Fantastic experience: 4 Paws took exceptionally good care of my sick cat Sam over two days, providing all the tests he needed, not charging for repeated tests or consults, getting him well quickly, treating him like he was the special fella he is, staying in touch with us, and even brushing him beautifully. I couldn't recommend them more highly. Really nice vets and staff in general.

Fantastic experience: I have never felt so ripped off in my life!! My dog has a UTI and I brought her there for antibiotics, The cost was $466. They did not tell me that on top of the pills that were $62.36 plus tax for 7 pills and the urinalysis that was $168.07 plus tax that there was a mandatory exam that lasted 3 minutes and cost $179.20 plus tax. Had I known the cost upfront I never would have agreed to it. Those costs should be disclosed. The woman who called me back could not have been anymore condescending saying she was sorry I felt that way. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place unless you want to feel robbed.

Positive experience: I loved this vet for emergency surgery that my dog requires a few months ago, recently he began to act not himself so I rushed him in again. They did bloodwork and he was positive for Tick borne disease and that more blood sample required to be sent away to tested. This was on a Sunday and should have heard results back in 2 days. I called 2 times during the week and was told "the first part came back but still waiting for the rest" The following Saturday night I got a call stating that "we have lost or misplaced his bloodwork" and that we need to bring him in again on Monday for another blood sample to be sent away, got those results back in two days. I was not impressed at all!

Negative experience: The\n Cave My cat that couldn't they give him animal, they couldn't get it out of him. They sent him home 8 hours ago, so stoned out of his head, he's bouncing off the walls. He is staring into nothing and this cat, 9-year-old cat who's never been sick in his life. I'm just really disappointed that he is still out of it like I am absolutely Shaken to my core so they want me to give him pain meds, not on his life of my giving him any male pain meds, whatever they gave him today. I mean it has scared me, so just be aware and I will never take him back there even though I do appreciate the fast service it. Took 4 hours for them to tell me they couldn't help him. I'm going to give him his liquid to help him have softer stools. But wo.\n W I've never seen an animal or a human being that out of it in my life, because he's never been sick, and they just really, really dosed him,l really well, and I don't know when he's gonna come down, he's staring into space, he's trying to go. To the bathroom 3 times I've had to carry him to the litter box. He can't stand up straight anyway. That's my 2 cents.o

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re very sorry to hear how distressing this was for you and we understand how upsetting it can be to see your cat acting differently after a visit.

Sedation and medications can sometimes affect pets more strongly or for longer than expected and reactions can vary from animal to animal. Our goal is always to keep patients as safe and comfortable as possible while determining the best next steps for their care.

We appreciate your concerns and welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly and address your concerns.

Fantastic experience: Huge appreciation to 4 Paws and Dr. Porter for the amazing care they provided to my (now) diabetic cat. Dr. Porter went above and beyond ... truly ... up and down making sure everything was checked so that I can celebrate more birthdays with him. Her dedication and compassion mean more than she knows. To newcomers to Canada: please learn from my experience and get pet insurance early. It wasn’t common where I come from, and I didn’t realize how important it is here until my cat became older and uninsurable due to pre-existing conditions. If I had known sooner, I would have done it right away, it really does make a difference.

Negative experience: It feels like these people, including the vets, are just salespeople. Every time I am in there they are always trying to sell me something. They also refuse to do anything without an exam and charging an exam fee even if the pet has been in recently. Their prices are also outrageous. For example the exam fee alone is $180.00!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, Keegs. We’re sorry to hear that your recent experiences have left you feeling this way. Our goal is always to recommend care and services that support each pet’s health needs and exams are an important part of ensuring we have the most accurate and up-to-date information before proceeding with any treatment or medications. We understand that veterinary costs can feel overwhelming at times and we do our best to provide transparency around fees and options whenever possible. Please reach out to the clinic if you would like to discuss further.

Negative experience: We took our female dog to this hospital over the weekend because she wa showing symptoms of UTI 3 weeks ago. We paid around $500 for the urine analysis plus the vet and a course of antibiotics for 1 weeks. After the antibiotics were completed, she started showing symptoms of UTI again and hospital asked us to pay for another urine analysis, which of course we did ONLY to be told that she was still have UTI (wow what a surprise— we already TOLD THEM THIS) and told we had to pay for pay for culture as well to see what else found in the urine. Meanwhile We were prescribed for another round of THE SAME antibiotics for 1 week, (total $500) telling us that the result of the culture would be received on Monday (we did the 2nd urine analysis on Sat). Monday came and no news, we called in, and they said that it would be on Wednesday. Wednesday came and no news. We called again and we were told that they had not received the result yet. On Friday, we called again and they said they had sent partial result to our primary vet as their on vet was busy so we could also call our primary vet! We paid this vet and NOT our primary vet. They are busy which is great but we already paid money for the service! On Sunday today, we finally received a call from the vet on the result that there is E-coli bacteria and the best course of action is to get the $212 injection. We of course opted for the best as our dog has been through so much at this point. It is very upsetting that this hospital is taking advantage of pet parents. They could have told us to just pay for the culture instead of paying 2 urine analysis!!! I hope other 24 vet hospitals are not like this one. I hope the management of this establishment reads this and give me a call about this because when I asked to speak with them, we were told that they’re not in.

4 Paws Veterinary Hospital
4 Paws Veterinary Hospital

Hi Marcella, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We understand how stressful it can be when a pet’s symptoms persist and we regret that this process felt frustrating. When urinary tract infections recur, additional diagnostics, such as urine culture, are often recommended so we can identify the exact bacteria present and prescribe the most effective treatment. While initial antibiotics are prescribed based on common causes, a culture provides more specific information if the infection does not resolve.

Regarding lab timelines, results are processed through external laboratories which can sometimes lead to delays outside of our immediate control. We do our best to keep clients updated as information becomes available. Please know that our recommendations are based on providing the most accurate diagnosis and best course of care, never to add unnecessary costs. If you would like to discuss your experience further, we encourage you to contact our management team directly so we can review your pet’s case in more detail.

