McKenzie Veterinary Services: Avis
Expérience positive: They were very helpful with a same day appointment, care for our cat was fine. The vet quickly dismissed our concern that stress from a new kitten in the house was causing the issues for our cat. $400 dollars for checkup and a supplement, a few days later the cats issues resolved themselves. It was very clear that all the issues were directly caused by stress yet we had been convinced that was extremely unlikely by the young vet while we were explaining the situation.
Thank you for rating your experience, James. As an animal hospital, providing gold standard care is our top priority. If we didn't quite achieve that, we sincerely apologize and hope you'll give us another chance to exceed your expectations.
Expérience positive: the staff were lovely. the care provided was great. the vet was great with my kitty. that being said, they are charging far beyond what is reasonable and we were able to find care for our animals at a MUCH more affordable price without sacrificing quality. if money isn’t an issue for you, i recommend the care at mackenzie vet. but if you’re wanting a reasonable price, i really can’t recommend them. the quote we received for dental work was shocking and double the price of the next place
We aim to exceed our clients' expectations, so we appreciate you bringing this to our attention, Julia. Our team will use your review to find ways to make your next visit even better. Thank you for helping us grow!
Expérience fantastique: They were so patient with my anxious protective dog. They could see through all that to her sweet loving nature. The doctor was so kind. Their care during and after her toe amputation and cancer diagnosis has been phenomenal.
Hi Christine. Almost all of our furry companions are sweet and lovely at their core. Most of our staff are certified Fear Free. It's great to hear the training is helping to make our patients' visits more comfortable.
Expérience négative: I did not have a great experience with Dr.Kailee Price. She consistently talked over me, insisted on excessive care and was very intrusive. I had to insert myself persistently and assertively to slow her down and organize a solution; which walking out to get a referral for dentistry work became a HUGE BARRIER. I couldn’t gather my thoughts, being consistently bombarded with 5-7 new prosecutes being recommended and reminded a handful of times on the “high costs”. I would not recommend seeing her if you want a more understanding veterinarian.
Hi Jessica, we’re sorry to hear that your appointment felt overwhelming and that you left without the clarity and comfort you deserve. Our goal is for every visit to feel collaborative, where clients feel heard, respected, and included in each step of their pet’s care.
We never want treatment discussions to feel rushed or intrusive. While our team aims to outline all available options so you can make informed decisions, this should always be done at a pace that allows you space to ask questions, process information, and feel confident in your choices. We’re sorry this didn’t happen during your visit. If you’d like to speak with us directly, please feel free to reach out anytime.
Expérience négative: I have been a client of McKenzie Vet for over 15 years . I have had nothing but top notch care for both my dogs (spent thousands of dollars there ) soon to be the next . Maybe. They had a mobile vet service that was great for my dog with anxiety , and now they no longer provide that service , either stressing my dog out by driving to the vet or now have to give medication which isn’t good for her. Additionally it takes forever to get a phone call returned or picked up because of the lack of staff- sometimes 2-3 days . Now I don’t know if that is the reason the mobile vet to be deactivated , but even getting a ueine sample in to be tested for crystals was even a challenge . It took 30 min to pay for a urine test dropped off today and the front desk lady wanted to put it in the fridge which you’re not supposed to do when testing and should be done within the hour . We have been ordered to give her special unitary food but they don’t carry the stock they used to ,and so we were forced to give her chicken which she is allergic to. This never used to be a problem with stock . I don’t know what has happened to Mackenzie vet recently , but for a customer who has moved to the Cowichan Valley who is still willing to do the commute , and still wants to be a customer , is seriously thinking about changing to vet that has proper staffing to answer phones , fill prescriptions , take walk ins and or answer questions etc. as this McKenzie vet has changed . I’ll give it to the next check up and if nothing has changed , regretfully I’ll have to take my business elsewhere and will no longer refer the many people I have to that establishment . Update: I have decided to leave after being a client for so long. Since the change over the cost of things have sky rocketed . We just adopted 2 dogs from the SPCA in Castlegar BC and thought we would give it another try . I saw Dr.Price as our normal vet was not on that day to see the 2 new dogs . Sadly I don’t feel they got a proper check up and felt rushed . Dr.price was aware these were rescues and we had only had them a month , yet kept asking questions like we had them since a puppy. I asked for their ears to be checked and the vet almost hurt one of my fur babies ears . I had said she needed a min as we had no idea what kind of trauma these poor pups went through , but she gave up and just said “ya , I think they might have an ear infection but I can’t tell.” I ask about their teeth and I’m told their fine with our male dog having a chipped tooth . This lead to a series of costs for things that were unessesary where as our current vet at that clinic would give alternatives with costs. Sadly customers were not told of the price increases to all the fees , so what I thought was going to cost me no more than $500 like it has been , cost me almost $720.00. I also had a credit on the system but since they didn’t add the dogs to our current profile (even after we said we had 2 join our family and to add them to our file), the credit was dismissed and told the new system doesn’t consolidate the files . Ever since this vet went corporate , it’s been a nightmare . So I called around vets in my area up island and found a privately owned company who charges far less . Bonus part their a hospital too ! For those reading , I encourage you to call around and support your local vet clinics, instead of letting corporations who aren’t there for your pets . Instead the corporations feed off your compassion for your animal and ask you to dig deep, because they know we will. The safety of our pets is number one , but our pockets that are otherwise not gouged ,allow me to spend it on more toys and fun places to go !
Hi Deanna,
Thank you for being a loyal client of McKenzie Vet over the years and for taking the time to share your concerns. We truly appreciate your trust in us and are sorry to hear about the recent challenges you’ve encountered.
Like many clinics, we’re currently experiencing staffing shortages, which have affected our phone response times and some of our services. We understand how frustrating this can be and are actively working on improvements.
We also want to acknowledge the discontinuation of our mobile vet service. This was a difficult decision made during the COVID-19 pandemic, and unfortunately at this time, there's no plan to reinstate the service.
Regarding the urine samples, refrigerating them when immediate testing isn't possible is a standard veterinary practice to help preserve sample quality. For prescription diets, while we do our best to keep the most commonly used foods in stock, some specialty diets may need to be ordered in advance. We encourage clients to reach out early to help avoid any gaps in your pet’s nutrition.
Your feedback is incredibly important to us, and we’re committed to providing the best possible care for you and your pets. If you’d like to discuss anything further, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Expérience fantastique: Everyone was super friendly and the cats appointment was super fast to get her blood taken.
Thank you for the great feedback. We are glad to hear that you had a good experience!
Expérience fantastique: Staff are caring and attentive. Knowledgeable and helpful pet care professionals. Small waiting area means you might prefer to wait outside after checking in, especially with large or reactive animals. But the waits aren't long, and you can see a lot of pets if you like.
Thank you, Heather! We strive to provide the best care and service to all our clients!
Expérience fantastique: Mckenzie Vet Services, what can I say? Wonderful. My friend Gilgamesh passed away today. He was so small, and yet the hole he has dug in my heart is so enormous. When I saw his nose looking rough two weeks ago, I called many of the vets around and found out none could handle Hamsters. If Dr. Fuller was not around my boy would have suffered so painfully his last days. She was so kind and attentive and understood how much Gilgamesh meant to me. She tried to save him, but his condition was too far gone. The NSAIDs prescribed gave him another good week, and a few more runs on his wheel. The entire staff was very kind and professional. I wanted to wait another week or two to say goodbye honestly, but Dr. Fuller was right and said it should be soon. Last night his condition was so bad, he could barely move and didn't want water or solid food. If not for Dr. Fuller he would have slowly died that way. and because of Dr. Fuller and the staff, my best friend got to pass away peacefully in my hands today. My thanks to them goes beyond words. Truly. I wish everyone there the best. I don't think I can handle the heartbreak of another hamster. But if I ever get Rats I would return there in a heartbeat. If by some chance someone has a hamster and they're unsure of their condition, call now, go immediately. I wish I had gone sooner. --- “My friend, stubborn as a mule, nimble as a donkey, swift as a panther — oh Enkidu, my friend, stubborn as a mule, nimble as a donkey, swift as a panther — We were the ones who joined together to scale mountains, who captured and killed the Sacred Bull, who vanquished Humbaba, king of the Cedar Forest. “So what kind of sleep steals you away now? Darkness cloaks you; you cannot hear me.” - Gilgamesh’s Lament for Enkidu (SB VIII.42-64, X.212-248)
We truly appreciate you sharing your experience with us. We understand that saying goodbye to a cherished pet is an incredibly emotional and challenging moment. Our utmost priority is to provide compassionate care during these difficult times. Your feedback means a lot to us and we're here to support you whenever you need us.
Expérience fantastique: Doctor MacNaughton is absolutely the best. She truly loves animals. She’s sooo calm and amazing with our very large and very anxious Bear. Her warmth and compassion for animals is top notch. I am so grateful for the loves she shows our big pup every single visit and phone call. I would recommend her over and over. Holly in the pharmacy is so so wonderful to. They have the best Team. The administration has been so wonderful to my kiddo and I. We love how personable they are! Thank you to everyone who’s help support us during his annuals and during his extra anxious times. Thank you all ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for your lovely review! It means so much to us that Bear was comfortable and had a good experience. I shared your review with the team and it made their day! Thank you, Suzanne
Expérience fantastique: My cat is an anxious kitty and has urinary issues. Mckenzie vet has always been compassionate and caring. I will only take my kitties here.
