Expérience fantastique: Our beautiful little dog Augie was a patient at Hillside Veterinary Hospital from the time he was 10 weeks old until he passed away more than 15 years later at the end of 2025. During all those years, we received consistently wonderful care from Hillside Vet. The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful; the techs were kind and professional; and the veterinarians were skilled and compassionate. We never felt pushed into any procedures or unfairly charged for anything. Instead, we felt we had a place we could rely on to help care for our beloved pup. We feel especially thankful to Augie's primary vet, Dr. Sylvie Abrioux, who was a calm, kind and expert presence throughout Augie's life, and to Dr. Abigail Smith, who also cared for Augie over the years and was so compassionate during his final few days, when his health took a sudden sharp downturn. We are so grateful to the whole team.

Expérience négative: I want to preface this review by saying that my family has been going to Hillside Vet for 17 years for several pets and up until the last few years, we have had fairly good experiences there. I also have noticed that many of the negative reviews listed here have been discredited in some way by the person in charge of responding to them (either by saying that it doesn’t match what’s in their files or that they don’t recognize the name on the review), so that is likely to happen to mine as well. Our cat is a sweet boy, but very fractious at the vet and requires a high dose of gabapentin for appointments. We were told via email to give him gapabentin and fast him for 13 hours beforehand in case sedation was required. Over the phone, the receptionist said “you’ll probably want a morning appointment because of the fasting”. For his 9am appointment, he was still aggressive, so we agreed to sedation as discussed and that they would call us after his exam. We were NOT told that they did not actually BOOK a time block for his sedation, despite telling us to fast him. Because they did not book time for him, they had other patients to see first, and he was kept in a cage without food or water for hours (on top of fasting). We called around 3pm because we hadn’t heard anything, and they hadn’t even seen him yet. He was finally sedated and examined around 4pm. The gabapentin had worn off, and it apparently took 4 people to sedate him because he was so aggressive and scared. They called us after his exam to tell us that he was finished and that we would be called when he was ready for pickup. Around 5pm, I got a call asking when I was coming to pick him up. I said I was waiting for them to call as discussed, and they said “It must have been a miscommunication.” Upon pickup, he was so sedated that he couldn’t hold his own head up. They actually had to prop his head up with a rolled towel so that he didn’t suffocate. When we arrived home, he kept falling down and couldn’t move his mouth to eat. He hadn’t eaten for nearly 24 hours at that point and gabapentin makes them even hungrier, and he physically was too sedated to eat. He has never been sent home from sedation in that state, and should have stayed at the vet for monitoring until he was more alert. I am confident that if I had known that my cat was not actually booked in for sedation and would have had to wait for 7 hours to be seen, resulting in nearly 24 hours without food and 10 hours without water, I would have elected to postpone to another day. Because of what happened, we asked to have a call with the clinic manager, who called us the next day. She told us that fasting them overnight and then the cat not being seen for sedation until late afternoon, even after being fasted for 13 hours prior, was “standard practice” at the vet, but were also told by a vet tech that the reason he wasn’t seen until later was because they were short staffed. So which is it? Also, we were told that they didn’t have sufficient staff until later in the day to handle him (as it required 4 people to hold him down), but he wouldn’t have needed that many if they had sedated him while he still had the gabapentin in his system. Because I mentioned that I work in healthcare, the clinic manager said that I should understand how triage works and that they had other, more urgent patients to see before our cat (clearly an attempt to make me feel bad, even though they were the ones at fault for not actually booking him in like they should have). We were also told several times during the call that the issues that occurred were “miscommunications”. Our new vet had to sedate him for an exam, again with 12 hours of fasting prior. They booked him in for a 9am sedation and he was ready to pick up by 12:30. When we picked him up, he was sitting up, alert, and able to eat. Clearly, fasting a cat for 13 hours, putting them in a cage for another 7 hours with no food or water, and sending them home while still heavily sedated is not “standard practice” at our new vet. Will never be going back to Hillside vet.

Due to cancer, we had to say goodbye to Seamus 5 years ago. 2 weeks later, Ronan came into our lives and helped to fill the hole that was left by the loss of our first staffy. Hillside Vet continues to be our vet of choice, and as you can see... The Hillside rehab techs go out of their way to ensure that our pup gets the amazing support he needs. Thank you Hillside Vet for always being there when we need you. Our overly rambunctious Staffy, Seamus, has been coming here for 5 years and always gets treatment fit for a person. Great staff that cares about what they do.

The front desk staff was also excellent. They made our puppy feel welcomed and made sure that her experience was very positive. Highly recommend!