Negative experience: Our usual vet called in sick and scheduled us here instead. Our 16 year old dog just needed his ears plucked and cleaned (because of ear infection) under sedation because of his high anxiety. The vet here decided not to follow the treatment plan of our usual vet and would not sedate him. Because of this, as they were trying to hold my dog down as he tried to get away they hurt his front left leg. Now my baby is inconsolable, limping and crying around the house. He won’t sit down or let anyone touch him. This vet made my dog feel WORSE. They should have followed the treatment plan outlined by the vet who’s treated him for years rather than thinking they knew better. Worse, they charged us as if they’d sedated him.

Fantastic experience: I’m writing to express my gratitude to staff and dr today at 4 paws vet. Since leaving the clinic 12 hours ago Dior is 1000% better. Thank you very much for the care and love you show animals and how comfortable you make people feel. Positive experience: The vet techs at 4 Paws were kind, gentle, and clearly care about animals. I really appreciated that they were able to fit us in quickly during an urgent situation. Medically, they provide solid veterinary care. Every time I’ve brought a pet to 4 Paws, the treatment itself has been good. That said, the reason my review is on the lower side is due to poor communication. During this visit, the focus felt more like repeated sales pitches for prescription urinary brands and diets, specifically Royal Canin, Purina, and Hill’s, rather than a clear conversation about my cat’s individual needs. I explained multiple times that he had previously been on those brand’s urinary diets and developed serious gastrointestinal issues that required vet care as a result. Still, I was advised to try them again four separate times during the visit, including being told to look for a hypoallergenic version, which they didn’t carry. I said I would follow up / get it from my regular vet instead. Communication about his care plan was also lacking. I was told to leave him for monitoring and a urinalysis due to suspected crystals. I dropped him off at 8:00 AM and stayed until about 11:00 AM. I called for an update at 1:30 PM and was told the vet had not yet seen him. That was concerning, considering how dangerous urinary blockages can be. But I tried to be understanding as they are an emergency vet. Granted being told via phone no one had checked on him at all was upsetting. I didn’t hear anything further until 3:30 PM when I was told to pick him up and the vet gave me an overview of what was done via phone. That communication was good- clinical but pretty informative regarding what was found. Discharge instructions when I picked him up were minimal, the vet tech was super nice and told me how to give the medications, and if he had reactions to bring him back. But I wasn’t given any information about what to expect during recovery, what to watch for, or when to follow up. I had to look all of that up on my own because I was too overwhelmed to think in the moment. That part was just as much on me but I wasn’t exactly thinking properly because I was worried about my cat. Four days later, I received an email from my primary vet saying 4 Paws had recommended a follow-up urinalysis. That was never communicated to me directly. If my regular clinic hadn’t reviewed the records and reached out, I would not have known to book it. The last time he had crystals was over five years ago, and I don’t recall needing a recheck at that time. Maybe I did and j have just forgotten, I don’t know. But when I called 4 Paws to confirm, and then adk why it wasn’t mentioned, they didn’t give a clear answer. Instead, they used the call as another opportunity to suggest one of the same prescription diets again. 5 times is excessive, especially after I already said I’d reach out to my regular vet to get the hypoallergenic one. I’m thankful they helped my cat and that he’s doing well now. I just don’t understand how an important care instruction, like scheduling a follow-up urinalysis in 2 to 3 weeks, was never mentioned to me directly, but meanwhile the prescription food was brought up five separate times. It makes me wonder if that detail would have been missed had I been a regular client and was scheduling my follow up with them, and had left me feeling like sales were prioritized over my cat’s care. I honestly wouldn’t even be writing a negative review, but the fact I wasn’t told to schedule a follow up and when called to confirm/ ask about it had it turned back into a sales pitch upset me.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback, Sam. We’re truly sorry to hear that aspects of your recent visit left you feeling disappointed. Clear communication and individualized care are important to us and we understand how stressful urgent visits can be, especially when it comes to urinary concerns. We aim to provide thorough guidance and support, so it's concerning to hear that some parts of your cat’s care plan weren’t clearly explained at the time. Your feedback highlights areas we can improve, particularly in how we communicate follow-up instructions and ensure recommendations are tailored appropriately.

We never want clients to feel that product suggestions are prioritized over medical advice and we apologize if it came across that way during your visit. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly so we can review your experience and make things right. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Negative experience: something is off about this place, I did not feel comfortable there. my dog was showing UTI symptoms a few weeks ago, and I brought her in. I have a very nervous dog, and I was asking a lot of questions because I really needed to minimize any physical contact they had with my dog .. and I felt like every question I had was met with blank stares and long silences. the urine sample we got for my dog was thrown out before I had even left the building (because someone in the back thought we were "done with it"), which I was pretty blown away by... anyway, that service was finally provided (150 for analysis + 100 for an 'exam'). I should have just left, but I wanted that analysis done at the very least, to feel like I was making some progress towards treatment. thankfully, my vet clinic took over the case the next day. I'll be going somewhere else the next time I have an after-hours issue!

Fantastic experience: Earlier this year, my partner Steve and I went through one of the hardest experiences of our lives—saying goodbye to our beloved little cat, Wednesday. Wenny was a tiny black cat with a big spirit, even though she faced developmental challenges from the start. She was gentle, curious, and filled our home with quiet comfort. In early 2025, she started having severe respiratory issues, and we knew we were heading into a difficult chapter. It was overwhelming, both emotionally and financially. But from the moment we walked into 4Paws, we were met with nothing but kindness. The staff and veterinarians treated Wednesday with such care and respect, and they walked us through every step with compassion. Even when money was tight, they made sure Wenny got the medication and support she needed—giving us two more precious months with her. Those extra months meant the world. She spent them playing, cuddling, and gazing at the floating dust in the sunlight with her soft little purrs. We were able to give her a peaceful, love-filled goodbye. We’re incredibly grateful to the entire team at 4Paws. Their empathy, patience, and dedication made an unbearable time just a little more bearable. I wouldn’t wish this kind of heartbreak on anyone—but if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, I hope you find the kind of support we found in them. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. —TJ & Steve

Negative experience: We took my little dog to the emergency vet, and sadly, we had to put her to sleep because she had advanced cancer. The staff was very kind and attentive. The process was quick and very gentle. They explained everything to us very well. However, the big problem for us was that they told us we would receive her ashes within two weeks. We waited longer than that, and they never called us. When we finally went to pick up the ashes, they gave us a different urn than the one we had originally chosen. It was heartbreaking to go through that. After three weeks, they finally gave us the correct urn that we had chosen and paid for. I just hope the ashes we received really belong to my dog. It was very poor service, and it added a lot of pain to an already difficult situation.