Thank you for your kind words and recommendation, Andrea! We understand leaving home can be stressful for cats. ⭐️
Expérience fantastique: Excellent veterinary care and services. Used the vet for over 4 years for our large dogs care and shots.
Dear Keith, your review touched our hearts. We're so grateful for your loyalty over the years and for entrusting us with your pets' care. We look forward to continuing our journey together!
Expérience fantastique: I've been taking my pets here for years now. They are incredible. They are knowledgeable, compassionate, and empathetic! Every one of my pets has LOVED coming here (even if they had major surgeries there, LOL).
Thanks for the 5 stars, Kat!
Expérience fantastique: My dog, The Mystery Machine, has hated the vet for almost her entire life she usually pees, kicks, growls and shows teeth and the worst she feels the worst her behaviour is. Today we went in for our first ever visit on an emergency meaning no "pre vet visit happy pills" and her first time seeing her new vet since we moved. I was terrified. We saw Dr. Fuller and I cannot say enough good things. She was compassionate, kind and understanding. She listened to our concerns and took the time to get to know mystery and her background and most importantly Mystery LOVED her and her staff. Not a single growl or kick she never whipped her head around she was the calmest I have ever seen her with a veterinarian before. Normally I am so on edge the entire vet visit but today I left knowing we have found our forever vet. Thank you Dr. Fuller for your amazing care. If you are looking for a new vet this is the place.
Hi Amanda (and The Mystery Machine), thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a thoughtful review! As fellow pet owners, we know how important it is to find a veterinarian you can trust with your furry family members. We strive to provide compassionate, high-quality care to all of our patients, so it means the world to hear we exceeded your expectations. Thanks again for the kind words - they really made our day!
Expérience négative: Issue with a pet's prescription not resolved after 3 weeks. Staff claims it is due to a recent change in their software. Poor communication between front staff, pharmacy and veterinary staff made for a very frustrating experience.
Hi Caroline,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I want to sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience you've experienced with your pet’s prescription over the past few weeks.
We understand how important timely medication is for your pet’s health, and we’re truly sorry that the issue wasn’t resolved sooner. A recent change in our software system has unfortunately caused some unexpected delays and disruptions in our workflow, and we recognize that this has impacted communication.
Please know that we are actively working on improving these processes and reinforcing internal communication so that issues like this don’t happen again.
We greatly value your patience and your continued trust in our care. If your pet’s prescription is still pending or if there’s anything we can do to help right away, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Expérience négative: I want to start by saying the reception staff and Dr. Mehic-Parker are phenomenal. The front staff are always so welcoming and Dr.Mehic-Parker was amazing with our dog. If based on that alone I would rate this place 5 stars. I have had other vets work with my dog and although I felt a little off about how they spoke to my partner and I, I wouldn't say they were horrible by any means. However, after the events of the past few months, I am sad to say I cannot justify coming back again. They overprescribed my bird antibiotics because the birds weight was inputted wrong. I get mistakes happen, but nobody even cared to admit or even tell me about it when it was found out. Further, when the giant dose of antibiotics didn't work, I was worried that maybe the problem was the crop infection in my bird was fungal or it was caused by something stuck in her crop. I made this concern known to the doctor with how the birds symptoms were at home and she kind of brushed it off (turns out it WAS fungal and was something stuck in her crop). She also made remarks such as "worst comes to worst, this wont be the only bird that can't fly" and shrugged when this bird was clearly having trouble breathing with a ball the size of a ping pong ball on her chest. After weeks of little help from McKenzie and the vet brushing off how serious of a condition my bird was in, I ended up having to take my bird to a lovely vet hospital (VCA Central Saanich) and despite best efforts to save her (they went above and beyond), she passed away on the operating table as her condition was too deteriorated at that point with popping air sacs from the pressure in her crop and weakened system. In the end, I didn't want to give a review with the amazing front staff but I wanted to warn others with birds and pets going in. I understand that veterinary is difficult and at the end of the day they can only do what they feel in their opinion is right. However, the events, mixed with the lack of care I felt was given, The lack of response to a clearly concerning and fast progressing problem, and knowing people who had similar experiences with their cat being given too much of a prescription making the cat sick, I don't feel comfortable using their services any longer. I wish them all the best and hope that others do not end up having the same experiences I did. For those with birds, I would recommend VCA Central Saanich instead.
Hi Rachel,
Thank you for your kind words about our front staff and Dr. Mehic-Parker. We're glad to know they made a positive impression, and we truly appreciate your feedback.
We are incredibly sorry for the loss of your bird and the experience you went through. We understand how heartbreaking this must have been, and we deeply regret that we did not meet your expectations during such a critical time.
The concerns you raised are very serious. We’re reviewing this internally to identify how we can do better.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Your feedback is being taken seriously, and we’re committed to learning from it.
Expérience fantastique: I cannot recommend this vet enough. My cat Randy has been here most days over the past few weeks and Dr. Fuller has been the absolute best with him as well as the techs in the back. Everyone here is the absolute best and I appreciate all the lengths they've gone to to ensure that my little boy is comfortable and well looked after! Dr. Bailey, I forever owe you for how amazing you've been to Randy.
Thanks for the kind words, Olivia! It's our mission to ensure that all clients and furry friends are provided high-quality care. We appreciate your recommendation. ⭐️
Expérience fantastique: I am absolutely just blown away by the service and care I received at Mckenzie Vet Services on Carey Rd. Incredible care, exceptionally knowledgeable and understanding. There were no hidden costs or shady practices and the end result did not in anyway exceed the estimate. My Darling Tufts is doing so much better and they took every precaution and then some to make it easier on her and I can't tell you how much I appreciate them. Special shout out to Dr. Fuller. She is by far the best vet I've had the honour of working with and I cannot express enough how much I appreciate everything she did for my little goober. The whole team are incredible, truly awesome folks but Dr. Fuller is honestly just the best vet I've ever met. 10/10, this clinic has my business for life. Thanks again folks! I appreciate ya'll endlessly and if she could understand the situation, so would my Tufts.
Wow, thank you for the amazing review, Aaron! We know your pets are like family so we work hard to treat each patient with the same love and care we would give our own. Hearing we succeeded in doing that for you is the best compliment. We're so grateful you took the time to share your experience. ⭐️
Expérience négative: Terrible Experience – Not Fear Free at All We chose McKenzie Veterinary Services after researching Fear Free vets, hoping for a positive first experience for our dog. Unfortunately, it was the exact opposite. From the start, the vet was visibly scared of our young hound, jumping nervously every time he barked, despite him being muzzled and showing no aggression. Even the receptionist was scared—we had to weigh him ourselves because she wouldn't approach him. The appointment lasted 30 minutes for a simple ear inspection, which the vet couldn't even complete. My girlfriend had to inspect and swab the dog's ear herself. After charging us around $140, they refused to provide a paper prescription so we could buy the medication elsewhere. I refused to buy their overpriced antibiotic, and honestly, I don't want to return because their approach wasn't "Fear Free" at all. In the end, we paid $140 for absolutely nothing. We could have handled it better ourselves at home. Avoid this place.
Hi William, We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we're sorry that your visit to McKenzie Veterinary Services didn't meet your expectations. Our goal is always to provide compassionate, fear-free care for every pet.
We value your feedback as it helps us improve. If you would be open to discussing this further, we’d love the opportunity to discuss.
Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we hope you’ll consider giving us another chance in the future.
Expérience fantastique: Barbara E. here… Dr. Ann Signorella at McKenzie Vet. Services is an outstanding professional. She is always caring, thorough, thoughtful, and informative when treating our dog Poppy. It is clear with each visit she cares deeply for the health of her patient and the service she provides her client. I recommend Dr. Signorella unreservedly.
Thanks for the kind review, James & Barbara! We are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed your experience with Dr. Signorella and look forward to seeing you again!
Expérience négative: I would not recommend this clinic for birds/avian veterinary care. A medication was prescribed for my bird without a full explanation of the risks or alternatives, and it ultimately failed to resolve the primary health issue. Despite my concerns about the treatment, they were not adequately addressed, even after contacting the medical director. To make matters worse, follow-up care was dismissive, and we were discharged as patients with the issue still unresolved. This experience has left me feeling unheard and frustrated. I had hoped for a more thorough and compassionate approach to my pet’s care, especially when safety and effective treatment were at stake. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this clinic. EDIT: After being in contact with the clinic’s team for the past month, no one has done anything to resolve this issue. Please save yourself some grief and do not go here.
Thank you for your feedback, Sophie. We take your concerns seriously and are addressing them offline. We understand the importance of clear communication and compassionate care, and we are committed to providing the highest standard of care for all our patients. If you have any further questions or wish to discuss your experience in more detail, we welcome you to reach out to us directly.
Expérience fantastique: Excellent care over the past 9 years for my two French Bulldogs. Frank, honest advice with no upsell on unnecessary procedures. Efficient service, easy parking, short wait times and caring bedside manner for the critters.
Dear Tasha, your review touched our hearts. We're so grateful for your loyalty over the years and for entrusting us with your pets' care. We look forward to continuing our journey together!
