He has allergies and he gets a shot for them every 1-4 months. I just returned to Nanaimo and was anxious to try a new clinic. These ladies took incredible care and time with him. He does not like getting his shot or vet exams but he left thrilled with the experience. He literally fell in love with one of the ladies here. Thankful to have somewhere to take him for his shot! Expérience fantastique: Our Chocolate Lab, Belle, was in for her yearly check-up, plus (unfortunately) to have her lymph node aspirated for cancer. The aspiration was explained to be difficult, but Dr. Milligan was able to get a sample and Dr. Alex called with the great news that Belle was cancer-free! I've never heard a vet be so excited over the phone! All the vets that we have seen and all the front desk and RMT staff are so caring and compassionate. I've already recommended Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital to a few people! Thank you all so much. xoxo

Expérience fantastique: The staff is very nice and open to working with scared dogs. My dog has been very scared at vet hospitals and the whole team including doctor Sam has been open to working with my dog to build a positive experience every time we go in. This has been the only local vet hospital I was able to get in for an emergency. Warning for reactive dog owners there is only one entrance door, may want to go in without the pup and check if any dogs are present > the waiting are is close to the entrance and its a tighter space, we did not see any side entrance. :) Overall great experience and we will be switching to this hospital for all of our regular visits, even though we live right across from Chase river veterinary hospital, under 2min walking. You can tell who knows how to and wants to work on improving the dogs experience at the hospital.

Expérience fantastique: We found this vet after our kitten had a freak accident and ripped her side open. The emergency vet was closed and no one would take her. Thank god for this incredible veterinary clinic for taking her in for emergency surgery that morning! After having such an amazing experience with them (so kind, helpful and caring) we officially switched to them as our full time vet! Best decision we made! Our girl is happy, healthy and fully healed <3

Expérience fantastique: I have only good things to say about Nanaimo Veterinary Hosp. My 14 year old dog was diagnosed properly and treated as such within minutes. Dr. Briggs was kind and professional as were all the staff there. Afterwards they emailed me pictures of the xrays and additional information to help set my mind at ease. Thank you so much to all at NVH.

Went to get my dogs anal glands expressed, vet wanted to sedate my dog and did an unnecessary exam ( as she just had a full exam two and a half months prior). I phoned my old vet ( as I recently moved) and they got her in, no issues- done anal glands in less then 10 minutes and cost me $25. THIS vet charged me 130$ just for coming in, not doing the anal glands and wanted to sedate my dog! Unbelievable. Reason I gave 2 stars is my past experience with the younger vet was fabulous, I was seen by a different vet this time and was shocked by the treatment.

Expérience négative: We were charged 125$ for an unnecessary exam and to be told they couldn’t do anal gland expression without sedating our dog to do procedure. When we questioned why the 125$ charge we were told “it’s because you saw a doctor for an exam” we were only there for a total of 20 minutes including sitting the empty waiting room for 10 mins. Terrible experience with a place that seems to be all about a cash grab rather than doing what was necessary.

Expérience négative: Went to get my dogs Titers done - they quoted me $1200.00 like it was nothing. (Elsewhere is $350 max) However I did get tick and flee meds along with the exam costed $225.00 even though I made the appointment for the Titers. If all this makes you think that the extra cost means they care more about your pet then this is your vet. Somewhere this place changed when Dr Hayward left along with his good name. Bye bye. July 2, 2025 - I wasn't able to respond to your response without updating my review. Would you like me to upload the other Vet's Bill? Your Treatment plan shows $674.90 for Rabies Serology -Export (FAVN) Indexx. This report is useless - a quick Google search shows this. So if I eliminate that from the bill then its not soo bad.

Expérience fantastique: Always available for urgent care, with another vet in office if my vet is not available, to refill prescriptions, and see in person or talk on the phone . Staff are excellent and very kind. My vet is Alexander Kirkham and she is the best, we have had numerous complicated problems with different dogs, and she always steps up, with thorough knowledge and investigates all solutions. She is kind and really has a love for animals and their families. We have had many pets over the last 45 years and she has been absolutely wonderful.