Negative experience: It is truly unfortunate I have to give you at least 1 star to write this review, when you deserve to have this so called veterinary hospital shut down immediately. Do not take your animals here, 4 Paws Veterinary Hospital is a predatory business, and distressed pet owners with ill pets are their favorite prey. Upon bringing my 10 month old cat here for acting lethargic all of a sudden, the Vet who examined my boy was unable to identify anything wrong with him, and so she assumed he had a fractured or broken spine and said in that case "humane euthanasia" would be the ONLY way to go, but said we should do an X ray to be sure.... Before my appointment, my cat still had mobility in his legs and tail. The vet said she wouldn't be able to do ANYTHING on him, until she administered methadone, as the cat seemed like he was in too much pain from being examined. (more on this later) So I agree, then she suggests an x ray, amongst 3-4 other procedures ranging from ultrasounds to bloodtests. After conducting the X Ray, the vet cleverly declared to me that there was nothing wrong with his x rays besides a little swelling... Afterwards, she proceeded to say he needs blood tests and a cocktail of other procedures to try and figure out what was wrong, shoving a larger bill in my face every time. This hospital was trying to scam me for every $ I had in my bank account. The entire time, the vet who was "caring" for my cat was being very rough with him, and not gentle at all. I realized the Dr., and the techs there didn't care about my young cat, so I decided to discharge him against the vet's recommendation (offcourse they wanted me to shell out thousands of dollars for an obvious diagnosis they couldn't make), and had to sign a waiver that if he dies its not their responsibility, and sent me home with more narcotics prescribed for him. he didn't improve at all afterwards, and lost complete mobility a mere few hours after our visit to 4paws... I went to another vet 3 days after, who took a look at the same exact x rays and was able to diagnose him immediately! he had a fractured spine, and she was surprised the first vet prescribed narcotics when all he needed was steroids!!! (Yes spinal injuries in cats can be fatal but euthanasia is not the first course of treatment as this evil vet suggested) He has a much better and actually caring vet now who was more interested in saving his life, than gouging his owner! When he was being examined at this other vet's office he didn't even meow or show signs of pain ONCE when being examined, when at 4paws he was seemingly in constant agony and had an abnormally decreased heartrate from the stress they were giving him! Now he's regaining mobility and actually moving his legs and tail, even though he seemed paralyzed after his visit to 4paws: Basically the steroids which were prescribed to him within a 30 minute visit to a vet with a conscience worked, and that's all he needed. While he has a lengthy recovery ahead now, he will likely survive. However I am extremely infuriated by this unprofessional care my cat received, as he will likely be physically impaired in the long term as a result of your inhumane treatment of animals. TLDR: Walked in her in distress with my cat, vet gave him an x ray and then misinterpreted it saying he just has a swelling, paid $630 to go home with morphine he didn't need, then took him to a much better vet who diagnosed him immediately with the same X rays and prescribed him steroids like he needed from the get go.

Fantastic experience: I took my mastiff in for an emergency visit and from the time we arrived until we left we were treated with very understanding and loving staff. Being a pet emergency center I expected high energy but instead we received patience and amazing care for our Bella. Great job everyone. We are grateful for you and our Bella is doing well today . Negative experience: I’ve had multiple frustrating experiences with 4 Paws Vet Clinic, often due to poor communication between staff and myself. In June 2024, I brought my cat in and was told she might have crystals, with advice to switch her food. However, I was given vague recommendations without specific brands, and the visit cost around $600. I switched her food to Purina Pro Plan Urinary. Fast forward to November 2024, my cat started urinating on the floor with blood present. I called the clinic, and they assured me I’d get an invoice with costs upfront. However, after a visit costing $300-400, no invoice was provided, and no tests were done. They advised me to collect a urine sample at home because my cats bladder was not full. Not sure how they could know that If the vet didn’t even touch her and had me do the examination. I also was not happy about that because I had to weigh my cat, carry her, and hold her down while the vet tried to examine her. She did not do a full examine and looked scared of my cat because she hissed at the vet assistant before she came in. I was not impressed because my cat is anxious and all the other vets she has been to were able to do a full examination on their own. I spoke with the manager and she did offer to cover the urinalysis after I expressed dissatisfaction. After multiple attempts to collect a urine sample (around $168), the test showed blood and bacteria, but no clear explanation was provided, only vague references to stress and maybe infection. My cat was prescribed multiple medications which was costly. I called one last time and they told me they’ll send me a email with stress in cats and what I can do. Ignoring the fact that I was asking for options because the medications obviously didn’t work and I knew it was not just “stress”. Despite trying various methods to reduce her stress, nothing improved. I eventually went to another Animal Hospital who immediately recommended an ultrasound, revealing bladder stones. They explained that if 4 Paws had prescribed the right diet in June, my cat’s crystals could’ve dissolved before turning into stones. This situation, which could have been avoided, led to unnecessary visits, bills, and stress. I feel like this was more about making money than truly helping my pet, and I regret not getting a refund for all the unnecessary procedures.

Thank you for touching base Maya - we understand how challenging it can be to manage a pet’s health, especially when dealing with complex, ongoing conditions. Lower urinary tract disease often involves multiple contributing factors, and we recognize that finding the right diagnosis and treatment plan can be a process of trial and error, which can be equally frustrating for us as Veterinarians. Every case is unique, and we strive to approach each one with the utmost care.
We are deeply committed to our patients' well-being, and we would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your concerns further. We hope to improve our communication and approach moving forward. Please don’t hesitate to reach out, and we would be happy to have our Medical Director address any further questions or uncertainties you may have.

Fantastic experience: Today I thought I would have to put my dog down, but luckily that wasn't the case! Dr. Brittni was wonderful with my 12.5 year old husky and checking him over thoroughly to try to problem solve his symptoms! No unnecessary charges or unnecessary procedures, just genuine help with Thor (bonus points that he really took to her and allowed X-rays and exams). Special shout out to Randy, you're a gem and made this process very easy! Hopefully we won't have to be back to a vet anytime soon but if we do, this is my first stop!