Expérience fantastique: Wonderful services!!! Our pets are a part of our family. We love them so much! And, MVS treats their clients with that in mind. They are kind, caring, and most importantly, good at what they do. I'm only giving them 5 stars because I can't give them 6.
Hi Ryan, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We know how important your pet is to you because we are owners ourselves and huge animal enthusiasts. We love what we do and reviews like this truly make our day! Thanks again!
Expérience fantastique: I am overflowing with gratitude for McKenzie Vet's staff, and especially to Dr. Paul, for their care and help with my ancient, ailing cat. Thank you for not giving up on Chai & his wellbeing, for your compassion, and for giving me another precious month with him - and for all the support before and after his passing. I will never forget your compassion. After 18 years of pet ownership, this staff has given me the best veterinarian experience I've ever had. McKenzie vet was recommended to me by my Mom, who had been taking her high-needs border collie there for years. As a new client, I brought my 18-year old cat with kidney disease and bad teeth in, and was treated with the utmost respect and care- none of my concerns were dismissed and I found the waiting room to be inviting and excellent for even the most nervous kitties. Dr. Paul Vega could see the writing on the wall, as could I, and his kindness and respect will stay with me for the rest of my life. Despite my cat's obvious signs of decline, he still gave my cat a through examination and found some issues that had not yet been addressed. He sent me home with new medications which worked amazingly for a month or so, and called to check in after a blood pressure follow-up. Unfortunately at that point these last measures met their match in his failing health, and he provided me with further resources over the phone to help me with the hard decision I was facing. Because my cat was in so much discomfort, and McKenzie was booked up on the day his health really took a hit, I ended up having to take him somewhere else to put him down- even so I received a beautiful, heartwarming sympathy card from Dr. Vega and the staff. I would recommend McKenzie to anyone, in a heartbeat. When it comes to pets, I have never felt so heard and cared for by a Vet and a clinic's staff. They're booked up for a reason. Thank you, McKenzie staff!
Dear Olwen, we offer you our deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved Chai. We know what a difficult time this is. Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your experience. We’re deeply touched by your appreciation for Dr. Vega and our team. We strive to provide compassionate and supportive care, especially during challenging times, and it's wonderful to hear that our efforts made a difference for you and your pet.
Expérience négative: DO NOT GO HERE. I took my dog here because we thought he had spear grass in his nose . We had to take him here because our normal vet is not open on Sundays . We took him in and explained to the vet what happened . When they took our dog into the office , a lady came in & literally didn’t even look at our dog . We told her the issue & she seriously told us it was going to be 800$!! To look into spear grass . We waited & took him down the street to Grace & they were shocked the vet at McKenzie said that . They checked him & cleared everything up for 130$. I read through the comments & even the people leaving nice comments say she’s a little pricey which is completely sugar coated. The main vet in this place is a complete scam artist . DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!!!
Hi Nic, We are sorry to hear about your experience and understand how frustrating unexpected costs can be, especially when your pet is in discomfort. Our team strives to provide thorough care and ensure all procedures are explained, including any associated costs. Different clinics may have varying prices due to the resources and equipment used during diagnostics. We are glad to hear your dog is feeling better, and we appreciate your feedback.
Expérience positive: Helpful, caring staff…but prices are a little high. We have been bringing our Guinea pigs here for a few years now. They do a pretty good job.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback, Daniel. We strive to provide 5-star care to all of our clients and patients. Please let us know how we can improve your experience during your next visit. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts so we can better serve you!
Expérience fantastique: Thank you to Dr. Reid Danielsen. He saw my senior dachshund ,Julian, today. He was so kind and knowledgeable. I have had many dogs and many different vet visits over the years. This one definitely ranks at the top.
Hello Lori, thank you for your fantastic review! We are grateful for this feedback as our staff prides themselves so much on providing this gold-star service! Thank you!
Expérience positive: This vet has convenient appointment times, and provide a lot of proactive care and advice. It's quite aways from my place, but they have been great, so worth it.
Thank you Shawn for taking the time to post a review. Please let us know how we can earn that 5th star on your next visit. We welcome all feedback!
Expérience fantastique: Dr. Bailey Fuller is amazing with our dog, she takes her time to be sensitive to his comfort and introduce him to herself, vaccines, the stethoscope, so he’s comfortable being touched and with everything throughout the visit. He loves going to the vet now, thank you!!!
Thanks for the kind review, Kate! We are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed your experience with Dr. Fuller. We look forward to seeing you and your pup again.
Expérience positive: I do like the clinic. Great doctor who I met. I believe the communication between the staff could be little better. As a client, I am not knowledgeable in medical stuff, if I have to explain things to each front staff multiple times chances are I might say something incorrect which may result in some mishappening to a innocent animal.
Hi Sid. We appreciate you leaving us a review, and we take them very seriously. If this review reflects any concerns that you may have please reach out to us and ask to speak to the practice manager. We always want to do our best for our clients and patients. Thank you.
Expérience fantastique: The staff at McKenzie were super accommodating getting my little guy in day of! We saw Dr.Fuller and she was absolutely amazing! Super friendly and super respectful of my budget, went above and beyond to help me with my budget, and gave Bear super great care! She was great at explaining what was wrong and the next steps! Will definitely be going back for any future appointments!
Thank you for your kind words and the positive review! We are very happy that you had a good experience with Dr. Fuller!
Expérience fantastique: Staff are kind, accommodating, gracious and patient, and upfront about wait times. When I brought my kitty in for a morning diagnosis and wound up having to wait for her to have a blood test, they arranged to keep her at the clinic so I could go back to work and take care of some tasks before coming back to pick her up in the afternoon. Concerns and treatment options were clearly presented, including different cost approaches, which was greatly appreciated. They also have a donation fund for low-income pet owners! All around a great experience for a stressful situation.
Thanks for the fantastic rating! We strive to make every visit a 5-star experience.
Expérience négative: Extremely unprofessional senior administration staff (Suzanne). Unapologetic for rude behaviour, price gauging. This is a profit based business with the goal of making money well above all other objectives. That is they try to get you to pay for extra services and add ons and if you don't they guilt trip you and make you feel terrible. When discussed with the manager she didn't even have the decency to apologize.
Hello Ashley. I'm sorry that you were not satisfied with our phone call yesterday. I did apologize that you did not feel you had a good experience and I did discuss it with the team, as I told you I would. Veterinary medicine is definitely expensive and we follow pricing guidelines laid out for us by our regulatory bodies as well as confer with other local hospitals, and we always have our patients and clients best interests in mind. I'm sorry we are not the right fit for you and I wish you the best. Suzanne
Expérience fantastique: McKenzie Vet has been taking great care of my 14 year old Frenchie Hilo since he was a puppy. Front desk staff are always friendly and accommodating. Dr Fuller is very professional and knowledgeable, she took the outmost care with my Frenchie. I highly recommend McKenzie Vet for all your pets needs!
Hi Dan, your kind words warm our hearts! Your loyalty for the past 14 years is truly appreciated. We can't wait to welcome you back soon for another great experience!
Expérience fantastique: McKenzie vet is great to deal with. They are always so compassionate and helpful. My dog is actually excited to be there when we pull into the parking lot.
Thanks for the kind words, Ashley! It's our mission to ensure that all clients and furry friends are provided high-quality care. We appreciate your recommendation. ⭐️
Expérience fantastique: I am so grateful I have found McKenzie Veterinary Services. If you have an anxious pet, this is the place to go!! Without shaming me in any way for my German Shepherd's vet anxiety, they worked with me to do a sedation protocol for her that enabled her to come in and have a comprehensive exam, even getting x-rays done. The team were so thoughtful even in scheduling my appointment at a strategic time of day so the vet, Dr. McNaughton, could spend more time with us because Penny (my girl) was going to take a lot of time to warm up and feel safe. I found the entire process, from waiting for the appointment, to seeing the vet, to liaising about our pet insurance and the bill, to be so compassionate and trauma-informed. They went above and beyond and treated Penn with the same warmth and tenderness I do. Very special place.
We're happy we could alleviate some of the stress during your pet's visit, Lauren! Our team works hard to create a calm, soothing environment. Thank you for recognizing our efforts to make each animal feel relaxed and cared for.