Expérience fantastique: I’ve been taking my pets here for several years now. My new rescue dog had to have a rear leg amputation yesterday. I greatly appreciated being informed when the surgery was finished, and throughout the day prior to pick up, including a call from Dr. James who did the surgery. All my questions were answered and my dog is doing really well. :)

Expérience négative: Yesterday was my first and last visit to this clinic. I brought in my cat who seemed to have issues while going "number2" for a while so I thought I would better check what was going on with her. We arrived on time, were taken to the exam room where the vet assistant - an arrogant, grumpy brunette - gathered all the necessary details and the doctor arrived after. I was presented with the $1200 estimate for the tests, x-ray etc and decided to take that estimate home with me to consider it , which seemed to surprise the vet assistant by some reason, I guess they expected me to drop the weekly salary on tests right that exact day. Anyways, while talking to me , doctor made a couple of notes regarding the medication that I could purchase at the human pharmacy to give to my cat on the post it note and said she would leave those details with the receptionist, which is fine by me. I go to the reception to pay the consultation fee and ask the receptionist regarding that note/medication details , that doctor promised to leave for me with her. She doesnt have them and calls the vet assistant. First, that vet assistant says there was nothing that doctor promised to leave for me, so I remind her of the yellow post it note. She proceeds to say that it was the previously taken medication by my cat to which I respond that no, the details where regarding the medication I could purchase now to help my cat with the bowel movement. To this, vet assistant gets annoyed and finally "remembers" that yes, there was some medication written by the doc but doesnt remember the name of it and I would get it in the email later during the day. Ughhhhhh.......Seriously??? So, instead of taking two minutes of her time and simply ask the doctor the name of the medication, she basically tells me to wait for some email that will show up god-knows-when ! At that point I was done, I have seen enough and simply wanted to go home. That promised email never came . I will certainly never go back to this place , where such unprofessional and unwilling to help people expect me to trust them with my pet and I will take my cat (and my $1200) elsewhere!

From the friendly staff at the front desk to the caring and informative Vets, I received complete details of my pets proposed treatment plan and a detailed price quote...which was kept. The online printouts of the tests and xrays performed and the followup phonecalls were beyond what I have experienced at other animal hospitals in the past and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital to anyone requiring their services.

Molly, and I, love all the kind and caring treatment she receives at Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital. Not only does she approach appointments without any fearfulness, she is always eager and excited when she realizes where we are going.

Then when you do your own research figure out your cat has asthma not hairballs you take her back, just to be treated with distain over not wanting steriods first, instead wanting to try the inhaler. Witch corrected the issue may i add. Then 4 calls to have the script sent. Each call the person who took the call being more rude. Then the women owner kicks my cat out of her clinic for good. She only cares about power over you and money. Not your pet

I am so happy with my decision to bring my past and present cats here for everything from new pet visits to wellness exams to appointments for more serious concerns. At each visit my pet receives a full physical exam. When needed we have discussed different treatment plans based on my budget at the time. I recieve all bloodowork results promptly over the phone and then soon after in my email. Follow up appointments are often at a reduced rate too! Thank you for treating my pets like your pets

Expérience fantastique: We have been taking our Boston Terrier to Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital since we moved to Nanaimo. Most recently Dr Alex and Dr Briggs and the entire team took exceptional care of Summer when she swallowed two used, grease covered SOS pads from the area where we were cleaning our BBQ. Summer is on the mend and we are grateful. Our 9 year old girl has a lot of living left to do and the team at NVH made that happen. We know it wasn't an easy procedure and we are grateful.

They educate you well and are really solid from front staff to vets...we've gone through many vets across nanaimo who over charge or don't explain prices enough, or are rude if we want/need a less expensive option, which has never been our experience here. We've had four pets over time now here, and happy friends who have switched over, none of us will be leaving any time soon.

She's very thorough, doesn't rush the appointment, and takes the time to listen to us and our concerns. Our dog Benny is very happy when he's at the vet! We were very appreciative of their ability to quickly schedule us and the compassion they showed to us and our pet.

Expérience fantastique: Took my dog in to remove a dead tooth and get the rest of her teeth cleaned. Was so pleased with the results and how well she was taken care of! The owners kept us very well informed and even provided a summary folder with all the info about her teeth, before and after photos, and how the procedure went for our records. I will be taking her to this vet hospital from now on!