Fantastic experience: This hospital is absolutely amazing. We brought our sick shepherd in and he was very sick when we arrived. They acted very quickly and took such good care of him from start to finish. They walked us through every step of the way and not only comforted me but comforted my dog. Dr. Brittney was top notch and truly has the best bedside manner and was genuinely amazing. You couldn’t have asked for a better Dr. Thank you doesn’t even come close to what she did for our best friend Harley and my family. The compassion this whole team showed is truly incredible and I am so appreciative and thankful humans like them exist. So thank you for helping me say goodbye to my best friend.

Negative experience: This Clinic is owned by a large corporation "Vet Strategy", a private equity backed company. Expect to pay far more here than a locally owned vet clinic. It's hard to get consistency and items can be missed and appointments can be rushed depending on the vet. With inconsistency in vets it can be hard to treat ongoing issues. Pros: Relatively easy to get in to see someone at short notice. Most of the staff is kind and caring

Fantastic experience: Our 4 year old Labrador Trooper decided to eat something he couldn't digest. We were referred to 4 paws by or local vet on the Monday before Christmas as our Local clinic didn't have the required ultrasound equipment to diagnose him. 4 paws saw him that afternoon and the next morning he had surgery to remove foreign objects from his intestines. We needed to leave our boy with them over Christmas as we are 1.5 hours away and our local vet closed on Christmasso it wasnt safe to take him home. The staff at 4 paws followed up with us several times on both the 24th and 25th. When he was not eating as expected the staff at 4 paws made arrangements so I could come and sit with him on Christmas evening to see of he would eat for me. That worked and we were able to take him home on the 26th where he has made a full recovery and is doing well. I would like to thank the vets who worked with trooper and kept us updated over Christmas (and followed up after) , the techs who supervised his recovery and the office staff who were very patient with an anxious out of town pet parent taking up space in the waiting area for many hours while tests were run and schedules changed to get our boy the treatment he needed in a busy holiday season.

Negative experience: Not all employees are friendly to animals. And they just cheat you out of money. They tried to measure our cat's temperature, we warned that she does not like it and may get angry. The woman continued to shove the thermometer into her ear, but the cat meowed aggressively and raised her paw (she did not hit). After that, they decided to give her a sedative, after which she fell asleep. By the way, in the clinic where we usually go to, they did tests, injections, x-rays, measured her temperature, without any sedatives. And what surprised us most of all, after that they didn't even take her temperature. We just waited 1.5 hours (instead of 30-45 minutes as they said), they gave her an injection and sent us home. Why did you poison my cat for no reason? And even though the nurse or whoever she was, she gave one treat and our cat didn't want to eat it, the second one was thrown so carelessly. Also a question, what did you want to show by this? Why did you throw her another one if she didn't want to eat? Again, by the way, in our clinic that we usually visit, she eats all the treats. You are just a nightmare. And on the way out they will tell you see you again instead of a speedy recovery and good luck. We will never contact you again.

4 Paws Veterinary Hospital

Ольга, We take all client concerns seriously and aim to provide the best care for every patient. We would like to clarify that sedation may be recommended by a veterinarian for various reasons, such as ensuring the safety and comfort of your pet during procedures, especially if they are stressed or in pain. We make every effort to explain the need for such decisions and discuss them with each pet owner.

It is important to note that each clinic may have different protocols in place for handling procedures and interactions with animals. If you have any further concerns or questions about your experience, we encourage you to contact the clinic directly so we can address them thoroughly.

Jamie Clements Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: I cannot recommend this clinic based on my experience. While the veterinarians were pleasant to interact with, the management practices and pricing model were highly concerning. Our dog suffered a dislocated leg that required X-rays, a splint, and bandaging. The clinic insisted on follow-up appointments every 3–5 days, each costing approximately $200. This directly conflicted with the guidance provided by the surgeon they referred us to, who recommended a less frequent follow-up schedule. When I attempted to reschedule the appointment based on the surgeon's advice, the clinic refused, citing their own recommendations. Ultimately, we decided to switch to another veterinary provider, and the difference was remarkable. The new clinic schedules follow-ups every two weeks, with occasional visits every three days costing just $19 compared to $200. By the time our dog fully recovers, we estimate saving nearly $1,000 by switching providers. This experience gave me the impression that 4 Paws prioritized revenue over client affordability or convenience. I recommend carefully evaluating alternative clinics to ensure you're receiving fair and practical care for your pet.

Sarah Craig Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Very disappointed with this vet clinic. After visiting here I incurred almost $2000 in vet visits expense out of pocket that weren’t necessary. I was charged $400 for X-rays that were poorly interpreted. $60 for a smear I had told them he just had and was negative and $160 for a consultation that provided inaccurate information. As a result of said consultation I was referred to a cardiologist which cost another $900. The cardiologist explained that the visit was unnecessary but he would still take a look. My dog was reacting normally to the treatment he was undergoing and there was no need for concern. Numerous times he mentioned that this was frankly due to the inexperience of the referring vet. I asked him to send the referring vet copies of the report so that they could learn from the experience. I wrote 4 paws of my concern only to get a call to have someone argue with me. Very frustrating. A simple recognition of their error and apology would have been more appropriate. Of course the cardiologist wouldn’t put it as bluntly as he told me that this was due to in-experience. The nerve of their head doctor to even tell me that they had been in touch with Dr. Orr when it I who asked him to please make sure that they get a copy so they could learn from the experience and he agreed after he initially was only going to send it to my regular vet.

Positive experience: They were able to fit us in when my cat had a sudden limp and could not get comfortable. They suggested x-rays, which came to 400 dollars, which they then told me they could not read and would need to send off to another specialist for $200 more. They were great in that they ensured my cat was comfortable and made sure she had pain medicine, but I would have appreciated a heads up that there could be an additional fee if the x-ray wasn't obviously wrong. Had I known that, I would have gone to our regular vet the next day when they opened and just taken the pain meds from the emergency vet as the bill was over $1000 with the x-ray and specialist. Otherwise, the staff are very kind and they provide good service. I just wish they had been more transparent and mentioned that there could be this secondary cost.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been bringing my pets here for years and have always had good experiences. A few times I’ve called for what turned out to be minor things with my new puppy, and they helped by patiently reassuring me on the phone and offering ways to treat things at home (and of course, saying I should bring him in if I’m still concerned). Those instances definitely made me feel like they’re not trying to push expensive tests and procedures unless they’re really needed.