Expérience négative: I am writing this review with lots of emotions(unfortunately ). I wish I can give zero stars but I can't. Now to start off, I would say that my beloveded dog was....yes that's right was, no spring chicken. She was 16 years old I brought her in because she wasn't able to walk properly, and had one seizure, and wasn't able to keep water or food down. The veterinarian said that she was suffering from arthritis in her hind quarters. I haven't been to years and years of schooling, so I took her word for it She said that she would give the dog RX for the seizures and arthritis. We was going to put her down but she talk us into" keeping her just one more night". I thought that was strange that she'd say " you'll be able to have her for one more night". She gave her anti nausea RX and a injection for the arthritis. Then they sent us home with RX. At ten in the next morning we gave her, her first and last dose. I think you know we're I'm going with this. She was ok at first, she moved around in the bed and even drank some water. So we thought that the Rx was working fine. But then all hell broke loose. She had a couple of seizures in the morning. We called the clinic to see what we should do. They said come in later in the day paying an additional fee. We didn't wanted to do and instead hope to speak with a Dr. They took down my information and told us that they will have a Dr call us. Called us back to say that a Dr wouldn't be available that day, and will call us tomorrow. It is 11:16pm the next day and still no call back. Hindsight I forgot to mention that during the examination, the Dr. said that the seizures were due to old age, even tho she was just getting them. She continues to get seizures one after another to a total of at least seven. Asked for the Dr call us a could of times to no avail. Her condition gotten worse and worse to the point she was brain dead. We rushed her to the vet hospital and the nurse with only seeing her not less than 5 minutes said that she has a brain tumor. And that's why she was having seizures, not because of old age. How do we go from arthritis, to a brain tumor? If we had known that from the get go, we would have put her down long time ago . By the time we put her down, there's was no difference in her except that when she was put down she stop breathing. She was like a vegetable more or less most of the time. And that's why we decided to put her down In conclusion, I'm not impressed with the quality of care and support I was given by this clinic., and will never ever go to it again It's been more than three weeks since I've left this review, and still haven't gotten a response from anyone yet. Not a reply, email, or call. This should tells you how much they care about their customers (or former customer for that matter)!
We are very sorry for your loss Leroy, and I apologize that we have not responded to you in a timely manner. Our medical director is reviewing Jasmine's file and will be reaching out to you this week. Thank you.
Expérience fantastique: The vets here are incredible. I've been bringing my pets here for years through out the lives of my several dogs, as well as my cat Casper very recently. To back in the 80's and I had my 1st cat Spike. I have never had a bad experience here, for they have always been all about helping your pet. Thank you to all of the vets through out the years.
Thank you for such kind words and your commitment to our practice! We are happy we have been able to provide you with care for your babies over the years. We are truly grateful to have you as clients and to have gotten to know you and your pet so well over the years!
Expérience fantastique: I have been to multiple vets in Vic with my cat and this is the only place that has done so much for him. He most likely has feline cerebellar hypoplasia, and for Dr Durmuller to be so gentle with him and understanding of his capabilities, it was nice to have someone understand my situation. I recently moved and they helped me with some things via email which I appreciated as my phone signal is currently shotty at best. Thank you so much to McKenzie Vet staff!
Reviews like this remind us why we love what we do, Melissa-Anne. Providing excellent veterinary care is our top priority, so we appreciate you recognizing our efforts.
Expérience fantastique: The staff are kind, and the service is excellent. They take good care of your furry friends, no matter the situation. There was no upselling and no trying to give services that aren’t required. We adopted a new dog and her check up and 3 months of flea/tick medicine was very well priced!
Hi Perrin, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We know how important your pet is to you because we are owners ourselves and huge animal enthusiasts. We love what we do and reviews like this truly make our day! Thanks again!
Expérience négative: I was warned not to go here by a few different people as they usually just rush you out the door with big pharmaceutical drugs but I didn’t listen because they have a lot of good reviews. Took dog in for an ear infection which she’s had a few times in the past. They prescribed her drugs and sent us on our way. 2 days later she’s completely 100% deaf. The ear infection is gone but now she’s deaf and can’t hear a thing. I looked up the side effects and it says this drug is more risky for hearing loss for elderly dogs who take this medication. It also says the hearing loss is temporary and usually comes back so I waited 6 more days. Still nothing so I called the vet and got an assistant. They tried to blame the ear infection for the random sudden hearing loss but said they’d have the vet call me back when they aren’t busy to discuss options. Get a call next day from another assistant and again they’re trying to blame other things other than the stuff they prescribed where one of the symptoms is hearing loss and again said the vet will call back. A week later my girlfriend calls and again an assistant who said she’d have the vet call back. Nearly a month later still no call. Awful customer service for their clients. No answers on what to do. Will never come back here again. Poor dogs suffering the consequences now
Hello Mikey. I would like to be able to address your concerns but I need more information to access your pet's file. Please contact the hospital via email or phone and ask for the practice manager. Thank you, Suzanne
Expérience fantastique: The vets and staff at McKenzie Vet are the cream of the crop. So kind, so so so good with animals, so patient, and just make me feel at ease every time even when the appointments bring some difficult emotions. I'm so grateful for these humans.
We strive to make every client feel like family, so your thoughtful feedback means so much, Georgia. Knowing we have your trust and confidence motivates us. Thank you for taking a moment to share your positive experience - it truly made our day! ⭐️
Expérience fantastique: Everybody who works at Mckenzie Vet are absolutely amazing ❤️ My partner and I got 2 kittens (brothers) about 5 months ago, and everything from their first check up, shots, and their upcoming neuter, has been nothing but amazing. I am a first time cat owner and both the veterinarians we have seen here were very informative, non judgmental, and seem like they generally care for our little guys. Shout out to Brianne who is the most lovely person to chat with both over the phone and in person. We are so happy we chose Mckenzie vet and cannot wait for them to watch our little guys grow up!
Thank you so much for your kind words the 5 star review! We are honored to be a part of your families health care team.
Expérience fantastique: They were super friendly and helpful and able to squeeze me in a pinch when I had an urgent need end of day! I had called a few places and they seemed to be the friendliest and have the most fair pricing! I find some places take advantage of the fact that you’re having a pet emergency and make you have to choose between rent or your pet that day, similar to US health care McKenzie was great and although it was still pricey, it was worth it and reasonable with great service!
Thank you for the review! We are happy we were able to meet your expectations and help your pet.
Expérience négative: I am incredibly upset with the treatment my little chihuahua received at this clinic. This was his first time here to treat something that he suffers from a couple times a year - ear infections. He also was in for a look at a bump on his eyelid. His usual vet that treats his ear infections quite easily was unavailable so I decided to come here for the first time. My dog is snappy with strangers and terrified at the vet so he can be difficult to manage, but he was always in and out when being examined for his ears in the past with no issues. This time, during the appointment they had placed a rolled up towel around his neck to stop him from turning his head while they were trying to apply the medication. They choked him so bad he was grasping so hard for air and pee’d because he was so terrified. It was only when he shot out pee that they stopped restraining him so hard and he could finally breathe. Later that night he began aggressively coughing around 11pm and coughed all through the night, extremely loud and was grasping for air. He has NEVER had an issue with coughing in the past. I called my usual vet the next morning and explained what happened and wondered if the coughing was from the meds he was given but they told me he probably has a collapsed trachea… this is obviously due to how hard they choked him. I had to come in today so they could try to treat him for his ears after giving him more sedatives the day before (I’ve never had to do 2 appointments for any of his ear treatments in the past because of him being difficult). He still didn’t take to the sedatives and was very alert during the second appointment; despite this, the vet assistant today (different one than the day before) had no issue with his ears and did not need to restrain him at all like they did the day before. So this was clearly not needed. He now has a collapsed trachea due to excessive and unnecessary restraint due to this veterinary clinic. When I asked if they could take a look they said they were booked up and I should visit an emergency vet. I begged them to do something and they finally agreed to monitor him. They are now saying I have to book another appointment with them to have it checked out and pay AGAIN for a third appointment to now have him checked out for something they caused. He went in for his ear and eye and now he has a completely different issue. They tried to convince me that this is a pre existing issue… my dog nevet even wears a leash/collar because we have a big backyard for him to run around in. His throat was perfectly fine prior to this incident. The vet told me that if it goes away then it was likely caused from his appointment, if it stays then it was pre existing… doesn’t make any sense but ok. She also told me that it was pre existing because when she pressed on his throat he would cough and that it was inflamed… he was coughing all night and all the way in the car to the vet, OF COURSE it’s going to be inflamed. He has never ever coughed before and I have poked him in every spot on his body before, never had him cough. I’m now having such bad anxiety leaving him in their care since it seemed like they just wanted to get the job done and not actually stop and think that this is too much for his little throat. They should have tried a gentle approach like the way the different assistant did today before resorting to choking him. She was able to treat him without any restraint as per usual. I should trust that you will cater to his needs instead of using excessive and unnecessary force that didn’t even work anyways, it created a new issue. I do not recommend this place. I am distraught and I want some accountability and action taken for them injuring my poor dog. What is usually a one hour, one time vet visit, turned into now needing three visits and a completely new issue.
Dear Rachel, thank you for your time and your willingness to speak to me about your review. Patient and client care are incredibly important to our team and I assure you that your concerns and frustrations have been heard. If you would like discuss anything we did not cover in our previous conversation, please give us a call.
Expérience fantastique: Wonderful staff my Peep was the greeter before going for surgery. Thanks for your kindness in My peeps need of care and love. And mine too
Thanks for the 5-star rating, Denise!
Expérience fantastique: Just started, so limited experience with them. Still, they were organized, on time, had good systems in place, and left a good impression. Did a fine job of speaking towards the pros/cons of options for my cat. I'll be back
Thank you so much for your positive review. We appreciate the confidence in our team!
Expérience fantastique: Caring, informed, and compassionate. Less expensive than some other clinics because they can do blood work in-house. Discounted rates for nail trims if your kitty is non-combative.
Thank you for your lovely review, Heather!⭐️
Expérience fantastique: Our first visit was amazing. Our beagle had a great environment and felt comfortable. Dr Bailey Fuller was incredible. We have been to many veterinaries in various provinces throughout Canadá but she was outstanding. I would highly recommend Dr. Bailey Fuller. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about my second visit, where a vet technicians helped us but the experience was the oppossite of the first one.