Expérience négative: I wrote a review of this clinic over a year ago and the response from the owner was so disgraceful, I want to update it and review to warn others of the treatment they're likely to recieve at this clinic. I brought my senior dog in for urgent care on the morning of 3 May 2021, after first calling the clinic to ensure they could see him and care for him in a sudden emergency. He was having trouble breathing and showing signs of an issue with his heart. They told me they could see him first thing and it would cost slightly more than a regular appointment. I agreed and took him in. Due to covid, I couldn't immediately go in with him; the receptionist kept me updated over the phone, but failed to offer thorough information on what was going on. Eventually, I was able to convince the receptionist to let me go inside, where I found out they'd put him on oxygen and sedated him. The staff at this clinic then proceeded to pressure me into putting him down, whilst simultaneously trying to rush us out the door. The treatment we received during this time was inhumane and cold. As I was leaving, the receptionists at the front desk told me I couldn't take the blanket they'd given me to keep him wrapped in. I had to return to the clinic later that day after burying him to return the blanket. The response from the owner incessantly claimed I was reviewing the wrong clinic, and that I needed to figure out which hospital it was that I received this treatment. I assure you it was the Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital on Wellington Road, that we had previously been taking pets to for over a decade. The owner is either entirely out of touch with how the clinic actually works inside, or is so incompetent and unable to take responsibility for how they run their business. I cannot stress enough how evil the people at this clinic are. For your sake and your pets', PLEASE go anywhere else. PLEASE do not give these people your money. They do not care about you nor your pets. I don't typically write reviews like this but I feel it is so necessary to save others from the experience we were given. I have two young puppies now in great health and we take them to Applecross - the treatment from all of the staff there is incredible. Please consider taking your pets somewhere they'll be truly cared for.

Expérience négative: Posting semi-anonymously to avoid being contacted. Came in for an emergency appointment last year, and was treated in the most inhumane manner by everyone in the building. They did not care for my senior dog. They offered no empathy or kindness as I had to make the decision to say goodbye. After 5-10 minutes, they kept trying to rush us out of the building. Took my best friend, too much money, and kicked us out. I don't even know how sick he truly was; they were in too much of a hurry to take his life and move on to the next. On my way out the door, the front staff had the audacity to say I couldn't take the blanket they gave me to hold him in. As if I was going to unwrap his body to leave the blanket. Absolutely disgusting service. Would never bring another animal here. Edit: The response from the owner holds more weight than my own review, I think. Their lack of humanity and lack of ability to take credit is exactly why I chose not to contact them directly, and instead warn others of the treatment we received. If the owner is truly this out of touch and believes truly that we have the wrong clinic (we don't), they need to get in contact with their staff and do a complete rehaul of how their operations run. Nothing in my review is untruthful or inaccurate.

Expérience fantastique: I highly recommend Nanaimo Veterinary Hospital. We are new to them and they have given my dog excellent care and always answer all my questions. I love their reminder texts for vaccines and flea medications. From the front desk to the vets themselves, I think this is a fantastic team!

Expérience négative: Disappointment: I was asking for a price range for OFA x-rays. I was told that no quote over phone, and I have to bring the dog (drive 200km and pay for visit) for quote. After that I will be able to book x-rays... So, I called Mahalo vet hospital and get quote over phone and book appointment.

Expérience fantastique: This is, without a doubt, the best Veterinary clinic in Nanaimo. My husband and I brought my elderly (16 years old) cat in after taking over her care and an extremely negative experience at another clinic left me very nervous about bringing her in. Everyone in the clinic is obviously very experienced with dealing with anxious pets and anxious pet owners! Dr. Alex was incredible - detailed, compassionate and thorough, being clear about what she thought was going on with our kitty, while offering a flexible approach to treatment and care. Let's be honest - animals can be expensive. It's nerve-wracking enough to know that something is wrong with our fuzzy friends, let alone the surprise of discovering the expense of treating them sometimes. We have been fortunate enough to be able to follow through with all Dr. Alex's recommendations, but I'd like to highlight that there is not a single instance where we have felt shamed or pressured into doing anything. Dr. Alex shares her best recommendations and has always offered to be flexible, in order to ensure our cat's quality of life is the best it can be, regardless of circumstance. I will always appreciate that about her manner. Everyone in this clinic prioritizes the care of all that visit and offers unbeatable environment of compassion, knowledge and expertise.