Fantastic experience: I can’t begin to express my gratitude for the care our fur baby received at 4 Paws! The whole team was nothing but supportive, informative and compassionate the entire time our cat was there. And not just for our kitty but for us as well, they went above and beyond to ensure that she received the care she needed and that we could afford to take care of her. They updated us with calls and were never bothered when I called to check in. Fantastic experience: Highly recommend this animal hospital. My little Malshipoo was in so much pain from a dental abscess, she just couldn't wait for the dental exam we had booked 2 days later with our usual vet. The staff were amazing - the front staff friendly, professional & complete animal-lovers. The vet took a surprising amount of time to explain things & answer questions. She even called 2 days later to see how things were going. My fur-gurl had to sleep there overnight for rehydration & pain control, and even tho I missed her, I knew she was getting lots of belly rubs & excellent medical care. PS. Muggins is 100% again. Thanks, 4Paws! PSS. Get pet insurance, so you don't even blink when your fur-babies need next level medical care. So worth it!

Negative experience: I brought my senior cat to 4 Paws last week and I am completely floored at the lack of compassion and information provided regarding her condition. The staff were great, but the vet Dr. Graffe clearly needs to retire because he seems hardened by the profession. I expect as a patient to have the veterinarian give me their professional opinion. Not just throw random tests and pricing out each time a procedure is mentioned. He seemed more concerned about the invoice than her care. I am not trained and felt I was given little to no information to make an educated decision. We ended up putting her down that night. She deserved better. Rest in peace my sweet Capper.

Positive experience: Hi new pooch mom here. On Sept 14th I was cutting my puppy's nails we are already at the back paw when he started to get bored and moved his paw and I accidentally cut a bit short his nail and started to bleed . I was so shocked and scared with the blood on the floor. Our vet clinic was already closed at the time and I tried to google what to do but I realized I didn't have much time to validate if that's accurate so I just searched any vet emergency . This vet was the first one to show. The lady that helped me was so calm and nice and she direct me on what to do. Thank God I managed the bleeding and my baby is well. Kudos to you!

Fantastic experience: Frantically called last night from 1.5h away (this is the nearest vet open) when my dog ate a bee and was swelling quite badly, they were super responsive and gave me the reassurance I needed to care for her, while giving me contact info for the closest vets in the city if things took a turn. Negative experience: I recently visited here for my new kitten's check-up and vaccination concerns. I had called ahead, provided all the necessary information, and created a file for my kitten. During the call, I mentioned that I would be arriving at 6 pm and was assured that my appointment was noted. When I arrived at the hospital at 6 pm, I informed the front desk that I had called earlier and was there for the check-up. The receptionist acknowledged my appointment in the system but informed me that there was a 5-hour wait time due to many emergencies. She suggested that it might not be the best day for the visit. My concern is that if the hospital knew about my appointment and the expected wait time, why didn't they inform me beforehand? We drove a long distance only to be told to call and reschedule. This lack of communication caused unnecessary inconvenience. I believe a simple courtesy call to inform us of the wait time would have been greatly appreciated and saved us the trip.

Negative experience: A complete rip off, I would go 0 if I can. My cat has Diarrhea for 5 days, the doctor didn't seem to read any of the questions the assistant had asked and repeated asking them. He then recommended x-rays and blood tests, which alone cost a thousand dollars already. I knew the x-ray wouldn't help because my cat only had diarrhea, not having blood in his poop or vomiting, but the doctor insisted on it, and the x-ray showed that everything was fine. After all this the doctor asked for the cat to be hospitalized because he was a little dehydrated and had low phosphorus. That bumped the whole bill up to over $2,000 just for a diarrhea! The doctor didn’t have a clue about what was going on, she wanted us to do all the tests (totally unnecessary) and I'm sure they just took advantage of our anxiety to make money off of us! DO NOT COME here for non-life threatening illness otherwise prepare 2000 dollars minimum for diagnosis. We left without knowing what caused the problem and what to expect with the diarrhea, and not to mention the male assistant looks not sober and does not care about your animal.

Hi, we are sorry that your experience left you feeling like this. A pet's health is always our top concern. As animals can't communicate all of their pains and discomfort when an issue presents, diagnostics are needed for us to have a better picture. Our suggestion to perform additional tests was out of concern for your pet's condition. We are sorry if you feel different and apologize if our upbeat staff member left a negative impression. Dr Grasse and Dr Porter were both fantastic, and kept me updated on my pup Sophie's health. Karyn and Dr. Mitchell ensured that my arrival and departure respectively, were handled with great patience, answering all my questions and concerns. The two lovely ladies at the front desk, one with auburn hair and Leslie... You guys were awesome. As a first time pet parent visiting an Emerg clinic, my nerves were frayed. You guys walked me back from the ledge... Thank you! To all veterinary ecosystem members in Halifax, NS.... You guys truly make a difference...and I know it isn't always easy. Thank you for all you do.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Sykes and her assistant Dillon were so helpful when my boy got a serious case of Kennel Cough. So thankful I brought him in when I did and I was glad to have such a great team that looked after him! Also a big thank you to the patient group of people who took my numerous phone calls leading up to my visit

Fantastic experience: There are no words to express my gratitude to Dr. Sykes and 4 Paws for the exceptional care they provided to my sweet 14.5yo dog, Sammi. From our first appointment, to follow up calls, and to end of life care, Dr. Sykes and team were so compassionate. I’m grateful knowing my dog was in great hands during her last days.

Negative experience: I wouldn't use this clinic unless you have no other choice.. They failed to do a complete physical on my cat, telling me he probably had a brain tumor causing seizures and would continue to decline. Charging me for blood work and seizure medication. This clinic failed to do a basic oral examination, making me think I was going to lose my cat.. Visited my regular vet next day to find a massive absess in his mouth, causing all his symptoms.