Thanks for the kind words, Magno! It's our mission to ensure that all clients and furry friends are provided high-quality care. We appreciate your recommendation ⭐️
Expérience négative: Accepting new patients because they are the worst rip-off vet ever. Quoted me $2950 for some dental work only to tell me they made a mistake and it would actually be $3,500. Got the same work done at another vet for $800!!! Totally untrustworthy, no integrity. Will never go back...and they won't stop emailing me either.
Hi JP. Estimating for dental work is challenging because we can't know the health of the teeth and gums until the pet is under anesthetic and we have probed the teeth and taken x-rays. That is why we always estimate for extractions in case we find severe dental disease as we don't want the pet owner to be caught off-guard with a bigger invoice than expected. I'm sorry if that wasn't explained to you when the estimate was sent. If you would like to discuss this with me, or request your file be inactivated so you don't get further communications, please call and ask to speak with the Practice Manager. Thank you.
Expérience fantastique: I adopted an elderly cat from the SPCA, and, given his age and health concerns, he ended up visiting McKenzie Vet clinic quite frequently. He received excellent care there from all the vets he saw, and in particular we appreciated the support provided by Dr. Bailey Fuller, as well as Dr. Durmuller and vet tech Kamala. When my cat passed away the clinic sent me a card with thoughtful messages from each of the vets who treated him within the past while. I don't think many other clinics would take the time to provide such a considerate gesture of support.
Thank you for your kind words, Chelsea. You have our heartfelt condolences. We know how stressful that situation can be, and are glad that our team could make it a little easier for you. We sincerely appreciate your feedback. If you have any future questions, please feel free to give us a call.
Expérience fantastique: Thanks to the the vets and staff. They are friendly and helpful. I learned a few things about puppies today, thanks to Ann. All three pups are doing good. Thanks again. This is again a great place to take the fur babies. Took 5 pups in today and Dr. Fuller and her staff were awesome. Pups are doing great and they enjoyed their first visit to the vets office
Thank you for the kind words, John! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your experience and welcome you back anytime.⭐️
Expérience négative: I should start by saying that our experience with McKenzie Vet while our kitty was alive was really good. They were kind and compassionate, and they did house visits for our older kitty, which I really appreciate. The issue I really have is with their end of life care. Our poor cat needed to be euthanized at 20.5 years old. It remains a difficult and painful experience but the staff that came out to our home to help with this were kind and gentle. When they took he away I was comforted a little knowing that they were going to give us an imprint of her paw and we could keep that as a memory of our very long friendship. They said they would contact us when it was ready. Except they never did. We waited and waited and waited and I didn't know if I was supposed to call instead of them? When I did get fed up and email them in April (a month after the pandemic started) they said it was there. I couldn't get out until July - I think this is reasonable since it is a global pandemic. After all, who would throw something like that away when you know how hard it is for people to leave their homes right now? They tried to confirm contact information that wasn't ours (baffling since our contact information has been the same since we moved to Victoria and they managed to contact us before). They couldn't find it. The woman I spoke to said someone would call me. Nobody called (again) so I followed up. 'it will be two days'. Nobody called. I followed up AGAIN 17 days later. They finally admit it's gone. They threw it out. They disposed of it like it was garbage after not even telling us it was there to pick up to start with. I'm hurt and angry. It's bad enough that their policy says they would throw these out without even telling the owner. After I emailed them in April, they could have warned me of their six month rule. They could have emailed me at any time and instead just didn't. They dragged me along for weeks instead of just being honest. This vet is great while your pets are with you, but I would never again trust them with any future pets just because of this. I know it's just a pawprint but Ivy was in our family for 18 years and we loved her. I'm absolutely shocked an appalled that they'd do this.
Hi Christine, I am very sorry that this happened, and you have every right to be upset. I can't speak to what happened in 2019/2020, as that was before I joined McKenzie, but I can assure you that we have very strict tracking procedures regarding memorial items now. We understand how important they are, and I feel terrible you have carried this sadness for so many years. Warm regards.
Expérience fantastique: I’ve been going to McKenzie vet for about 20 years . Maybe more. The technicians are amazing, kind considerate. Dr. DurMuller is the BEST. She’s smart and even follows up if necessary . Truly she’s outstanding actually. Unfortunately, I was in today to try and order or pay for something that is I guess only avail on webstore or warehouse. The woman who helped me couldn’t have been less helpful. I stood and waited while a social exchange continued and I was interrupting. Then a mildly annoyed dreadlocked lady spoke so fast and was so unclear as to how I can order the product . I will probably order from my old vet all the way in alberta . That’s ridiculous.
Hello Sheree. Stocking every possible product that's out there is of course not feasible, so we have tried to make ordering through the webstore an easy way for clients to get exactly what they want. As I was listening to your exchange with our client care team member, I was never given the impression that you didn't hear, or understand what was being said, and if you had given any indication of such, I would have come out from my desk around the corner to help you. Giving us a poor Google review, instead of asking for better clarification on how to order an over the counter dental product, seems quite harsh to be honest. If there is something else that is actually upsetting you, I would be happy to call you and discuss it privately. We take great pride in providing the highest quality medicine, as well as customer service, and I take every review we receive to heart.
Thank you,
Suzanne - Practice Manager
Expérience fantastique: Dr. Fuller and Krystal were AMAZING with my two kitties, Antonio and Kuro. It was such a good experience all around, you can tell the staff truly cares about the well-being of all their animals and clients. I’ll continue seeking vet care with them :)
Thank you, Morgan! We strive to provide the best care and service to all our clients!
Expérience fantastique: i adopted a kitten from Pets West, and this was the vet that was assigned to my kitten through the adoption and I honestly couldn’t be happier with them. Little boots got Neutered and they called to check up on him which was fabulous and gave me a very detailed, easy to follow care instruction package. Every time I go there they are so kind and caring and you can really tell every staff member there cares deeply for your animal. I highly recommend them. Thank you Mckenzie Vet for taking such good care of my little guy.
Thank you Miranda for taking the time to leave such a kind review. We're happy to look after your little guy.
Expérience fantastique: The veterinarians, technicians, pharmacy, and administrative staff, are all such amazing people. Every time I go there, I feel like they truly care about my dogs. They go out of their way to provide exceptional care. Today I had Dr Bailey, their newest veterinarian on the team, care for my dog. I was blown away by the care she provided. I highly recommend her, or any of the other wonderful veterinarians that work at this clinic.
Hi Aviva, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We know how important your pet is to you because we are owners ourselves and huge animal enthusiasts. We love what we do and reviews like this truly make our day! Thanks again!
Expérience fantastique: I’ve always been so impressed with their service. Dr Signorella is extremely thoughtful and caring about my Guinea pigs. It’s so reassuring to know I have someone good to help my animals when needed. She also sees leopard geckos. She always listens to what I say really well and keeps everything on file. Reception is usually busy but they’re all friendly and kind. I had one of my boys with minor eye injury so I called them, and they were able to see us in under an hour. He’s healing well Also, Dr Stephenson-Hull is very caring. She was attentive and friendly with my dog, and she was able to diagnose quickly. Highly recommended! We will definitely be back.
Thanks for the kind review, Ayaka! We are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed your experience with Dr. Signorella. We appreciate your loyalty over the years and look forward to seeing you again.
Expérience fantastique: I will never not recommend this clinic! The staff are so caring and helpful, and Dr. Wilkening has gone above and beyond to ensure the health and comfort of my pets. I don't think I'll ever trust another clinic like I trust McKenzie Veterinary Clinic. I have had friends take their pets here as well and have all had overwhelmingly positive experiences. I'm so thankful to have access to a clinic this great.
Thanks for the kind review, Sydney! We are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed your experience with Dr. Wilkening. We appreciate your loyalty and look forward to seeing you again!
Expérience fantastique: Very friendly and helpful staff. Took great care of my cat, was wonderful and compassionate when my son had to bring in another one of our cats as it had passed. They even did our cats paw prints for my son and myself, which were lovely done too.
Thank you for the heartfelt review, Sarah. We are very fortunate to work with such a dedicated group of professionals that provide compassionate care to our clients and patients every step of the way. If you have any future questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call. Warm regards.
Expérience fantastique: I had one of the worst days in my life, unexpected, my precious Lily cat was struggling to breathe, she was 17. I took her here and was greeted with compassion and honesty by the vet. She advised me of all her issues and was very honest about her possible out comes. I was able to make an informed decision without pressure. I sadly had to say goodbye.. my heart is still broken but she is at peace. I received a lovely card in the mail signed by the staff, with loving thoughts. ❤️
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Shelley. It is always an extremely difficult time when we have to say goodbye to our furry friends. We are glad to hear that you appreciate our letter and we welcome you back anytime. ⭐️
Expérience fantastique: We don't live in Victoria but were visiting when our dog needed care. We were so lucky to get an appointment within 24 hours so our pup didn't have to wait too long in discomfort/pain. The issue was not truly an emergency - but not something that could wait a week, either. The staff on the phone and in person were excellent and the vet herself was exactly the right mix of compassion, getting the details and the science right for the animal + taking care of the human. Very happy with the service and the price was reasonable particularly since it was urgent care.
