Parvovirus. This news was heart-wrenching, as she had been sold to us while already infected. During this incredibly difficult time, the staff at VCA were nothing short of compassionate and professional. When we brought our severely ill puppy in, they were charismatic and supportive, ensuring that any decision we made was without pressure from them. Faced with the grim choice of either euthanizing our puppy or opting for treatment, we chose to proceed with treatment. Throughout this process, the staff were exemplary in their care and communication. They kept us regularly updated, providing a detailed account of our puppy's condition. Sadly, despite their best efforts and ours, our puppy succumbed to the illness within 72 hours. Parvovirus is a cruel disease, and though we did everything possible, it was not enough to save her. The financial aspect, often a concern in such situations, was handled with utmost transparency and sensitivity. Our bill amounted to $7,000, but given the circumstances and the level of care provided, it didn't feel unreasonable. I never felt like we were being overcharged. The compassion and professionalism shown by the team at VCA were of great comfort during an incredibly painful time. For anyone facing pet health crises, I can confidently recommend VCA Canada Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital for their honest, caring, and professional service.
Fantastic experience: Had to take my 9 year old golden in as he was unable to swallow anything and vomiting. They were amazing with him. Treated his pneumonia and gave meds to support him. Unfortunately we found a tumor in his lungs and had to say goodbye to him today but the staff at CVA were great and supportive and gave me another week with him.
Fantastic experience: Great job caring for my critically ill elderly dog. First time in this amazing facility and I now realize how lucky Victoria is to have it, as well as all the services and specialized equipment it offers. Wonderful and compassionate veterinary care, and efficient and professional support staff. I have found my local VCA vet clinic to be very expensive, but in the case of the Central Animal Hospital I totally understand the high cost of keeping a facility like this running and I have no objection to what they charged.
Fantastic experience: I can't begin to thank the staff and vet who cared for our dog when he became gravely ill 2 days ago. The team was able to keep our pet comfortable until we could drive back to the city to be with him. All communication was clear and understandable and our choices were respected. The Hospital was stocked with absolutely up to date equipment and was very clean. Privacy was offered which was appreciated.
Negative experience: Upon the passing of my dog, there was ZERO compassion! The girl, after being corrected multiple times couldn’t comprehend that my dog was a MALE. On top of this, an insurance form was submitted by the hospital with no invoice attached. Nothing. Just the claim form. What is this..?! Amateur hour…?! These pets are our family members! Get your act together!!!
Fantastic experience: I can't thank VCA Animal Hospital enough for their exceptional care and support during a life-threatening emergency with our beloved Calzone. Our furry friend was suffering from urinary stones and severe blockages, and the Vets at this hospital truly saved his life on a Saturday night at 2am. The level of expertise and dedication displayed by the veterinary team is beyond remarkable. They not only diagnosed the issue promptly but also handled the emergency with precision and speed, leaving us with immense gratitude. What made this experience even more remarkable is the compassion they showed when we faced our transportation challenges. Since we didn't have access to a car, they went above and beyond by sending us pictures of our boy and providing regular follow-ups, easing our anxiety during this difficult time. We are forever thankful to the entire team at VCA Animal Hospital for their outstanding care, expertise, and compassion. Calzone is now healthy and happy, all thanks to their incredible efforts. We highly recommend VCA Animal Hospital to all pet owners in need of top-notch veterinary care. You won't find a more dedicated and caring team anywhere else.
Negative experience: We have brought our baby to this clinic regularly since he had a flare up of a back issue last year. The front desk staff have always been so sweet and kind, knew Benson by name and were always excited to see him. Erin and the rehab department took incredible care of him, their love for animals shone through in every interaction, always willing to talk us through options and trial different methods of care to accommodate our budget and gave us at home exercises to try. Dr Barnard, Tonja and the neuro department were also amazing. Their bedside manner with ourselves and Benson were apparent in each visit. I can't thank either of these departments enough for their care. We had to rush our baby in to the clinic on Friday due to respiratory issues which turned out to be an internal bleed from ruptured tumour on his spleen. The vet that supported us was kind, compassionate and talked us through our options and was very understanding of how incredibly traumatic it was for us to find out that Benson was near the end of his life. As someone who works in healthcare, I feel that the prices charged at the clinic are understandable given the cost of procedure, rising operational costs and need to pay veterinarians, techs and other support staff wages for their time, experience and the emotional toll providing care to our sweet babies can take. Unfortunately, our baby took a turn and they were able to to provide CPR to keep him alive so that we were able to say goodbye. The reason for the one star review was the tech that brought his little body in to us to spend time before we said goodbye. She was incredibly rude, short and insensitive. We were distraught, and she rushed a conversation about what we would like to do with his body, and shoved a debit machine in my face while we were trying to have our last goodbyes. While I understand a need to complete payment, we had already provided a sizeable deposit which covered almost the entire cost. During other visits, they had provided a text to pay option. Her bedside manner was atrocious, and that experience has completely changed my view of this clinic, as well as marred my last minutes with our baby.
Fantastic experience: We are so lucky to have such an outstanding Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Victoria!!! Our pets have been to this vet hospital several times over the past 15 years, including on a holiday. Every time, the service was excellent. Their care for our furry loved one was swift, very thorough and reassuring for us. Thank you for your dedication, skill and compassion.
Negative experience: Waited for 3 hours just to get a technician to look into my cat’s injured eye and then was told it would take a couple more hours for the doctor to see her. I understand that long waits are typical in an emergency clinic but would have greatly appreciated transparency instead of telling me it won’t be “that long”. I chose to take my kitty back home and get her checked the next day and wasn’t charged anything at least.
Fantastic experience: Excellent service. No one wants an emergency vet visit, but they make it as stress-free as possible. My dog has been there twice, both times for eating things she shouldn’t have. Expect a $500 bill, but also expect to receive excellent care.
Fantastic experience: I definitely recommend VCA & will take my doggy here again! My first visit to VCA was when my dog, Remi, ate a cake of suet plus more birdseed while I was at work. At the time, I had very little funds, so the vet tech worked with me & the vet so I got the vet's advice & a can of special dog food for free! Luckily Remi got better within a day or so & didn't have bloat or blockage. My second visit to VCA was today, when we noticed Remi having some issues with her eye. There was a bit of a wait before being seen by the vet, but that's to be expected at any ER. A great vet tech saw her within 10 mins of us checking in! And there is free coffee & comfy chairs, so waiting wasn't so bad. Remi received treatment for her eye, plus a cone & drops to take home. All in all, it only came to $375! The vet, vet techs, and staff here are amazing & so welcoming, & were so gentle & caring with Remi. Dr. Jen van der Lee was very informative & sweet, explained everything detail & made treatment as comfortable for Remi as possible. Thank you so much, VCA!
Fantastic experience: These. People. Care I've never been given such personal care, as well as the deep and true love and care my baby boy was given. I cannot even begin to describe my gratitude to this clinic and every single person in it. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. -Felix's parents. We're happy he's home!
Fantastic experience: This is my go to vet hospital for emergencies. My cat Foo had to have emergency surgery 9 years ago and they took such good care of him and reassured me that he would be okay and everything went so well. This week he had another emergency come up, so we instantly took him here. All the staff are so kind and friendly, and they take such good care of him. I feel so much better durning stressful situations and emergency surgeries knowing he is in their care.