Negative experience: For anyone considering coming here, please read all reviews and check reddit. Like a lot of other folks I had a great first experience with a female vet, she was compassionate, discussed everything in detail, including costs, and didn't push for anything. We were even refunded a little for medication not used. We brought our cat back in for repeat symptoms (previous dx was UTI and blockage caused by infection) and saw Dr Gasse. It was obvious he didn't check her file prior to seeing us, because he decided it wasn't an infection but ulcers, and wanted an ultrasound. She had one 2 weeks ago that was clear. He insisted, we agreed, and AGAIN the ultrasound showed no ulcers. What follow after that was differing quotes and suspected diagnoses that ranged from 300 to 1300. He wanted us to by RX cat food, a device to calm her, and painkillers. Painkillers that he said she needed for the ulcers which she didn't have. It is absolutely clear to me that my pets care was less about her health and more about how he can pad the bill. And to top it all off, when we advised we needed time to sort finances it was politely suggested we go elsewhere where it's cheaper. I am absolutely furious.

Negative experience: Our cat has had two appointments at 4 Paws for a urinary blockage and infection. The first visit was great, the vet was caring and thorough and took good care of our cat. The second visit, we had Dr. Gasse. He incorrectly diagnosed our cat with ulcers, without even looking at the tests that had been done during her previous visit that showed she most definitely did not have ulcers. Hand-waved concern over her infection returning. He wanted to repeat a test that had already been done, because he didn't check her file. Prescribed pain meds without evidence that she needs them. The cost estimate changed three times. Concerned only with the money that can be made, it seems. Cherry on top, he felt the need to describe the basic anatomy of the bladder and urinary system to my sister, and got it wrong. He told her cats pee out of their vagina. If you're going to be condescending to patients and talk to them like they're children, at least have your facts correct. Really makes me doubt his ability as a vet. Will not be coming back here.

Fantastic experience: We have used the 4 Paws 24hr Veterinary Hospital twice. Both times we had dogs at the end of their lives that we were monitoring daily to decide when it was time. The last was yesterday. When that time arrived, our vets couldn't take us in for a few days, so we went to 4 Paws. I can't possible explain how incredible they were both times. The entire staff that we encountered were amazing. Not only with their words and professionalism, but with real empathy and real tears and actions to back it all up. Best experience I have ever had with Vets, and it was here both times, especially yesterday. I can't imagine how you can have a bad experience with these caring beautiful people. My wife feels the same. We are so grateful to have experienced this level of care and empathy and kindness at the most difficult time for a dog lover. Thank you again if you see this.

Negative experience: I had a very unsettling experience at this vet clinic roughly 2 months ago. I brought my cat in as he wasn't himself and our regular clinic was closed. My partner and I were in the process of taking him to Georgia for a kidney transplant. He was in late stage kidney disease. We were the only people in the vet clinic when we arrived. A vet named Stephanie Hawyard was working and come to triage Riley for us. From the start she had a rude attitude. We had alot of questions to ask and at one point she slapped her hands on her knees and stated " so, do you guys have anymore questions" with an aggressive tone and rolled her eyes. She took Riley outback as it was determined he had a bladder infection. As we were sitting in the room , we heard very loudly coming from behind the doors Stephanie yelling about how mangled Riley looked, stated his teeth were a mess after he just had dental surgery, how we were crazy for taking our cat to Georgia to the staff out back. It made us so upset as we were trying so hard to help Riley and everyone was so supportive at all the other clinics we've been to. We rushed right to the desk and we told the girls working what we heard and we wanted our cat back. They were sympathic and rushed right out back to get Riley. Stephanie did not come out to apologize. They took our names and numbers down so that the manager could reach out to us. We have yet to hear anything back from them .No apologies, nothing.

Negative experience: This office new triage system is a joke. Setting an appointment time for "triage" to then be informed you will have to wait six and seven hours doesnt seem quite right. It's strange to expect people to wait at the office, or as suggested to me in my vehicle for an entire day to possibly not even get to see a vet. I would happily pay the increased rates if a vet was actually avaliable.

Tanya Gilbert Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: I came to this vet last evening unfortunately to put my elderly 27 year old cat to rest. This was the worst vet experience I have ever had. I had about 4 staff and the vet who I was with. The tech at the end was the only one that showed compassion and was very friendly. During such an experience. I would have expected some compassion and even a smile. I had none. The vet, himself may have spoken a brief few sentences to me. Nothing more. He was very cold, unfriendly and very uncaring. It was a very hard situation to be in but I had no choice but to be there. It was the only place open at the time. It was a horrible experience. But I know I had to do what’s best for my kitty at the time. I wouldn’t want anyone else to experience this at their best friends last day and to have this memory. :(

Negative experience: I brought my cat here because he was having bladder issues. They were able to see him promptly the three days in a row I brought him in. On the third day he died at the vets. They sat me down and let me hold my dead cat, I was near hysterical. After a mere couple minutes they got into the money talk. Asked if they should bring me the POS system while I was still holding him so I to pay the $600 bill for giving him blood-work and CPR. It felt very inconsiderate considering the circumstances.

Positive experience: I had to take my 5 month old puppy in for a gastrointestinal problem. First you have to go through triage which costs about 60.00. At triage I was asked if I had called poison control which I had not as my vet had referred me here, not to poison control. She told me I could call poison control but that I would be charged. I was left feeling confused by this. Isn't the reason you go to an emergency vet clinic is to have a professional veterinarian tell you whether your pet ingested something toxic? I then had to wait for approximately 6 hours to see the vet who was lovely and made the experience palatable. When I asked someone at the front desk if I could go home to get my puppy some food they told me I would lose my spot in the queue and go to the bottom of the list. When I saw the vet, she noticed that I had a water dish with me. She asked if it belonged to the clinic but I told her I had brought it from home. She said they would have provided water. I will say that at no time during my time at this vet clinic was I asked if my puppy needed anything and nor was I. I was given some meds and puppy food from Royal Canin. When I inquired how much to feed the puppy I was told 1 can per day. I asked again as that didn't seem like enough and there were no directions on the label , and was told 1 to 1.5 cans per day. I called the clinic the next day as I had looked up Royal Canin on the website and it seemed to me that the puppy required more food. I repeated the story to the receptionist who said to do what I was told yesterday by who I presumed to be vet tech. I asked why I was given 10 cans of food if I was supposed to feed small frequent meals for 2-3 days. She then went to check with the vet. The receptionist came back and said there must have been some confusion as the actual amount to be fed was 4 cans. There was no confusion. The person simply didn't know the answer and rather than doublecheck provided the wrong information as did the receptionist. If I hadn't advocated for my puppy , he would have been starving for the next 3 days and which I can't see as helpful for a puppy with gastro issues! All in all, not a great experience. As I said, the vet was helpful and professional and apologetic about the wait. Again, no one at the front desk said anything about how long we were waiting. IF this is a true emergency and you require urgent care this may be an okay place to go but advocate for your pet if the directions for care are unclear or confusing. Don't assume that the support staff know what they are talking about. I usually don't write reviews but felt that the experience warranted one. I will also speak with my own vet so they know who they are referring to and possible problems they might encounter there. Thank you, Terri