Thank you Anami. We are very happy we were able to help!
Expérience négative: Pushy vets for expensive treatments and medication regimes that do not solve the issues. Extremely unhappy with our dogs most recent visit there. We will be looking elsewhere to find a consistent and competent vet.
I am sorry that we have not met your expectations, and if you would like to reach out to me to discuss your concerns, I would appreciate that opportunity. Please call the office and ask for the practice manager. Thank you.
Expérience négative: My daughter and I chose McKenzie Veterinary Services for our family dog's euthanizing as we had used this clinic over the years for her shots. I was stunned at the treatment we received the dreaded day of the end of her life and am disgusted that humans working in such a sensitive area would be so absolutely insensitive during the termination of our beloved puppy of 14 and a half years. After little Bella received the first shot to calm her, a staff member entered the treatment room and asked for payment. After several attempts by one clerk at getting the machine to take my credit card, then my bank card, then my daughter trying, it was determined that the machine was non-functional. There was little Bell on the table, sedated and in need of comfort, and we were fumbling with payment. Then a second staff member came in with another machine interrupting our final moments with our pet, with yet another machine, which finally worked. It was GROSS. When I went to pick up her ashes I spoke with Suzanne, the new office manager, and she told me that payment is usually procured BEFORE going into the treatment room. Obviously these insensitive staff members FORGOT to do their job and made the most difficult experience of my 63 years of life even more difficult. I have been a registered nurse for 42 years and know that death can be done in beautiful ways. Instead of being able to lovingly be with my dog in her final moments, my daughter and I had to deal with these poorly trained individuals. For $500 + I definitely expected a more heartfelt experience. I would never recommend this clinic, and hope that others never have to experience the lack of humanity that these two individuals exhibited in the final moments of your loved one. As a response to your remarks Suzanne, our conversation behind closed doors was your valiant effort to EXPLAIN your staff's behavior but it does not EXCUSE it. Google reviews are about informing the public so that we can make decisions about which business' we want to support. I stand by mine. The treatment we received has ADDED to our grief, and as I see by other reviews, others have been treated similiarly. I am glad that you are working with your staff so that they can take responsibility for the service they offer, bad or good. Performance reviews are an integral part of my profession, and should be in yours.
Hello Lisa,
Based on the conversation we had, I am very distressed to see this review. I know the processing of the paperwork and payment was not handled they way we would like, but that should not take away from the care that we provided Bella over the past several years. Our doctors and staff work tirelessly to provide the best possible medical care to the pets in our community, and in this case, we fell short on the clerical side. I fully admitted that, and apologized to you in person. In a time when the veterinary community is losing staff to burnout, compassion fatigue and declining mental health, I felt it would be detrimental to ask the team members involved to call you and apologize, and I still stand by that. We have discussed it as a team, and strive to do better in the future. Suzanne
Expérience négative: I’ve always had tremendous respect for veterinarians. Having to diagnosis and treat patients without the patients being able to communicate their symptoms would be very challenging. Unfortunately McKenzie Vet priorities money over the well-being of their patients. My dog has been a patient of theirs for many years and had an annual checkup in April 2021. Just a few months later she was diagnosed with lymphoma at an emergency vet….. She had to receive weekly chemotherapy for months thereafter at Victoria Central Vet Hospital. I called McKenzie Vet to refill her flea medication and they insisted she needed to come for an annual checkup . My dog now has anxiety related to going to the vet and I don’t want to make her suffer by going to an unnecessary appointment. The vet technician I spoke with stated that veterinarians cannot legally refill a prescription if they have not seen the patient in 1 year and unfortunately it had been 13 months. I was not able to find this 1 year restriction on the BC college of veterinarians website and from what I gathered it is up to the discretion of the veterinarian to refill a prescription as long as they have “recent and sufficient knowledge” of their patient. Ie it’s not a 1 year limitation but rather a case by case situation. In my dog’s case, McKenzie Vet would rather force an anxious cancer patient to come to a redundant appointment so they can make a few extra dollars.
Hi Amanda. I am sorry we have broken your trust, and I would really like the opportunity to review this with the team. I do not see a file with your name in our system, so if you had a moment to call me with some more detail I would be grateful. Please call us and ask for the manager Suzanne. Thank you.
Expérience négative: My experience with this clinic over many years left me with the impression that it is unnecessarily expensive with poor diagnostic capabilities and morally grey disclosure policies. When I first started going to this vet with my late cat due to an emergency medical event (he had to have half of his tail amputated), the service was great. I had a vet that believed in alternative medicine and she would call just to check in on us. Somewhere along the way, she left, it declined and I cannot stress enough how terrible the advice I got was, and how much I paid for it in both tears and money. My cat ended up going blind because no one checked his blood pressure during several exams I took him for when I noticed some changes in his peripheral vision. Isn't that supposed to be basic? But they sure ran every other test they could think to bill me for, until high blood pressure permanently detached his retinas. Then they charged me $75 or something to check it after that. When he was diagnosed with kidney issues a few years later and had to stay overnight for an IV treatment, the bedside manner of one of the male vets was horrifying. He was very cold and clinical, and referenced a heart murmur diagnosis recorded on my cat's chart a year or two before, which I had never been informed of. I feel like this place kept me in the dark about Sid's actual decline in health. I can't decide if it was meant to spare my feelings or cost me more money. The last time I took him in, I paid $400 for an appointment where they told me he had about a month or two to live. He died that night. It took me nearly 4 years to get over Sid and that whole experience, but I finally adopted a kitten last month. When I called around for a vaccination quote, it was almost double the other clinics I checked with. I will not be going back to this clinic again, and wouldn't recommend it for cat owners. I've heard it's better for dogs.
Hi Maria. We never like to hear about experiences like this and are sorry for your loss. If what happened is as you described, we would have appreciated learning about it at the time so that we could have addressed your concerns. Unfortunately it is difficult for us to follow-up on events that occurred almost four years after your last visit, especially since the doctors you mentioned in your review no longer work at McKenzie, and ownership of the practice changed hands in 2016. Some conditions can be difficult to diagnose and require multiple tests to be run. We only run them if we think there is a benefit to doing so, and we get approval from owners before we do. Our prices for vaccines are comparable to other clinics. When shopping around, please be sure you understand what is included in the prices you receive (e.g. did they include the exam?) and be aware of what other services other clinics can offer if you need additional diagnostics or specialized equipment. I am surprised to learn that you've heard we're better for dogs than cats. We have many devoted cat clients and are certified a Cat Friendly Practice by the American Association of Feline Practitioners. We would love it if you would give us another chance and choose us as the care provider for your new kitten. If not, we hope you're able to find a vet that you trust with that responsibility.
Expérience fantastique: We had excellent care for our jack-russel dog Buddy!I really thought I was going it was his last car ride to the vets but DrWilkening fixed him up for us! We were so greatful to him and the rest of the team! We took him first to the emergency hospital and I pray we NEVER have to go there again!! Thank you once again Doc!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share these kind words. We are all glad that Buddy is doing well!
Expérience négative: My dog had a limp for a couple days so i booked an appointment on Monday to have him looked at, the appointment was for today(Wednesday) and he seemed to be doing a lot better before the apt, wasn’t whimpering or really limping much at all but i thought id take him to get a “professional” opinion either way, just in case. That was a mistake!! They charged me 800 for an xray of 1 joint, didn’t find the source of the issue and now he’s worse than he ever was. He cant even walk or stand up anymore when just this morning he was jumping and playing and seemed to be back to his normal self. All they had to tell me was that my dog was dramatic and that he should be on anti anxiety meds. Im sure they’re great with neutering and basic duties etc but if your pet has any real issues please consider other options. Im now out 800 and have to try and find another vet who can actually tell me whats going on. Will 100% never go back to this place or recommend it to anyone.
Hello Kyle. I am sorry to hear that Zeebo is uncomfortable today, and I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you about how we can help him, as well as discuss your concerns. I have left you a message, and I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
Expérience fantastique: Amazing! My dog needed a tooth extraction so we were referred to a dental veterinarian who quoted us $3,200 for the procedure. I asked around for recommendations on a good vet with good pricing and was recommended to Mackenzie Veterinary. He ended up having the same procedure for $1,900, and they took amazing care of our dog. I would 100% recommend them and I will definitely be taking him back.
Hi Meagan. Thank you so much for the positive review. We are happy that we could help!
Expérience fantastique: These guys are great! Had to make an emergency weekend visit to the vet and have been going back for all our pet visits ever since. The docs/admin are so friendly, great with shy animals. Great follow up after appointments.
We're happy to have been able to help with your weekend emergency C L and appreciate your return business. We love being able to establish an ongoing relationship with our clients and their pets.
Expérience négative: I will never use this vet again. We brought our cat there a couple weeks ago because he was in pain. They told us he had some crystals in his urine gave us a bunch of expensive food and medicine and sent us with a hefty bill then never checked in. 2 days ago he got very sick again. My wife made an urgent call to this vet to let them know what was going on and they said the doc would call back. 8 HOURS LATER my wife called them before they closed and they said well you better get him to the hospital. When we got there they said he was fully obstructed and had severe kidney damage and had to be put down. Even the hospital doctor was appalled no imagines were taken or further care was done. Now our young cat is gone and it could have been prevented by half decent care. Devastated
Hello Tim. Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your pet. This situation is of great concern and I would like the opportunity to look into it further. If you would like to discuss this further please call #250-727-2125 and ask for the practice manager. I cannot find a file under your name, so please provide the patient and owner information when you call. Thank you.