Expérience négative: $150 expensive assessment fee to wait 40 min following a 5 min exam for our cat. Went elsewhere for less expensive fee more thorough exam where the Dr. was really great with our nervous cat.

Expérience négative: Terrible vet clinic went there to get wormer for a lady’s dog who is in her 90’s they would not sell it to us (as they had not seen the dog recently) even though dog has gone there its whole life and this clinic has made so much money off of her. Drive to another vet who was more than glad to help once they heard the story. Very poor service definitely as another person said profit over care!

Expérience fantastique: Hillside Vet Hospital is absolutely amazing! It's evident that they care so much about their patients, and all of the staff are so incredibly helpful. Every time I call they are so kind, empathetic and they always put maximum effort into making sure my pets needs are addressed. They are great at answering my questions and directing me to resources, if necessary. I feel that my pets are in excellent hands at Hillside Vet and we are so lucky to have them!

This year I've had to take my cat in twice for emergent situations and they've been able to accommodate my visits the day of, and have been extremely helpful and calming throughout the stress of the unknown issues - especially Shannon at the front desk! Dr Smith in particular has been wonderful with my moody cat, although all of the other vets we've dealt with are great too.

Expérience négative: Profits over Pet Care. I recently took my 1 1/2 yo puppy in for shots and wellness check, specifically for scratching and what seemed to be pain he was experiencing in his ear. The veternarian had me put my puppy on the table and tried examining him in the most chaotic situation. Obviously he wouldn't sit still, and the vet did nothing to create a calm environment to be able to check the puppy. The vet seemed more interested in pushing unnecessary meds and treatments before knowing what the problem was. The whole thing was rushed and i felt like I was in a high pressured timeshare sales pitch- walked out with huge bill and no answers. Moreover, they dispensed sedation meds (and more than would be required) without my consent. I had NOT agreed to the sedation treatment and had heard the vet state they were "free", but turns out in his fast taking sales pitch, he was saying "free free". I noticed the $50 charge for the 2 meds ( marked on invoice as $5 and $10 a pill). The clinic did not accurately disclose the costs associated with dispensing fees (apparently $25) and offered to refund me cost of pills they claim were10 cents each for a total refund of $1.17. Such lack of transparency. Lastly, the manager was supposed to call me to discuss my concerns and dissatisfaction. However, it's been THREE WEEKS, and I have yet to receive that call.

Expérience négative: Based upon my recent experience, this clinic cares more about billings than they do about injured animals. I am visiting Victoria from out of province and my dog has a torn ACL and is awaiting surgical repair - our Edmonton vet prescribed Metacam for his pain but we were running out. My vet emailed a new prescription to this clinic but we were told that, regardless of it being written by a another vet, they needed to examine my dog and wanted $300 to do it. They were impatient and rude on the phone to my vet and did little to nothing to be of any help at all. By contrast, my own vet has couriered the required medicine at no charge so that my dog can be relatively pain free until his surgery. I would recommend that people with pets go ANYWHERE except this clinic - especially if you care about the well being of your pet.

Expérience fantastique: The therapists in the rehab clinic are so amazing and friendly. They provide the best care and attention, I would highly recommend taking your pup to see MJ for any physical rehab needs.

Expérience négative: It's unfortunate during this time of families struggling to make ends meet that they we can't get a renewal prescription for flea and tick medication because the animal hasn't been seen within the year. They need an extra $150 to poke my dog and say yep they are healthy and weight the exact same. I was clear with them about our needs and that we couldn't afford a visit at this time. It's a business not a service to support families and pets I guess.

Expérience fantastique: I fully trust this vet. My super difficult cat is very relaxed there. All animal lovers at that vet. Vet isn't cheap anywhere.. Having a pet can be costly and very stressful. I know i get my moneys worth here! When i had to put pets down it was handled with extreme care. Sone of these coments are just inaccurate. Update Nov 2023 Only reason I'm not dropping this vet is because the vets and techs are really good. The way I was treated the other day was gross. I was given utter heck for phoning at 11am to get a prescription by closing Apparently this is horrendous to the staff I was read the riot act and told I'd get a charge for the short notice. Today I spoke to the office manager who explained it was my interpretation of what occurred .I was told that I should have called back and ensure that the staff knew how my cats meds were doing as they are not psychic. Basically she was being and that long term clients the idea is errelevant as they treat everyone the same..then I was told a company purchased the vet clinic. So it's no longer owned by the vets.

Expérience négative: Easily the most overpriced and least compassionate vet in the city. I've taken 6 different animals to varying vets around the city and several of their best vets around 2018 ish left to Oaklands vet cause they all felt the price gouging was insanely greedy and reading the comments matching my experience, I'd have to agree. Only bring your dog here if you plan on tossing away an extra few hundred dollars. The compassion the owners have for animals isn't even measurable.