Negative experience: If I could give a zero star, I would. These people aren’t about the animals. They are about the money. They couldn’t care less about the animals that come to their office. We brought our deceased cat there to have her cremated and was told to take her home and put her in our freezer with our food until we had FULL payment… spryfield let us pay on pick up. then again, my mother took her legit dying and suffering cat there to have her put down… TWO HOURS after their APPOINTMENT she was still waiting to be seen. She could have just suffered at home where she was comfortable. It’s disgusting the way this clinic works and I really do not recommend them to ANYONE!!!! Go across the street to lady Hammond veterinary. Or if it’s an emergency , Dartmouth emergency. They are amazing. Worst experience of my life here. These animals are our family, show some respect.

Negative experience: I needed a bottle of insulin for my diabetic cat. My regular vet was closed for the evening so I called 4 Paws and explained my situation. They said they wouldn't sell me a bottle of insulin unless I brought my cat in for an exam which is not cheap. I explained again that I ran out of insulin and just wanted to buy another bottle because my regular vet was closed. Again they said they wouldn't sell me a bottle of insulin unless I brought my cat in for an exam.

Hi Geralt, we are required by law to ensure that we have established a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) before prescribing any medication to an animal. This means that we must have seen and examined the patient within the past 12 months, in order to ensure that we have a comprehensive understanding of their health status and any underlying medical conditions. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all animals. Our priority is always to provide the highest level of care, and establishing a VCPR is an important part of achieving that goal. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly. Thank you.

Negative experience: Would give zero, if I could. I spent over $700 on a check up, x-rays and medication during an emergency visit. 3 weeks later, I call to purchase some more anti-inflammatory medicine. The girl on the phone was unpleasant and extremely rude, she refused to sell me the medicine without booking another appointment. I explained that her co-worker had already said, I could get a refill and purchase it without appointment, but she didn't want to hear it. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Edit/Update: During that emergency visit, the Vet was telling me to schedule a $5,000.00 TPLO surgery. The next week I went to see a second Vet, and they assured me the dog would be fine without surgery. 4 months later and my dog is completely fine without surgery, don't trust this place!

Fantastic experience: My dog recently needed emergency surgery and the doctors, technicians and receptionists at this clinic were one word: incredible. After needing to stay at the clinic for 5+ days, by some miracle (aka: the hard work of everyone mentioned above) my best friend was able to come home and is finishing his recovery with me. Negative experience: After paying for a vet services of my pet that was sick I was asked by the vet if I wanted to put the cat down or not. I said I wasn't sure and he provided me with alternative options. In the end all of these options we had previously tried to some degree. After going through the heartbreak of losing my pet I got the bill and they had added a bunch of counselling on. I understand that time is money but if you're going to charge me for a 10 minute conversation I'd like to know its going to cost more money. I probably would have paid regardless but I felt upset that I wasn't informed. I paid the bill and left without asking questions but ultimately I felt it was opportunistic and in poor taste to fake concern for my pet in order to charge me more. The staff were all great aside from this and unfortunately this ruined the experience.

Fantastic experience: Brought Tilley here because she was having an asthma attack. She saw a vet within 20 minutes of her arrival. Negative experience: Very disappointed with the service I’ve recently received here at 4 paws , and quite frankly feel as though I was taken advantage of . Firstly , my family and I had dealt with this vet hospital in the past , and was actually very pleased with the outcome and the bill . Hence why I stepped foot in there again. this time around was a different story .. My cat gave birth approx 3 weeks ago to 1 kitten . Over the course of the 3 weeks, I noticed that the kitten wasn’t eating off mom , and seemed to be very lethargic and not well. I panicked , and went to the vet to make sure the kitten was okay, and if not find out what was wrong. The vet looked over my kitten for 2 seconds , quickly fed her from a syringe which she took and told me she was fine , she looks healthy , she just needs to be hand fed to ensure she’s getting enough nutrients. Okay this is great ! Next thing I’m being told that it is going to cost $200 for todays appt !!!!!! Of course I’m SHOCKED. $100 , yes okay I get it vets aren’t cheap . But $200 , I asked exactly for what was I being charged for, as the doctor literally looked at her for a second to tell me she was fine - and their response, very matter of fact and cold was “just to be seen here that’s the price“ I couldn’t believe it. Nothing was done . And they didn’t even offer me so much as a syringe or bottle to take home with me to help feed the cat , they told me to go to some other place to purchase the Kitty milk. They weren’t willing to budge on the price or let me pay in payments, and of course wouldn’t give me my kitten back unless the fee was paid . The staff were very cold towards me , I was so upset and mad at myself for even bringing my kitten there in the first place . They gave me the option to surrender the kitten to them . And my response was , so you guys would rather take this kitten from its mom at 2-3 weeks old when there is absolutely nothing wrong with her then charge me a NORMAL exam fee and give her back to me !?!? Words can’t describe how disgusted I am at this place . And all the staff and that doctor should be ashamed of themselves. Especially with how heartless and cold you made me feel when I was only trying to do the right thing . I would not recc ever going to this vet unless you don’t mind paying outrages bills for nothing . Also , don’t go here if you are looking or expecting to be comforted in a scared and panicked moment .