Expérience fantastique: My cat got sick and is gretting great care here. It's not cheap, but it's not McDonalds level of care, either. I've had questionable treatment elsewhere, but even my "scrapper" of a cat (not the sick one) is happy here and I've never seen that before. Obviously, doing things right by me and the cats.
Thanks Ted. We pride ourselves on providing quality care. It's great to get this type of feedback. We recently became an AAFP cat friendly practice. Maybe your scrapper heard the news.
Expérience fantastique: Easy, straight forward process and screening. Ample parking, clean and safe environment and friendly staff. Dr. Rae and her assistant were attentive, proper and professional bedside manners, empathic, knowledgeable, patient, took the time to listen and also provided treatment options for me. I highly recommend!
Awesome! Thank you very much lynn jane. We're happy to hear you had such a great experience. See you next time.
Expérience fantastique: Both the receptionist and the Dr. Durmuller were so kind and informative. The vet was so gentle, yet quick with my scaredy-cat. The exam was so thorough and never did I feel rushed through the appointment. I would definitely recommend bringing your furbabies here!
Thanks Mikayla! Cats definitely require a different kind of love and handling. I hope your scaredy-cat comes to look forward to visiting us.
Expérience fantastique: Dr. Stephenson-Hull and the vet techs are AMAZING! She helped us a lot when our previous pup was heading towards the rainbow bridge. With our newly adopt pup, Dr. Stephenson-Hull is very detailed with our visits and is very personable!
Thank you for the praise Mandart. We'll be sure to pass your compliments along to Dr Stephenson-Hull.
Expérience fantastique: I was blessed to get a same day appointment for my constipated cat when my regular clinic couldn't get him in. All the staff I met were friendly, compassionate and competent. They took adequate time to address my concerns and go over cost and treatment estimates with me. The facility is clean and bright and doesn't smell like animals or cleaning solutions. I found that the prices charged for his assessment, treatment and medications to be quite reasonable. They took great care of my fuzzy baby and I'm so happy to have him back home and feeling better.
We're glad to have been able to help you out Jen, and appreciate the thanks. It's great to hear your fuzzy baby is feeling better.
Expérience fantastique: We have been bringing our cats here since we moved to Victoria and this is by far the absolute best vet we have ever found. They are so loving and caring towards our fur babies, and they are so patient with all of my questions. They even did a follow up for no cost after I was worried about her incision after being spayed. Everyone that works there (front desk, techs and vets) all truly seem to care about my animals and that is so comforting. I am super grateful that we found them and would recommend them any day! Thank you McKenzie Vet staff!!
You are too kind Megan. Thank you so much for the compliments.
Expérience fantastique: All of the people we have encountered at McKenzie vet have been great. Dr. Wilkening in particular went above and beyond for us and our doggo after a surgical complication. We’re so grateful for all the help!! Thank you!
Hi Genevieve. We're glad that everything worked out well, and will be sure to pass along your compliment to Dr Wilkening. Thanks!
Expérience négative: I've been coming here for about 2 years. My first couple of visits were wonderful. After that it has been a hit or miss. Their customer service definitely needs improvement. Edit: in regards to your comment, maybe train your staff so the customer service can be more consistent. It's specifically the lab techs that have been rude on more than one occasion. Hope that helps.
Hi Veronica. We would be grateful if you'd share the details of your poor experiences. We never like to hear that a client was dissatisfied. Please feel free to let us know where you think we can improve.
Edit: In response to your additional comment - it would be more helpful if you were to call or email the clinic. We welcome constructive feedback and would like to hear from you. It is much easier for us to make improvements when we get details about a client's negative experience. Trying to have a conversation inside of a Google review is difficult.
Expérience positive: We were clients, but followed our veterinarian when they left the practice. The vets we saw were always great, but the front end staff was far from great. We also had mix ups with prescriptions on two separate occasions. We had a prescription for caninsulin (for diabetes) , but given cartrophen (an anti inflammatory), on a second occasion our prescription for Felimazole was for 2.5mg, but we were given 5.0mg. SO MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOU PRESCRIPTION
Hi Adam. I am sorry to hear about the mistakes that you experienced when you were coming to our clinic, and agree that prescription mix-ups are concerning. We have not had a veterinarian leave our practice since December 2019, so I imagine it has been close to two years since you visited us. I can assure you that a great deal of work has been done training what was previously a very new Client Care team. They are a great bunch of people, and I am confident you would be impressed with the service you would receive if you had occasion to visit us again.
Expérience fantastique: The team at McKenzie Vet is amazing. Truly best in class veterinary care. There is sometimes a short wait for appointments or to make payments etc, but it's because the staff do such an amazing job making sure each client's needs are met and questions are answered. Dr. McNaughton in particular is incredible and treats our pets with such care. We really love and appreciate this place!
Thanks for taking the time to share your kind words with us Jordan. We love hearing feedback like this. I'll make sure to pass along your compliments to Dr MacNaughton. We think she's incredible too!
Expérience fantastique: Amazing service and staff. I booked an appointment last week for 3 puppies for their first visit! I was given lots of information from the vet and great communication! Amazing people!
Hi Jenna. Sounds like you've got your hands full (of cuteness)! Thanks for choosing McKenzie to care for your pups.
Expérience fantastique: Our dog, Kuper had a tooth abscess and needed an extraction. After our regular vet told us that the earliest they could help her would be 4 months away we started phoning around. McKenzie Vet Clinic we’re able to get her in within a week. All the staff and the doctors were great! Clear communication and very friendly and helpful. They treated our little girl like family, even calling the next day to see how she was doing. Highly recommend!
We're glad we could help Kuper out. I'm sure she feels much better after getting her tooth extracted. Thanks for choosing us to provide the dental care she needed.
Expérience fantastique: Our experience at McKenzie Veterinary Services has been extremely positive and we feel that our puppy’s care is in very capable hands. At previous clinics, we felt that the veterinarians did not have time to answer questions and were looking for any opportunity to nickel and dime us with unnecessary testing. At McKenzie Vet, our experience couldn’t be more different. Dr. Wilkening has been extremely helpful and we feel very confident about his treatment plan for our puppy. We appreciate the amazing staff and their commitment to ensuring that our nervous puppy is as comfortable as possible during his appointments. Thank you to the wonderful staff at McKenzie vet and we would highly recommend Dr Wilkening to anyone with a furry family member!!
Thank you for the compliments Hilary. We'll make sure your kind words are passed on to Dr Wilkening. We are happy to make sure your pup's trips to the vet are as stress-free as possible.
Expérience fantastique: Incredible care, they truly treated Felix as if he was their own. ❤️ I can't thank them enough for the love and compassion he received in their care. I never had to worry if he was sad or lonely while there. Thank you for everything!
Hi Colleen. It's so great to hear Felix was comfortable during his visit. It was our pleasure. Thanks for the acknowledgement.
Expérience fantastique: McKenzie vet, is a great vet. I had brought my cat in when she was sick. They were able to take her in right that same day. The vet was clear with me and didn't hide a thing. A different occasion with a different cat, I needed him to been seen rather sooner than later and again they were able to see him same day. It was a good experience as well. I would recommend this place to other people with their fur babies, absolutely. *Edit* I did have a vet for my first kitty ( didn't own 2nd cat until later ) but when I needed to take her in to see a vet ASAP, Mckenzie vet was referred to me. This is when I called Mckenzie up and they were able to help me out that same day. My second cat didn't have a vet at that time. Since I had great experience with McKenzie I called them up for my second kitty. So now he will remain with them. I am happy to change my 4 star to 5 Mckenzie Vet keep doing the amazing job you guys do.
Thanks for the positive feedback Sara. We always try our best to accommodate pets that require urgent care. Happy to hear we could help your cats out when they needed us. Our goal is to provide 5 star service. If there is an area where you believe we can improve, we'd love for you to drop a line to [email protected]. Maybe we can persuade you to bump your rating up to 5 stars.
Expérience fantastique: Mckenzie Vets are always amazing! Dr. Tania Durmuller took amazing care of our cat, Boston today. Mckenzie vet staff got our boy in quick for an emergency, painful abscess and took great care of him in a very short time! He looks and feels so much better! Thank you!
Thanks Angel! It's awesome to hear Boston is already feeling better. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know.
Expérience fantastique: The vets at McK Vet Services have looked after our dogs for quite some time. When Chloe was sick they were so compassionate when she was at the end of her life. They are now taking care of Holly our 3 1/2 yr old Aussie shepherd/border collie. She is overweight and they are working with us to set her up on a weight management plan.
Thanks Carrol! We are grateful for you choosing us to care for your girl when it was time to say goodbye and that you are now bringing Holly to see us. It's great to hear that you are taking advantage of the nutrition consultations we offer. Diet is a major factor in overall health and we carry a wide range of the best products available. Our Nutrition Advisor Alli is very knowledgeable, and is dedicated to keeping herself up to date through regular continuing education. I'm sure she can help Holly achieve her weight loss goals.