Expérience négative: This used to be my vet but I tired of the poor attitude and sales push on unnecessary treatments and vaccines. It’s not a friendly place at all. Don’t bother booking an appointment since they are always “swamped” and double book so get ready to wait. Up selling food too.

Expérience négative: We were speaking with doctor Michelle Hansford about our cat's hyperthyroidism and possible kidney disease after I had been crying all day worrying about losing her. When the doctor couldn't give us a cost estimate for treatment my partner said she was "being a little bit cagey" about the cost and he has to deal with money all day at work, she became super offended, refused to speak to us any more, hung up on us, and transferred herself off our case. Seemed like a bit of an overreaction to me as we were being perfectly polite otherwise and it was just that one word that was apparently "totally unacceptable" and "a horrible thing to say." Amazing how fast we went from being wonderful people to "awful." Hopefully in future we can find a vet's office that has a little more understanding and compassion to people making end of life decisions for their pet.

Expérience positive: There is sometimes a confusion with phone tags and a response call, either by email or phone, but other than that they are fantastic on doing a quality job on procedures and responding to our dog that didn't respond well to medications b4 surgery the first time. Then after an EKG to recheck heart before second attempt, rebooked for 2nd surgery and all went well! Our little Pom is amazing! And the cost is comparable to other vets and considerably lower than VCA. Highly recommended, would give 5 * if it it weren't for the phone/email, confusion/delay in response. Thank you and kudos!

We appreciate how helpful the staff are over the phone when we're trying to work out if our dog needs to come in or not - often the answer is no which is nice for the wallet! Expérience négative: I have been taking my dog Rhys to Hillside Vet Clinic for over 6 years and received outstanding service from Dr. Yeung, who was always very patient and understanding with my large fearful rescue. Recently Dr. Yeung left the Hillside clinic and they did not inform me; disappointing given that my dog has only gone to him for many years. The bigger issue is that it has become increasingly difficult to get an appointment when required, usually a 3-4+ week wait. Sure, that works for routine scheduled checkups but absolutely nothing else that occurs in between. They will not squeeze you in even if it’s urgent, simply refer you to the emergency clinic. I’ve also had to resort to the emergency vet clinic for minor but uncomfortable issues because it would not be fair to make my dog wait 3-4 weeks. Our last appointment was March 25, 2022 (just over 4 months ago) and my dog was prescribed eye drops for his allergies which sometimes turns into conjunctivitis when he paws at his face. They worked well and I called to make an appointment to get more as his eyes have flared up again, a 3.5 week wait! I requested a repeat on the eye drops so my dog could get some relief until the appointment and was told that my request was denied by the vet. They know my dogs history and this was not a crazy or unsafe request from a long term client who was recently there. So my options are to a) let my dog have irritated eyes for the next 3.5 weeks, b) bring my dog to the emergency clinic for eye drops, taking resources away from actual pet emergencies, or c) find a new clinic. I understand the pandemic has been hard for many businesses but this clinic has let it impact their quality of care. Sorry but routine checkups are not the only thing pet owners need. I have lots of friends with pets who have no trouble getting appointments in a timely manner at different clinics. After many years as a client, I will be finding a new clinic. Very disappointing.

Expérience fantastique: Our lovely cat Nova was with hillside vet from a kitten to the end of her life. Never have I experienced the level of compassion and care from a vet to this extent. They provided around the clock care for our girl through her illness, she had a short life, but Hillside made it possible for us to enjoy extra months with her. The admin and tech team were beyond incredible, always taking time out of their busy days to answer all of our questions and have medication ready in a matter of hours. If any pet owners are looking for that perfect vet, look no further, this is the one.

The doctors and staff are always attentive and professional, even at the busiest of times. In particular, Dr. Hauer and Dr. Abrioux have consistently provided first rate service - their support, care and compassion towards their clients and patients are unmatched. They continue to exceed my expectations.

Expérience fantastique: My little buddy had a splinter in his foot that got infected I was stressed about finding a vet appointment that wasn’t 2 weeks away.. Even though they are busy as hell right now (like all vets), they put me on the cancelation list and I was called back in less than 24 hours. Dr. Michelle and all the vet techs are so nice, and I felt like they listened, provided different options for treatment! (Not just the most expensive options) I can’t thank them enough!