Negative experience: We recently switched to a different vet and the whole experience validated all of the negative feelings I was having about 4paws. Don’t get me wrong, we had some positive experiences there but overall the negatives were enough to turn me away. On numerous occasions we were given expensive treatments that did next to nothing. This would be fine but during the examinations it felt as though the vets never cared and hardly did a thorough look. On one occasion we were told “there is nothing wrong with your dog” and sent away with 400$ shampoo and medication. It just felt like they didn’t actually care to give a full inspection or listen to what symptoms we were trying to explain. The treatments hardly ever helped and we would often find ourselves back at the vet having to pay another chunk of money for some other treatment. Thankfully we were able to manage the symptoms after researching the issue ourselves. Additionally our dog can be reactive and occasionally barks when the vet knocks on the examination door when they first enter. The barking usually only lasts a second however one one instance the vet was extremely agitated with us and suggested we get a muzzle. Our dog has never ever but anyone and hardly shows signs of aggression beyond a few barks. After the few barks our dog was friendly and happy. I expect a vet to not be scared of a barking dog. It felt as though we were given a cat person vet who did not want to be around the dog at all. She was extremely rude and dismissive. Additionally, the staff were reluctant to allow any accommodations for bringing our dog into the appointment as she can be reactive to cats and dogs while on leash. I don’t think it’s too much to ask to have us come in to an empty waiting room. There are many other reviews that share the sentiments I do. It just feels like they don’t care about your pets and strictly want to get as much money as they can. If you can, try a different vet. We now go to one located on Quinpool, which I highly highly recommend.

Negative experience: Highway Robbery! This vet has quoted me almost 800.00 to neuter my 10 month old cat. I’ve gotten quotes from outside the city for as low as 150.00 however no new clients. How can 4 paws justify charging this kinda money, I had saved up almost 700.00 towards it but they milked that outta me in two appointments to fix a “slight infection”, so for almost 2 months my cute little guy has been marking non stop and this vet milked the money outta me I had saved up and now I have no solution and they don’t seem to care they got over 600.00 outta me for nothing. I’m beyond frustrated with them, wondering if there is legal action I can take? This is not the sign of a vet that cares about its clients. I have been a client for over two years (I have another cat) and even that doesn’t matter. Pure GREED!

Negative experience: Back in the fall I called to see if they could take my cat. He developed an abscess after getting into a fight with another cat. There was blood and pus. They told me it wasn't an emergency despite there being pus present, obvious swelling and him having a difficult time walking. I called 4paws as my vet was quite backed up. Ended up taking him to tantallon Veterinary Hospital who took him right away. It had to be drained and he needed antibiotic + pain medication.

Negative experience: I came home at night to find my cat with one leg that wouldn't touch the ground. So I brought him here. But the doctor simply looked at my cat‘s bones, told me there was nothing wrong with them and sent me home with a $50 bottle of medicine. The next morning I found a cut on my cat's leg. They couldn't do the most basic tests and charged me $210. I called them to tell them about the situation and said I wanted to bring the cat in for a check-up tonight, and they told me I still had to pay the $90 emergency room fee. I said that they were very unprofessional and I admitted that my cat was not very cooperative during the examination because he was in a lot of pain but the doctor abandoned the examination. I'm disappointed.

Negative experience: I’m sure the people who work here are in fact animal lovers, but as a whole this business is a scam. I brought my cat in because she had stopped eating. The vets took a look at her and gave us some vague ideas as to what it could be. They briefly looked at her mouth and I was told that it could be a dental issue, but they couldn’t really look at her mouth without putting her under anesthesia. (We later found out this is not true). After taking her blood we waited for an hour for the vets to tell us they didn’t know how to assess her results and it would be an extra 100$ to send out her blood work to a lab. At the end of it all we were charged 600$ for the assessment and blood work, and were told it would be about 3000$ for dental work. A couple days later they called back to pressure me into scheduling the dental appointment. To get a second opinion we went to the lady Hammond vet where we were told it was 100% not a dental issue, that they could not use the blood work that 4 paws sent to them because it is required to be sent to an outside lab, which lady Hammond does automatically without the extra 100$ fee, and even if they did need to do dental work they gave us an estimate of 900$ as opposed to the 3000$ we were told by 4 paws. They then did their own blood work, and by the end, the charge for the assessment and blood work was half the price of what we paid at 4 paws. The vets at lady Hammond seemed unsurprised that 4 paws was charging us a ridiculous amount of money while also in disbelief that it was twice as much just for the assessment. Do not go to 4 paws. They exploit people’s love for their animals to charge them excessive amounts for their service. My partner and I work minimum wage jobs, and I can’t help but feel taken advantage of.

Fantastic experience: Last summer, the wonderful staff at 4Paws helped me see two of my beloved cats through to gentle ends. Both declined suddenly, unexpectedly and rapidly. 4Paws did everything in their power to heal them both so they could have quality of life, and provided information, care and support for my cats and me alike when the time came for me to make the hard decision to let them go. The past few days, they have been wonderful once again in providing emergency care for one of my cats who has suddenly lost much of her eyesight due to undiagnosed hypertension. They have been patient, nonjudgmental, informative and kind in caring for my poor, dear girl. This despite her health issue not being life-threatening, and the staff being quite busy caring for pets who needed immediate care for life-threatening emergencies both times they welcomed me to bring my cat in. I am so grateful to everyone at 4Paws for all they’ve done to help me and my family of kitties, both those who are still with me and the two who had to cross the rainbow bridge last year. I truly don’t know what I would have done without them, either last year or the past few days. I cannot recommend 4Paws more to anyone who needs emergency care for their pet.

Fantastic experience: I've taken my dog here a couple of times over the years and I have peace of mind knowing they are there for whatever might come next. The front desk staff is always warm and accomodating. The vets are knowledgeable and compassionate. I didn't feel like I was being rushed - quite the opposite. Both times my dog has been in extremely rough shape, this animal hospital gave me all the tools to get her back on her feet and made me feel like her health was a priority for them. They followed up to check in (which I appreciated) and I called *several* times with concerns and questions. Every time, I was put on hold, the vet was consulted, and I was given answers and solutions. They are a wonderful group of folks who seem to genuinely care. Highly recommend. <3

Fantastic experience: We are beyond thankful for the staff at 4 Paws. The staff are kind and very helpful. We highly recommend this emergency veterinarian hospital! We really appreciated how the Doctor gave us lots of different treatment options rather than trying to get us to spend money on tests that were not necessarily needed. A huge thank you to treating our car so kindly ❤️❤️

Fantastic experience: I’m so thankful for 4Paws. My regular vet wasn’t open, which now I am glad…because we ended up coming to 4Paws and received exceptional care for our cat. Every staff member we interacted with was phenomenal and it’s evident that they take pride in everything they do. I will definitely be making 4Paws my go-to veterinarian clinic.