Expérience fantastique: I am so fortunate to have such a caring group look after all of my sweet girl Bella's needs. The staff knew that she was crate fearful and cuddled her through all of her stays. Dr Patterson is never too busy to talk through all of my concerns and continues to put me at ease , Your pet will always come first.
Thank you Terry. We'd really like to get your rating up to five. If there is anything you think we can do to improve, we'd love to hear your feedback.
Expérience fantastique: Such a kind, great staff. If I have to spend a bunch of dollars on vet bills then I sure as hell want the folks working there to be nice. You guys rocked it with both our animals, Yoda and Oz. Thanks again Everyone....and I mean everyone.
This is so great to hear. Thanks Chris. It means a lot that you took the time to send some kind words our way.
Expérience positive: Have dealt with this bet service for a number of years. Have had great car and compassion from the techs and vets on staff. We adopt older rescues with all their medical problems and they have been wonderful, helping diagnose and treat all sorts of problems. They have been very compassionate in their care and offer office as well as in home appointments.
Thank you very much for the compliments Jeannie. Please let us know if there is anything you think we can do better. You can always let any staff member know or drop us an email. We want your experience to be five star.
Expérience fantastique: Wonderful doctors and staff who take such exceptional care of our Boston Terrier Lola ♥️ who suffers from Idiopathic Refractory Epilepsy! The staff go way above the call of duty with their clients. Highly recommended !
Thanks Jannette. We appreciate the kudos. Happy to help.
Expérience fantastique: This is truly the best vetranarien in Victoria. Very caring, great communication. It took me 2 other vets to finally find Dr. Wilkenings and he is awesome. Thank you guys for helping us.
You are very welcome Caleb. Thank you for the kind words. We'll pass them along to Dr Wilkening!
Expérience fantastique: We started using the clinic a few months ago with our shnauzers. We have one special dog that they have been very patient with and he does well with the kindness. Our other schnauzer is a senior and they have been very helpful with his care. l. We are happy to continue using this clinic and highly recommend it.
Thank you Teri. We're happy that we've been able to care for your special guys. Almost our entire staff was recently Free Free certified. Glad to hear it's making a difference.
Expérience négative: I'm not one to write bad reviews. I believe in giving the benefit of the doubt. At this clinic, I know that they have some excellent doctors it their service is by far the most disrespectful and increasingly expensive service that I've ever had to endure. Since their recommendation to put my dog on a medication that may cause seizures, my dog has been having seizures. They are now charging us for treatment for seizures. We have been told that we would be called back multiple times without success for several incidents that we were extremely anxious about. We never get a call back. We have had to call them and then we get charged $125
Hello Byran. We checked your dog's records. The only time seizures were mentioned prior to this month (Feb 2021) was in January 2015. At that time the tests that were run were normal. You were given reference material regarding seizures and asked to let us know if they occurred again. You had 10 appointments between Jan. 2015 and Dec. 2020 and there was no further mention of seizures, despite doctors asking if their were any medical concerns other than the skin issues that were being addressed. At your last visit we were told your dog has been having seizures and that they are increasing in frequency. She was taken off the preventative you referenced as a precautionary measure; we do not believe the medication is the cause of the seizures as the first time the meds were dispensed was Mar. 2016, over a year after the first seizure was mentioned.
We followed up with your wife yesterday to discuss the review that you left as she is the only person we have on the file. The information above regarding the seizures was discussed with her. She mentioned that since we have had to follow COVID protocols she has been left waiting outside because she does not have a car, sometimes for a significant amount of time. She also said that she was emailed about setting up an appointment instead of being called. We are sorry for both of these issues. COVID protocols have made things much more difficult, especially when things get busy. There are occasions where a check-in text has been missed. We apologized to your wife for missing her text and asked that she texts again, calls, or comes to the front door where we can help her if we do not reply quickly to her initial text. We let her know that since she comes without a car she is welcome to wait inside if the weather is bad. Notes have been made on her file to that effect.
I am not sure what your comments about lack of call-backs are in reference to as they are not consistent with our records. Nor do I understand what your last sentence is about. There are no charges I can see that are abnormal. As far as pricing, our policy is to base our prices off of the CVMA's suggested fee guide.
If you or your wife have any future complaints about the service you receive from us please feel free to reach out to us and let us know. We always act on concerns raised by our clients and never want to hear anyone is dissatisfied.
Expérience fantastique: We have been going to McKenzie Veterinary Services for almost 8 years and we are so pleased with the care our two dogs have received. Dr Rae and her staff go out of their way to help us support our nervous dog during her visits. They give her extra time to get settled in the exam room, make sure she has a clear entry and exit from the exam room and they move quickly and calmly to make sure that she is comfortable for check ups and vaccinations. As a result, she absolutely loves going to the clinic and getting to see them! And so do we! Our young dog needs no help loving people... and I greatly appreciate the staff immediately adjusting their enthusiasm in order to help him learn to be calm for exams. All of the veterinarians we have seen at McKenzie Vet have gone out of their way to help us when we have questions or need clarification.
Thanks so much Anne. We love that your dogs enjoy coming to see us. We have been putting a dedicated effort towards keeping pets as relaxed as possible. In fact, all of our doctors and 30 support staff just became Fear Free Certified Professionals at the end of December! It's nice to hear our efforts are appreciated.
Expérience négative: Disorganized, and unprofessional. Went in and was treated poorly and continuously belittled and mishandled the situation. Please check in with your employees and maybe take a class on being respectful of customers feelings. Had no compassion for the us. For it being my first time personally i will not being bringing my animals here anything in the future. Definitely not worth your time.
Sorry to hear you were so unhappy with your visit Nicole. We'd appreciate it if you would contact us and share the details of your experience so that we can try and address your concerns. We want our clients to be completely satisfied, and when we receive feedback like yours we always use it as an opportunity to see where we can improve.
Expérience fantastique: We trust our beloved cat Nakita's care [18 yrs old] and my daughter's amazing certified service dog Brite's care to the good Doctors and caring staff at McKenzie Vet Services. Last year they showed such care and compassion when we had an emergency with Nakita's daughter, 16 year old Stella by Starlight who sadly had suffered a heart attack and was dying in our arms. It was one of our most pathetic days and the staff and doctor comforted both Stella and us making her passing quieter and more gentle. They offered us many options for her after-life care which was very helpful. Very respectful crew. Thank you. Bless you all for the work you all do!
Thank you for taking the time to let us know what a difference the care you received made for you and your family. End of life is a difficult time for any pet owner and it makes us proud that we were able to provide the support you needed. We look forward to seeing Nakita and Brite the next time you visit.
Expérience fantastique: Ive been going to this place for 5 years now with my rats. They have seen nearly every of the 10 boys I have and had through the years. I have absolutely no complaints, I won't be going anywhere else as long as Dr. Wilkening is there. It was probably the worst news I could have received but In the best possible way and he offered solutions and ideas right away. He had a plan, was comforting and answered every question I had with great detail. Everyone you come in contact with are total sweethearts and genuinely care about you and your pets, they're also doing a FANTASTIC job with covid protocols ensuring everything is safe. A wonderful clinic full of wonderful people. Keep up the great work, thank you for being kind souls.
Thanks for your kind words Nicole. We're happy Dr Wilkening could help you through your difficult time and appreciate the compliments very much.
Expérience fantastique: Words cannot express how amazing this vet is. My dog savannah was extremely sick and they did everything in their power to help me knowing money was extremely tight, but my dogs are my daughters. When nobody else would help me, they were there, and they truly cared about my dog. They went above and beyond in performing her procedure and where other vets were going to charge me more than double, they did their absolute best to not and they worked with me to make it work while easing my fears. Knowing my situation they did absolutely everything in their power to save my dogs life, and because of them she came out of it perfect. I will never go anywhere else. I have two dogs and two cats and this is the only place I trust for them.
Wow! Thank you so much for the compliments. We love to hear about these types of success stories. We are very happy that everything turned out ok and look forward to seeing you and your furry family soon.
Expérience négative: My dog had surgery and I was to pick her up at 5:15 pm. I was left hanging in the parking lot for 40 minutes with no response to texts or phone calls. In fact initially I called and was told I had to text, then they stopped answering the phone as well. The only reason I got paid attention to after 40 minutes was because I saw the vet (who was fantastic) going home for the day and hollered at him. He then went in & told the staff I was in the parking lot. The office staff were not even remotely apologetic, told me I should have come to the door (although all signage says not to due to covid), that they knew they still had patients there and they had a line up / were short staffed. They then said I should take it up with the owner. Completely unacceptable, they clearly need more office staff and the ones there need some serious training. It's too bad because I had every intention of using this vet going forward because of how great the veterinarian was.
Hi Jacquie. We are very sorry you were left waiting for such a long time. This was definitely an oversight on our part. I am also disappointed to hear about the way you were talked to and agree it was unacceptable. We have addressed this with the staff members involved. The additional demands created by COVID are a challenge for everyone right now. We have done our best to continue providing care throughout the pandemic in a way that keeps everyone safe and happy. It appears that in your case we fell short and I sincerely apologize. Please know that this is not a common occurrence and we do pride ourselves on providing the best care possible for our community.