Expérience négative: HORRIBLE !!!Take forever to book, do not respond to our concern., I have a large dog who needs ongoing therapy and could never book it, and they had no problem letting the medical situation worsen while they did nothing.. If a technician is not available they just cancel an appt when waited months for.( more than once!) And when we had to go elsewhere for a specific treatment they would not let is keep our chiro treatment at their hospital - again disturbing our dogs schedule and treatment plan. The one who rally suffered was my dog but they could not care less. Its about Money.Money Money and really nothing else. And I spent THOUSANDS.If you want passive aggressive unreliable, money driven care - this is your spot! Just awful and cruel with a smile!

Expérience négative: Poor... my dogs passing was horrific when they over dosed her sedative ( a chihuahua ) then didn't properly administer the final injection for euthanasia. ( truly horrific to witness and especially fir my children )Then my cat which was 19 ( we had this vet for YEARS ) they argued she was 12 (her age was on their file !) and then after her passing , on her urn and paw print , they spelled her name completely wrong (permanent engraving). Future pets .. we will find a new vet.

Completely disgusted with my interaction with this clinic as a new patient. Complete disregard for me and my pets needs with no conversations about sending me to a clinic that can see my pet. No vet. Or staff could ever make up for this. Highly discourage any new people from comong here.

Expérience fantastique: Wonderful Veterinary office. When my dog got injured and I had to leave her in the office for the day I could not have been more comfortable leaving her there. The girls who work there are always very personable and willing to share the knowledge they have. I would and have recommended them to everyone I know.

Expérience négative: I loved my vet at Hillside. I negotiated a price for neutering my pup, but she pointed out that she would not be doing the surgery. I wanted no tattoo or chip, just neutering. The day of the surgery, everything went well until I received my bill. It was more than twice the price I had been quoted. I refused to pay, and insisted that they check the file for the agreement I’d made. They honoured the price, but I have never returned. I am sorry that I had to leave my vet, but no longer trusted their business practices.

Expérience fantastique: We've been coming here here for several years and recently had our dog in for dental cleaning/surgery and I was extremely pleased by how responsive and communicative the team was. I had some pre-surgery concerns and Dr. Kristen took the time to phone me a couple times and run through everything in detail. She suggested a few additional pre-anesthesia measures we could take and they squeezed him in for a last minute x-ray to ensure there was nothing going on that would be cause for concern. The team at Hillside is hard working and very caring, and yes it's a busy clinic, but we always feel like we're a priority.

Will take my puppy (Boston Terrier) to an AAHA accredited vet where the practice has passed import and critical guidelines in pet care instead of trial and error. Staff is very friendly, but be very cautious if going here. You were warned.

Both times the staff have been very friendly and the vets I have met so far seem like they really care about your pet and they take the time to really explain things and answer any questions. I would definitely recommend Hillside Veterinary hospital for all your pet care needs!

Expérience fantastique: Hillside is a hospital like no other, he staff are immensely compassionate and work so hard to make sure every pet and owners needs are met. The Doctors are amazing, each one being so caring and go out of their way to deliver the best possible care. I am so thankful to the entire Hillside team. I lost my pup Reika in January after her battle with cancer, our Doctors were absolutely amazing and walked me through each step with such compassionate care it made all the difference. When it was time to say goodbye I knew I could count on the staff there to help me through it. I am so happy with her urn, and the generous donation they made to the Ontario Veterinary College in her name. I could never say thank you enough ❤

Expérience négative: This vet recommended my dog to go into surgery to remove a tiny mass lump on his eye (non-life threatening). My dog came out the surgery after being extubated from anesthesia. Tech immediately walked away to attend a different dog and came back 3-5 minutes later to witness my dog lifeless on their table. Did a necropsy and there was no reason for his death (overall healthy dog). I am super shocked to see that they would push for this surgery and to hear that my dog died at their hospital (with full responsibility) which may have been PREVENTED (malpractice and negligence)! Some questions: -Was the tech who extubated even qualified and experienced for the position? Coming out of anesthesia is the most critical time (actively monitor for 30 minutes upon extubating should be mandatory) -Was the extubating premature on a brachycephalic dog considering they already have issues with breathing (suspected his death resulted in collapsed palate or trachea upon extubating) -What are their emergency procedures? Do they have equipment already laid out in the event if a disaster immediately happens? What are they protocols used for such emergencies? -Was the vet understaffed which resulted in the tech to walk away to attend to another dog after being extubated (highly suspect so after several visits leading up to the surgery and other reviews) Till to this day, I am truly devastated that this happened and may have been prevented with proper procedures and protocols. As a result due to malpractice negligence at Hillside Veterinary Hospital, I lost my best friend. They did not take accountability for killing my dog. He was only 7 1/2 years old.
